[Haeyeon, Nam] [August 28, 1993] [20] [neptune]

the face behind the mask

USERNAME: archrenegade
NICKNAME: Arch
BIAS: top
FAVORITE GROUP: big bang

back to basics

name: nam haeyeon

NICKNAME: appa/oppa - group members because he has a very brotherly aura around him
Ahjusshi - Family members because he always seems to take his time with everything, practically everything. even peeing for that matter, he takes usually more than 10 minutes doing... something in the bathroom.

date of birth | age: August 28, 1993 | 20

birthplace | hometown: Incheon, South Korea | Seoul, South Korea

OG faceclaim: Hwang Jinuk

Backup faceclaim: Lee taehwan

height | weight: 179 cm | 63 kg

Physique: Considering that he is more or less a professional athlete before he became a trainee, haeyeon's body is more or less devoid of fat where the ordinary person would be freaking out about wanting to diet. he is packed full of muscle from head to toe as a swimmer and if you ask him to flex, you will see muscle literally rippling under his (usually) tanned skin because he's a swimmer (entire body is involved with swimming). his guns are something to die for. he's quite proud of his body actually since he has such a sizable chest and prominent six-packs, but doesn't show it off unless asked to do so. lately though, he has gotten a bit paler since he does not swim outside as much any more and more or less keeps inside. his hair is considerably a bit wilder than how he usually keeps it, a clean and short haircut that doesn't require much effort to take care of since long hair is definitely not what anyone wants to deal with under a swimming cap.

style: To say that haeyeon dresses like other guys is an understatement; he dresses better than most guys. With a wardrobe that is always guaranteed to bring a more or less classic and fashionable aura with him, most of what he wears can be labeled smart casual clothes - or as people like to , the "ahjusshi" style of clothes that fits his personality so well. He might indulge in wearing some sleeveless shirts and shorts once in a while (usually when at home or sleeping), but whenever he's out in public to impress, it's a definite that he's going to be wearing blazers, scarves, straight jeans and loafers. With friends though, he might just "loosen up" and go in more casual and normal guy clothes.

♛ wish you could see me for who I am

personality traits: gentleman, pushover, serene, apologetic, gullible

persona: there is always that model of the perfect husband and gentleman- gentle, courteous, caring; or that certain prince charming that everyone has in mind. Haeyeon is that guy, well... he was conditioned from a young age to be that guy. you want somebody to be the one to listen to all of your problems and cuddle with you afterwards? that would be haeyeon. you want the perfect in his formal tuxedo and business-like hair? that would be haeyeon too. he is what every parent wants for their innocent little girl, a strong gentleman to protect her.
which is also exactly what he is for his dongsaengs and even his hyungs when they're either in public or in talk shows. when one of them stutters or messes up, haeyeon will take it upon himself to go ahead and divert attention to him instead so that said member can have time to adjust or put himself back in position. he is the lovable and quiet brother that you probably never had, that certain person that you can always come to cry on because he won't attract attention to himself if unneeded.
instead, haeyeon acts more like the pillar that supports everyone else as he tries to have them to be in the lime light while he gives small encouraging comments behind. however, he usually does attract a good deal of attention to himself, especially since he is so good looking and when he starts dancing... it's hard not to look at the clean cut and very smooth style of breakdancing and normal dancing that he has.

