Background: Han Joo Yu was born in Gangnam, South Korea and was raised. Her dad was Korean and her mom was Japanese. She has two siblings. They weren't really that close. Her dad wanted to be a singer and her mom always wanted to be an actress. Joo Yu wanted to be an actress like her mother. Her parents divorced when she was just at the age of 5, Making her mother leave her. Her father died from leukemia cancer when she was 12. She was left to live with her older brother. She decided to pursue her dream by auditioning for YG, which she failed to become a trainee. She was later discovered by a SM scouter during a live SM Concert 2010 at the age of 16. She quited her Middle school's hockey team to take care of her appearances. She was a trainee for 3 years.

Joo Yu was always the most out-going, forceful and fierce type of girl. She was strong and straight-forward. She doesn't really get nervous much and is really brave.
