♛ back to basics

NAME: choi sangjeon

NICKNAME:
Secret agent Man: his manager, because he has some really strange things in the top drawer of his dresser.
neatfreak: by his close friends, because he is obsessively hygenic.
sang: his father's really annoying term of endearment that drives him bonkers. seriously his name is sangjeon, not sang or sangsang or any other cute, obnoxious . he's a man, damn it.

DATE OF BIRTH | AGE: 4/20/1994 | 19

BIRTHPLACE | HOMETOWN: gangnam-gu, seoul | gangnam-gu, seoul

OG FACECLAIM: jang hyeon

BACKUP FACECLAIM: jang hyeon

HEIGHT | WEIGHT: 178cm | 53kg

PHYSIQUE:
"your face is your money maker." She told him this, and so he takes care of his face and skin.
"Bad teeth will ruin your career." she cautioned, and so he takes perfect care of his white, straight teeth, brushing them six times a day.
"An ounce of fat will make you hideous." She starved him, and so he starved himself.

he didn't start out obsessed with his features, determined to be perfect in every way. sangjeon wasn't always vain and self-centered. but this thin shouldered, medium height, thin boy has spent years perfecting his features from countless surgeries to correct his slightly broad jaw, monolids, and crooked teeth to the dermatological treatments he gets every few weeks to keep his skin milky white. He takes tremendous pride in his appearance and works very hard to keep it all together. even if the rest of his world was falling apart, you best believe that sangjeon would still make it to his three o'clock hair appointment and his six o'clock manicure.

STYLE:
"an actor must always be at the top- top of his looks, top of his work, top of his fashion."
Sangjeon only knows one thing for sure- he's got style. He's always cutting out clippings from magazines while he gets his hair done or in other free moments of the day, looking for the latest and greatest styles. he's not really a trendsetter, but he's always one of the first to jump into a new style. he's very fashionable, always changing up his looks and his appearance as new things come along. when it was hot to wear dark clothes and have spiky hair, Sangjeon was one of the first to dive into that style. now that colorful, chic clothes and short, boyish hair is in, he's immersed himself in the fashion. however, one thing always remains a constant in his wardrobes- his precious silver watch. yes, it is a girls watch. his mothers watch, to be exact. and yes, it's broken and never moves because it shows the exact moment she hit the pavement after flying. He can't bring himself to take it off, and he can't bring himself to get it fixed.

♛ wish you could see me for who I am

PERSONALITY TRAITS: Persona: charming, friendly | Private life: bossy, unnaffected, prince-complex

PERSONA:
"He's quite the charmer, isn't he?" Noonas and dongsaengs alike find themselves swept off their feet by the gentle, kind smile that sangjeon has mastered over the years. sangjeon's biggest skill in life is his easy flirtation with people he doesn't care for--he finds it incredibly easy to pretend to care deeply for his fans and even easier to make them believe he has feelings for them. although deep down sangjeon knows that it is cruel to trick the young women like that, he also knows that it makes the young women feel special and attractive, which is how he rationalizes the way he charms his fans so fully with his seemingly kind-hearted nature and open smile. he always initiates conversations with his fans and will stop at the airport or other events to greet them, take pictures, and give hugs.

Most of his charm can be attributed to his mother, who has been preening her son to be the perfect "mother's friends son," the kid everyone wishes they could be. sangjeon is a person that really suffers from duality- having one personality on stage and a totally different personality off stage. when there are prying eyes that can dish dirt on him and ruin his pristine reputation, this nation's mother's friend's son is a perfect angel; always knowing exactly what to say to people and always performs well on variety shows. he can somehow pull off being funny and intelligent. every time he appears on a show, sangjeon is guaranteed to come out of it with new fans because he has worked so hard on creating a perfect character for himself- someone he can be that is so much more interesting than himself because he has no confidence in his boring personality that he has at home.