private lives: now that you know he is more or less the perfect image of a gentleman in his neatly organized and perfectly balanced suit and tie on stage, it's easy for him to be like that because of his true personality: he is the good boy. the one who always tries his hardest, the one who laughs along with his friends when he's made fun of (because he doesn't really know better actually) and the one who is always the first to come over and hug somebody when they're down? why? well, you'll just have to find out that conditioning does work on people as much as it works on animals too.
Because he is such a nice person, it's evident that Haeyeon is a push over. Probably one of the biggest pushovers ever, the word "sorry" seems to be oozing out from his pores. everything he says is apologetic, everything he even does is apologetic. he's the superhero of sorrys (yes, sorry sorry is his theme song, don't laugh). on any given random moment, he is either trying to quietly do something (in his old and methodically slow way of doing things) or apologizing to something or somebody. he can't help it, the word sorry seems to be in every sentence he says. even if he bumped into a wall, he'll automatically apologize to it. if someone even raises his voice at him, he'll bow his head and murmur out a quiet sorry.
He knows from experience that he's been chided, brushed off, even ignored before for being such a pushover, but if someone gets offended because he didn't say he was sorry, it causes a huge scene, something he'd rather not be in the middle of. So that's why he finds it to be the safest just to apologize because you can't really get offended when he apologizes. How can you? Especially when he's so kind and apologetic all the time...
Can you say pacifist? there's nothing more that haeyeon hates more than fighting, yelling or even angry motions. only if the dorm was like that all the time, especially at night when everyone is in their rooms and he can finally relax back and enjoy some silence. yes, he would be perfect if he was in the joseon age or something. but no, here he is, stuck in the midst of some very violent and loud members that he usually doesn't know how to handle. oh, he tries. he tries to appeal to sangjeon and apologize to him for the fact that they're living in his condo, or tries to talk to jinsung in his broken engrish to comfort him. taechul, he just tries to get the leader from not molesting everyone else. key word: try. he tries, tries and tries, but will he try again? oh yeah, even though he'll never succeed. because he's just a total pushover like that and just gives in to whatever any of the other members want. "Hyung, buy me candy!" "Okay, what type?" It's a wonder why they don't seem to have pity on the fact that Haeyeon usually gets the blunt force of a lot of Youngwoo's punishments for getting the other members their candies or whatever unhealthy snacks that they want.
it's a bit sad to say that Haeyeon is pretty gullible to almost anything that the others throw at him. no, not innocent, gullible. not naive, just a bit oblivious and dense when it comes to verbal matters. oh, he's good at emotional matters such as comforting and spoiling the other members to make them happy, but when it comes to people making fun of him or any more complex emotions than being happy, sad or angry, Haeyeon is more or less at a loss.
Sarcasm flies over his head like alien space ships (he doesn't believe in aliens anyways) and particually makes him feel like an idiot, so if you even tell a half-truth or white lie, he'll believe you without a doubt in his trusting mind. Don't let him find out you tricked though, because he'll just cry on the inside like a man and doubt his intellect. The guy just can't seem to get a good hold on interacting with people "cleverly" and "wittily", always more happier to be in the background and listening instead. Hopefully he'll be able to find someone who can help him somehow? or maybe he's too stuck in the ground with how sad he really is about dealing with other people...

likes:
his dog, mayumi | a cute little devil of a pomeranian. it will not let anyone, i repeat, anyone touch it besides haeyeon unless you want your fingers bitten off. but with haeyeon, they're the perfect image of cuteness that you will get a cavity. guaranteed.
late nights | which is probably the only time that the dorm is (usually) ever quiet is at night, haeyeon's favorite time to just settle down with a book and read for a bit.
classical music | like the ahjusshi he is, he quite likes the ballads that they do more than the more than the upbeat and hiphop songs that they have to do
meat | oh yeah, he's a carnivore. don't ever take him to a barbeque all you can eat because Haeyeon will just grind down meat faster than a wolf can.

Swimming | He's like a fish in the water when he still swam, you probably won't even able to see him when he swims because he's going so fast - oh, he still likes swimming... he just doesn't want to swim for a while now. you might see him just sit at the edge of the pool, but he won't swim, not yet.

disLIKES:
mornings | late nights staying up reading books = not going to wake up early when he can. but hey, even though he hates it, he can't exactly protest...
noises | why is the dorm always so damn loud? because everyone but him seems to like yelling and giggling excessively.
eating | okay, let me clarify - haeyeon eats. he has to. but what i mean is that he doesn't like to watch people eat or have people watch him eat because... it is pretty disgusting watching somebody eat, okay.
anger | why do people always seem to be angry at him whenever he's apologizing? it's just a vicious cycle of him apologizing and them getting angry and it starts all over again..
PRACTICING VOCALS | IT'S NOT THAT HIS VOICE ISN'T BAD, HE JUST DOESN'T LIKE TO SING. TOO SHY ACTUALLY, HE DOESN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE SINGING TOO MUCH YET, BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE LOVES HIS "-DRIPPING" VOICE.

