My Korean Adventures

So I live in a city that hosts a massive arts festival every August. ( I won't name the city but if your curious you can figure it out) Its world famous and its incredible. Full of culture and comedy and theatre and art and just general amazingness.

Anyways I was walking down one of the main streets in the centre of the city soaking up the atmosphere and the street theatre and stalls when my friend said to me "Hey look people in Kimonos!" (He knows my obsession with Asian culture in general)

So I glance over and my heart stops. I squeal "Those arent Kimonos those are Hanboks!!" and proceed to vault over about 20 people in my excitement trying to get closer! When I saw the sign they were holding was in Hangul and confirmed they were actually Korean, I lost it! Its pathetic I know but whilst we have a large Chinese and Japanese community where I live there are hardly any Koreans. I have never actually met a Korean person in real life and there was like 15 of them right in front of me.

So after flailing and panicking a bit I decided to see what they were doing. They were giving out fliers promoting for their show! So I was all brave and went up and asked for one. When he gave me it I bowed to him and said "Kamsahamnida." I dont know where I got the balls to do this lol. He was all impressed! He smiled and said it back. then asked me if I spoke Korean in English. I managed to say "no I only speak a little" in Korean whilst turning red as a tomato. He said my accent was cute. (I spazzed about this for hours afterward)

So I am going to see a real Korean play this week! (it was meant to be last week but I had to exchange my tickets cos something came up)  I am sooooooo excited. And then on the way home I went into my local Asian supermarket to get some veggies and noticed they have started selling Soju!! I got so excited I could hardly breathe! (the wee Chinese grandma who works there thinks I'm a lunatic1)  It was one of the Korean things I've been dying to try for years but not been able to find! So I had a total Korean adventure! I am going to buy the soju for the day I go to see the play so I can drink it afterwards.

So in case anyone cares the play is called A Romance and this is what the theatre guide says:

New piece from acclaimed physical theatre company. In a male-centred era, women met in secret to share stories and exchange ideas. Combining traditional music and beautiful costumes Modl Theatre weave together a cultural tale of a noble family who're preparing for their daughter's wedding. Sewing in a secret room, whilst the bride reads aloud to the illiterate servants to thank them for their work. They continue late into the night, eventually sharing their own personal love stories. 'Sensual storytelling, powerful acting!’ (Today's Theater, Seoul). www.modli.com

I actually cannot wait! Maybe one of the actors will be a Jinki lookalike and he will fall in love with me and we can run away to Seoul together......or maybe it will just be a really cool play. Either way I am happier than I can explain lol Figured some of you guys would understand. ^__^