PRIVATE LIVES:
"Aish, this bratty kid." dojung manager hyung, who is basically sangjeon's bestest friend (read: only friend) often affectionately refers to sangjeon as "childish at best, spoiled at worst" due to the strange tendancy of sangjeon to become a bossy little diva when he's at home or surrounded by people he's comfortable with. a commonly heard term around sangjeon is, "Hyung, can you do this?" or "Hyung, make me this." Used to getting what he wants by the force of his charms alone, sangjeon doesn't really realize that he's acting like a total little brat most of the time. he never really stops to consider that he's being annoying, and even if you blatantly tell him he's being a burden he's going to argue with you. not one to pout, this confident young man brushes insults off like dust and doesn't react to anything his hyungs say if it's not to his ego.  he's the type to speak his mind and throw caution to the wind, which can lead a lot of people to having a bad impression of him. he doesn't mean to be rude, honestly. sangjeon isn't usually preoccupied with thinking of other people due to the fact that he's far too busy thinking about himself.

after sangjeon has grown comfortable with the other boys of the dorm, he grows comfortable with trying to intimidate them with aegyo to get his way. Obviously at first he's standoffish, blunt and rude towards the others but as they grow closer and begin sharing experiences with each other, Sangjeon becomes slightly more bearable. he's not cutesy, and he embraces this fact by terrifying the masses with his almost horrendous aegyo, using gross squeaky voices until his target/victim gives in and lets him have a bite of their taffy. anything but a germaphobe, sangjeon loves sharing food with his hyungs and dongsaengs (especially when they pay for the food) and often asks/expects them to share with him. Although not a huge fan of skinship (like, barf.) he naturally tends to initiate it when he wants something from someone.

BACKGROUND:

With a famous actress as a mother and a very rich ceo for a father, Sangjeon was born to have a good life. at least, that's what everyone tells him. but daddy was busy and mommy was unfortunately free from work, left at home to sink deeper and deeper into her own misery. she hadn't been able to land a job since she gave birth to Sangjeon, being told she had lost some of her beauty after getting married and having a child. It was a cruel thing to say to the already fragile woman and despite the tremendous love she felt for her son, she began resenting the world at the same time. the entertainment industry had chewed her up and spat her out, leaving her broken and sad, with no skills aside from acting to speak of. she grew bored, unable to work and instead forced to sit around at home, watching nannies raise her son. sangjeon was three when the nannies were fired and sent away, when nayoung got it in her head that she would create the perfect son and the perfect little actor. she filled his young head with her jaded opinions.

"Your face is your money maker, since you're pretty like me," she would say, his baby-soft, chubby cheeks lovingly. she was a kind mother, and he remembers her as nothing but kind and loving. she never raised her voice, never struck him when he spoke back or copped an attitude. nayoung really was a loving and gentle woman by all accounts. "You're worthless once you get old, so you have to work hard now." she would explain when she persuaded him to work relentlessly, practicing his acting and his eloquence. "Your skin has to be soft and beautiful, your eyes must be double-lidded," she would say when she paid her personal surgeon a few hundred grand to perform operations illegally on the nine year old sangjeon. "Your personality must be shining," she would whisper as she coached him on exactly how to act in front of other people, squeezing his hand encouragingly. with his mother by his side, sangjeon felt like he could do anything, take on any task. he was a happy child, and nothing could convince him otherwise.

and as he got job offer after job offer, his mother began to gradually pick herself back up. it was slow at first, and sangjeon would have never noticed, but she began changing the way she treated him. instead of asking him to practice all day, she encouraged him to go out and make friends and be a normal child. instead of making him get facial treatments and stay indoors, she began to encourage him to go outside and play sports. he didn't know it, but she was realizing that she had been hurting her child as much as she was helping him and decided to give him a normal childhood. she even began auditioning for roles herself, and landed a starring role in a movie. needless to say, nayoung was ecstatic, and sangjeon was happy for her. he was doing exceptionally well in school and his after school sports, making lots of friends, and wasn't working quite as much. his father was coming home more often and setting special time aside for sangjeon, taking him fishing and on camping trips. sangjeon thinks back on this as the happiest time of his life, the time where he had a 100% real family like the ones you see in movies.

but bad things come in threes. sangjeon's father's company suffered a huge hit as a controversy from the board of directors obliterated their public image, causing profits to plummet. his father had to work almost constantly to recover and keep the company afloat, which meant sangjeon was once again basically fatherless. his fathers company had been supporting nayoung's new film, and their sudden plummet in profits caused the project to almost fall apart right then and there, but nayoung agreed to work without pay because she felt so much happiness when she acted, and spent long and hard days working far away from home. sangjeon, upset that he had lost his perfect family and upset that they didn't show up to his championship soccer game, had a severe accident due to his aggresive playing and completely destroyed his ankle, only to be told that he would be unable to play soccer again.