hobbies:
collecting coins | it was just something that started when he was young since money was scarce then and change was always welcome. now, whenever there's change, he'll just ask for it from the other members and put it in his money jar. ask for some change and he'll be happy to give some.
taking care of his dog | seriously, that dog is high maintenance. so if you can't find him somewhere, he'll probably be either brushing or bathing his dog
reading | very slowly and arduously. he really, really, really wants to read some english novels so it's more like him trying to pick out what the sentence is even saying most of the time.
breakdancing | open space, no one around that he could hit = haeyeon dancing a bit. he feels like lately, his dancing skills have gotten a bit rusty, so he takes any time he can to brush up a bit on them.
Naps | He's tired, who wouldn't when you spend a few hours dancing and then staying up reading books? But naps are precious and rare things like diamonds right now as a trainee...

habits:
stuttering when nervous | it's something that he has always tried to stop considering that he has to do speeches and whatnots as an athlete, but it just naturally pops up whenever he's getting fidgety.
saying "sorry" | to everyone and everything, literally. he'll even say sorry to the ground if he trips and falls.
making small motions (shifting from foot to foot, twitching his fingers, blinking excessively) | hopefully his fans and the public doesn't notice it (no, they do), but haeyeon is pretty sure he doesn't have adhd. he just likes to move around a lot since he has quite a bit of pent up energy inside of him.
sleeping like a pole | back against the bed, hands folded on top of his chest and head on the pillow. yeah, like how dead people are arranged in coffins, most of the other members probably have to check during the morning if haeyeon is even alive or not because he does not move when he's asleep. at all.
folding his hands together and having good posture | A habit of a gentleman, it's something that he's been conditioned by his grandmother to do as a children and never really dropped off since then. It looks quite polite though, and he's been praised many times for having the best posture with such a straight back.

trivia:
social media | @haewaves - his twitter (why is not official yet?), nam haeyeon - kakaotalk (and no, he does not check on it any more because most of the time, he seriously gets disturbed and has nightmares by the creepy ims left to him - opppaaa, i have a lady boneerrr right nowwwwww~ <3)
always smiles in his sleep (with a bit of drool usually somehow at the edge of his lips)| as mentioned, he sleeps like a dead person. and even smiles, even more creepier. but dead people don't drool, so look for that tale-tell white dried mark and you'll be ensured that he's alive
anger | so by now, you should know that he's a total rug. but what about when he gets angry? here, i'll just leave this gif for you. just don't get him angry...
favorites | flowers (shut it, he is manly enough to like birds of paradises the most), the color teal green, summer as his favorite season, chopin as his favorite composer
fears | bees, squids, spiders, breaking more bones, needles (which is why when he got his tattoos as a swimmer, he asked them to numb him), guns, falling things

