I doubt anyone will read this... But can't hurt to post it anyway. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not hating on anyone, I just wanted to vent out my peeve.

Anyway, the use of Korean among non-Koreans. I've been here in aff.com for a while and I noticed that in Korean fanfics, people have the tendency to use hangul in their stories - which is completely fine. That's totally up to you.

But what really irks me is when it's used improperly. I'm sorry for being such an uptight Asian here... I truly am sorry. But seriously! Does it hurt to research about each meanings before using them so freely?

I'm NOT saying EVERYONE does this. It's only a some people here and there. Now personally, I don't like to use Korean in my stories unless it's the title even though I'm a native Korean myself. I just don't like to. My whole fic would be in English yet using hangul out of nowhere seems unneccessary to me. But again, that's only the matter of personal prefrence; it's totally up to you people.

I know that no one is perfect in understand the use of Korean slangs and phrases but I decided to make this post to clear it up.

Here are some of the most frequently used phrases

Omo/Omona - a very popular expression to show shock or surprise. (Ex: Omo, are you serious?) This is very easy to use. Everyone understands how to use it in the right situations and they know what it means. But they tend to over use it like "OMO OMO OMO THIS IS SO HARD!" That's fine but using that phrase to say in situations like distress or frustration, that's beyond unnecessary. "Omo" share a similar meaning to "ohmygosh" or "ohmy!" but that doesn't mean it fits to wherever you want it. It shouldn't be used as a word but rather as a "sound" almost like an onomatopoeia.

Aniyo/aniya/ani/ - meaning "No" or that's how most people seem to THINK it means. The Korean language does NOT have a general "no" meaning you cannot use any of these phrases (anyio/aniya/ani) to wherever you want. Each has a different way of saying no.

Aniyo: This is probably the most general 'no' in Korean and can pretty much be used anywhere. It's a FORMAL AND POLITE way of saying no; you don't say it to people your age. Example ways to use this type of 'no' -

Mother: Have you eaten yet?

You: Anyio.

Elder: Are you okay?

You: Aniyo.

Ani: Same thing as 'aniyo' but it's not formal and used casually.

Aniya: This is a type of no to say "this is not it" or "it's not" Ex:

Friend: I think you're jealous of that girl!

You: Aniya!

Classmate: Wasn't the homework chapter 17?

You: Aniya, it was chapter 18.

Mwoh? - "what?" For some reason people have been spelling it "bwoh" I don't know where they got it from or if I'm just misunderstanding but it's not bwoh... it's mwoh. This word is casual and shouldn't be used towards a respected elder. Depending on the tone you use to this phrase, it can appear extremely impolite. Example:

Friend: I heard Michael Jackson died last night...

You: Mwoh?!

Aish - Kind of like "dang it" "dang" "ah darn" or any sound of annoyance and agitation. Again, this isn''t a real word but it's a sound expression.

Other words that non-Koreans use and sometimes mixes up the meaning of it

Aegyo - Trying to look cute, amiability.

Trot - A very old form of Korean pop music. It started around World War II.

Daebak - "Big hit" "amazing" "This is the !" Can be either positive or negative. Example is when you're at school and the teacher is making you do something really hard or in gym class, you have to constantly run no matter how tired you are; you'd say "Wow, this is daebak." Another example "This restaurant is daebak! The food is really good!"