and yet, they recovered still. nayoung's movie was finished, his father's company recovered, and sangjeon discovered a new passion in the weeks he spent bedridden- music. sangjeon's friends from soccer, in an attempt to help him pass the time, brought him tons of mixtapes from underground rappers and the biggest hiphop artists of the day, and sangjeon spent hours every day listening to and absorbing the music. songs that talked about hardship, about working hard, about overcoming odds, about heartbreak- he ate it all up like it was a piece of devils food cake. soon, sangjeon was buying programs that would let him mix his own beats and create his own songs. he wasn't very good at it, of course, but nothing made him happier. he immersed himself in creating music, giving up his acting career in order to pursue his newest passion. nayoung was less than thrilled to hear about this, however. sangjeon, she felt, had a real talent for acting. she implored and begged him to rethink his choices and to continue acting rather than toss away all of his talent and opportunities, which caused a fight between mother and son-- really the first fight they had ever had.

two weeks. sangjeon hadn't spoken to his mother in two weeks. and in two weeks, nayoung found out that her movie was a total flop. in two weeks, nayoung had her heart completely and utterly broken. in two weeks, nayoung had given up on life. her son, whom she had wanted to live vicariously through (no matter how selfish) had thrown acting away, and acting had thrown away nayoung. it was a rainy summer morning when nayoung climbed the thirty flights to the top of their condominium building. it was a rainy summer morning when sangjeon woke up and discovered a suicide note on the coffee table, then dashed full speed upstairs to stop his mother, hug her and tell her that he was sorry and that he loved her. and it was a rainy summer morning when sangjeon flew out of the door just in time to see his mother leap. but it was sunny and hot the day of her funeral, the day sangjeon whispered to his mother that he was sorry, that he'd never make music again, and that he'd be a successful actor like she'd always dreamed. from then on, sangjeon religiously followed everything his mother taught him. he took care of his skin and his looks, dieted obsessively, and worked hard in acting so as not to be a typical child-star story. for the sake of his mother, he grew popular in the acting world.

But his father hated knowing that sangjeon had given up his dreams like that. he hated knowing that sangjeon had such a passion and a talent in music but wasn't pursuing that passion. he couldn't stand to see the transformation his son had went through, blaming himself for the death of his mother. when he discovered a small entertainment company that was about to go under, his father didn't hesitate to purchase the company and begin putting an idol group together for his son, to ensure that sangjeon could pursue his dreams in the way that his son wanted, without the hinderance of a company like sm or yg. but when he told sangjeon his plans and presented sangjeon with his group mates, sangjeon freaked out. he didn't want to be a part of a stupid idol group- he resented the idea of being an idol and dancing like a fool on stage. he had buried those dreams so long ago that he was afriad to pursue them at this point. sangjeon definitely did not want to be an idol.

STAGE NAME: J

POSITION: main rapper, sub dancer

SKILL TWIN: mino

PERSONAL SKILLS: imitating cartoon characters, can compose his own music, can act well (that's a given)

PERSONAL FANCLUB NAME: j-Bee's (like babies, but j-bees.)

PROFESSION: Actor. Sangjeon has been acting for years, and got into it because of his mother, who wanted him to act as she had once acted. after her death, sangjeon felt so horrible for the fight he had with her that he began questioning if his choice to give up acting had been part of the reason she committed suicide. young and broken up, sangjeongave up his dream of pursuing a career in music, burying his desires deep under several layers of self-hate and pain. he had already acted as a child for years, but hadn't acted in a real role in quite a few years. he had to audition a lot to land a role, but eventually began getting small roles in dramas. After acting in several small roles, he began landing bigger ones and then even scored a leading role. his charming personality and a few lucky opportunities to be on television variety shows, sangjeon managed to earn a lot of attention and a lot of fans, which landed him even more roles.

TRAINEE LIFE: it . really bad. first, five guys showed up to sangjeon's condo saying that this was supposedly their dorm, and that they were living there now. after that, when sangjeon called his dad to figure out what the frick was going on, he was informed that starting the very next day, he would be beginning a rigorous training schedule of 4 hours dance practice, 4 hours in studio, 4 hours in vocal training, and 4 hours dedicated to all other important things. yes, sixteen hours of his day for the next six months were completely taken up by training to be an idol. and what was worse? he didn't really have a choice of simply saying no. his father had sunk all of his funds into this project, and Sungjeon was set up to be the main composer and an important producer as well as being the main rapper, and not to mention the guilt trip dojung put him through about, "These guys risked their careers to do this. you can't let them all fail miserably and potentially lose their popularity and never get another job again."