background: things were hard for the nam family from the beginning. And yes, this is going to be an angsty story, so shh and let me just get this over with. living in a two bedroom apartment with 4 people is pretty crowded enough, but put that apartment in the middle of a ty building and it can't get much worse for a korean family. so with both parents working full time and all day, haeyeon was left with his grandmother - a woman who does not belong in the 21th century. why? because she still thinks that women should be at home cooking (she nearly disowned her song for letting his wife work, but then realized that they probably be on the streets if she didn't work either) and men should just provide for the family. Which was why when she had to baby sit her grandson, her one and only precious golden nugget, she decided to raise him in the absolutely best way - well, her absolute best way.
so that meant that haeyeon grew up in a relatively harsh and structured childhood - full of rules, manners, things he must do. the most important rule that was so successfully burned into his head: always listen to your elders and always be humble. maybe too well even, because as you can tell now, haeyeon obviously took that too much. but some of the fault still has to come back to his grandmother, especially with how she punished him if he did not do what she exactly wanted. just a corner tucked in carelessly? a harsh whip across the hand with a bamboo stick (if you've never been hit with one, consider yourself lucky). So obviously, as a small child, being conditioned to be like that with so much consequences that no one would ever want, he had to follow it to the tee. but his grandmother never seemed to be happy with him, there was always more, more! more that he could be perfect about! more that he could do! more that he could fulfill her hunger for perfection of the perfect child!
so when haeyeon came to the age of going to school, it was more than fortunate that he had the gift of physical prowess. no, more importantly - the gift of swimming (at least his grandmother didn't shove him into the pool at the deep end and tell him to swim) that came to him so naturally that he looked like a fish in the water that the movement of the body clicked with him just like that - dancing. so between dancing and swimming, haeyeon quickly rose to the status of one of the most aspiring and hopeful athletes in his school and as he grew up, being quite popular but always retaining that demure and humble attitude everywhere because when he came home... his grandmother still treated him as a child as before.
Her attitude towards him never changed, not even when after he came out of high school and was well on his way to be a professional swimmer, that haeyeon still feared her and sometimes still have nightmares of when she beat him in anger because of what he did wrong. so with such a bright future and his hard work of winning races, getting to district swimming races... then regional ones... and then for the country, the whole world seemed to be right in front of him. his family was proud of him, he was even proud of himself - haeyeon was bringing in the dough like no one else with all the sponsors that he was getting for his nearly perfect streak of victories in the butterfly and freestyle swimming races. he was "the swimming prodigy", the one who won the korean people's hearts with his gentle and humble manners in interviews and his swiftness and speed in the water.
but all of that ended one day, a sudden halt that threw him off the joyride of his life. one insignificant night, one that he wouldn't have remembered if it hadn't happened just before the finals for the Olympics. this was it, this was the race that would propel him into the world-wide fame of being an olympic athlete if he managed to win the race but that night was end of it all. haeyeon doesn't really remember much of what happened that night since they told him that he had a concussion afterwards, but what they think happened to him was that he was walking home and crossing the street when there was a hit and run accident. haeyeon was hit obviously, broke his leg, multiple road rash burns down his left side and when he fell, hit his head so hard that when he woke up again, it was a week later. The sight of his family gathered around him, faces ranging from sadness to anger and then seeing the tv talk about him and how his dreams were now crushed seemed... too surreal. it had to be nightmare, he told himself then, but it was reality. the finals for the olympics was over and here he was, broken leg and crushed dreams. he couldn't wait four more years, it was too late. he lost his chance and just the look of disappointment on his grandmother's face even though it wasn't his fault was enough to crush haeyeon's spirit to swim for a while... he hasn't swam since. the recovery process was... painful for him, mentally, emotionally and physically. no amount of persuasion and harsh words from his family would get him to swim again, not even in time for the next olympics. haeyeon was done with swimming - but now another door of opportunities was open for him to enter...

♛ thousand places, a thousand faces

family:

father - Nam Kimoon | 52 | electrician | hardworking, strict, serious | Well, haeyeon tried to take after his father for the most part, but tried to be better than him. usually, he talks about his father in a respectful and revering way when he can.

mother - nam baeli | 49 | part time cashier/part time waitress | hasty, forgetful, hopeful | Haeyeon loves his mother very much, but considering that she's just as equally busy as his father, there's not much time to talk to her. Most of the time, he tries to call her once in while to see how she's doing with life.

grandmother - nam yoonji | 71 | stay at home grandmother | unbending, proud, traditional | To make it simple, haeyeon is damn ing scared of his grandmother. she is... terrifying to say at the least to him, and he only feels like a little naughty boy again whenever he sees her. he dares not to say anything bad about her, but the fear is pretty evident whenever she comes up in a conversation.

friends:

Childhood acquaintances - Min youngwoo | 26 | nutritionist/fitness trainer for pandemonium | deceptive, perceptive, always smiling | Considering that they haven't seen each other in... years, it's just more of a shock to meet him again. but that good will that they had as kids seems to carry over to now too...

choi minho | 21 | shinee | charismatic, honest, brotherly | as fellow athletes (they've played soccer a couple times together, even though Haeyeon at soccer like no one else), they seem to go well along with each other. One of them is a completely oblivious yet nice guy, and the other tries to help him out with life in general when he can.

Lee Kyungsoon | 19 | college student | cheerful, polite, shy | Haeyeon's first girlfriend and probably last. It was actually that his grandmother set them up and after a few months of "going out", that was when Haeyeon found out his uality. It was her who convinced him to realize that he liked guys a lot more than girls, and she still tries to encourage him on to admit that to his family...

rivals/enemies:

rival & enemies - BANG jinho | 24 | professional swimmer | suave, confident, arrogant | This is probably the one and only guy that Haeyeon hates more than anyone else. The reasons are pretty evident since they were rivals (the media made sure to say that they were competing head to head for that olympics spot), especially since he's more than sure that jinho sabatoged him from getting into the finals to go to the olympics. but sadly, he doesn't have any hard evidence than that stupid and smug smirk on the guy's face...

♛ a whole new monster

stage name: neptune (previous profession, name means prosperous sea/ocean)

position: Main dancer, visual, sub-vocal

skill twin: Joon  for for vocals, victor kim for dancing

personal skills: breakdancing, introductions and speeches, picking up conversations and making things less awkward

personal fanclub name: mers (mermaids and mermen)

profession: As said in his backstory, Haeyeon is a professional swimmer - almost good enough for the olympics (just a small recap). Because of his athletic fame, he is quite well known in Korea not only for his physical prowess, but also for his looks. many times, he has had to do some athlete magazine shoots, which only increased his fame even more. he has gotten many sponsors during his athletic career and thus, is even more well known.
The reason that he got into the idol section of the entertainment world is because as mentioned in his school life, Haeyeon was in a break dancing group who when college came around, broke up and went their separate ways. However, just as a method of stress relieving when water for him to swim in isn't available, he will dance and usually upload those videos up to youtube in his free time. surprisingly, he got popular from those videos and after a while, was asked to come audition for bossX when the whole swimming "accident" happened and his leg healed after the whole scandal that happened while he was simply down with life... To say, it was a new start for him.

trainee life: First off, athletes have some pretty harsh schedules already so when the whole trainee life came to him... Haeyeon actually handled it pretty well. Even the group mates too, actually. Okay, maybe he was a bit overwhelmed when all of a sudden, he had to share a dorm with 5 other guys, especially when one of them was screaming at everyone else to not touch anything (getting a lot of sorrys from Haeyeon in response) and another one was just trying to him at times, but he tried to be nice, of course. at least they never really blew his cap off, but there were times where he just had to keep smiling and apologizing... it's not polite to rage at those guys he was going to have be with for a while.
but after everything settled down and he was trying to work in with his singing (he's not very confident with his voice as he is with his dancing), that was when haeyeon managed to unwind enough to really appreciate and enjoy (read: spoil) the others with what they always want from him. he is the kind appa of the group, that should be said enough... and one of the only ones who somehow manages to calm the byuntaechul down (probably because he is taken pity on?) from molesting the others along with getting sangjeon to stop screaming at everyone for even sitting on the couch.

♛ the grand finale

questions, comments, concerns: my first character application in a while. i hope you like him since i enjoy reading the story quite a bit. I'll support it even if Haeyeon doesn't get chosen. :]
sorry if things don't make sense, i'm trying to rush and get this in as fast as possible, though i'll definitely change stuff if needed.

scene requests: i'll tell them to you later when i gather my wits again. but i do want the group to get him to swim again.

song suggestions: This is war, smoky girl - MBLAQ, Monster - Big Bang, Mirotic - TVXQ
