Shut Up Flower Boy Band Review
and my favourite is still Lee Hyunsoo. lol.
So I finished Shut Up Flower Boy Band yesterday, and I have to say, although I really liked the ending - it was well thought-out and reasonable (plus they performed Jaywalking in its full glory) - I have to say it wasn't as good as King 2 Hearts, my favourite drama so far, was. You see, I like stories and dramas which have a red thread throughout the plot, and I dislike it when it gets lost, as it was the case in Dream High 2. King2Hearts had the red thread throughout the story - Jae Ha and Hang Ah's engagement and the WOC as ways to unite Korea back again - and even though it was sometimes too much (to the point where the hardships were too shallow and were made just for the sake of ratings, you know?) it ended wonderfully and never lost its red thread. SUFBB though sometimes lost the thread - the struggles of a band which wants to be famous - and only focused on the (stupid) relationship of Su Ah, Jihyuk, and Seung Hoon as well as the triangle aka Jihyuk-Wookyung-Do Il (that makes a love hexagon!? edit: it's a pentagon.) . It wasn't as stupid as in Dream High 2, but still, sometimes it got on my nerves. A lot. I was almost thinking that it would end like Dream High 2 - extremely shallow and no pairings got real except Jr / headmaster's daughter - but it didn't. Like I said, it ended quite good and - oh, surprise, Jihyuk has actually a brain - reasonable.
So, it was, overall, a good drama. And Myungsoo acted quite good - let's add the fact that he also had Second Invasion to perform / train, and my respect for this idiot (wait a minute, I respect him!? Wow, something new) rocketed. After all, he is also a human, and instead of blaming Myungsoo / Woollim and pitying Sungyeol that he doesn't have any roles given, let's think it a bit differently: Sungyeol acted in a 120 episodes drama, right where he had to perform Be Mine. 120 episodes. That is the half of episodes Myungsoo ever played. The visual, on the other side, had to act in Japan while Be Mine promotions, and again, Second Invasion was around the corner when he was Lee Hyunsoo (that's why he isn't in many episodes, especially from 1-8, and sometimes simply misses with the excuse of "he has to take care of Dasom"). And besides, being a Myungsoo / Sungyeol stan I am, I'm happy that Sungyeol had his cameo in Adolescence Medley / his variety in Laws of the Jungle 2 (still have to watch tbh), and Myungsoo had his cameo in this drama I don't know the name of. At least, they're equal in this point.
Anyways, (god my obnoxious comments! I'm so sorry!) I'd like to deconstruct the characters, since the plot rating is up to you. For those who haven't watched it yet, watch it! And don't read the spoilers!
Joo Byunghee: Definitely my favourite character in the first two episodes. He had this Jack Sparrow-ish side, wonderfully eccentric and funny. My jaw opened when he died (WHAT KIND OF DEATH IS THIS, DRAMA!??) and I mumbled to myself: "fave character dies in first two episodes. Great." But the continious mentions of Byunghee made him more... alive? Haha.
Kwon Jihyuk: I had a love-hate relationship with this guy. Seriously. Most of the time, he reminded me of Jin Yoo Jin (that's Jinwoon's role in Dream High 2), with his sarcastic and idgaf-side when he does care about others. Sometimes, he was utterly badass, but on other times, he was just pathetic, espeically with Su Ah around. He's like a better and refined version of Yoo Jin and I mean it. At least, he pathed the reasonable ending. Really.
Jang Do Il: Prince. Literally. This character was precious to no end. He became my second favourite pretty quickly. Even the way he treated and loved Wookyung was utterly beautiful (and I was so happy that they ended up together. YOU DON'T DESERVE JIHYUK WOOKYUNG!) and he had this wonderfully calm and sensible side that made him so wonderful. And he became such a geek at the end - and hell, I wish there were more handsome geeks like him.
Kim Hajin: Good character, actually. He was fun, and he often reminded me of other K-Pop idols. With his inital curly hair, he looked like Chanyeol, and with the black hair, he looked like Jinwoon. His fanboyish side was cool, but when he didn't listen to Hyunsoo's reasonable excuse for why he had to sing with Yerim, I lost some kind of love to him. Totally stupid. But then he cared so much about Hyunsoo near the end again, that was good. Heh.
Lee Hyunsoo: Favourite character. Absolutely my favourite. And that's not because it's Myungsoo. Hyunsoo was a wonderful character, extremely cold and rough and fierce, but still caring and kind hearted and deep and full of pride. Wonderful. Sometimes, there was Myungsoo coming out, but I thought that was fine. The end, though... Where he was extremely jealous that Yerim flirted with Seung Hoon, I found it a bit childish and immature and not Hyunsoo-ish but rather clingyloser!soo. However, his interactions with Yerim were cool, too, and the way he showed no interest in her because Hajin loved her was just precious. Absolutely my favourite, from start to finish.
Seo Kyung Jong: I disliked him at the first two episodes, he was simply annoying. But other than that, this poor boy hadn't much character depth. He was okay, he had his struggles, he is a Busan human (with no Satoori, like Hoya. Haha.) but other than that, he hadn't much in my eyes. Still a sweetheart. He was like the mother of the group. And his interactions with Hajin was so cool! They were real bros!
And, not to forget, Shil Ba was precious to no end. to no ing end.
And Seung Hoon is a real jerk. Period.
Onto the ladies!
Im Su Ah: She was like Kang Sora in Dream High 2, only much, much smarter. That was it. Sometimes, she was utterly stupid, and I was often ughgirlgoawayyou'retoomuch, but she was really nice. She was smart, but her moments with Seung Hoon were sometimes a bit too... ew. At least she was the one who broke up with Jihyuk. Good girl.
Kim Yerim: I disliked her at first, but then I realized that this girl was presh to no end. A wonderful, wonderful woman, with a heart that Hyunsoo doesn't have, and a wonderful woman. Enough said.
Park Wookyung: She reminded me of myself. A lot. She's loud, and clingy, and weird, like me. By the way, I should post the deconstruction of myself again, now that I have my friends who are surely eager to know me a bit better (plus my real name. I know I troll some with Elly, still, it isn't my real name. Just my internet persona.)
So, that was it! And of course, being an Inspirit I've been since December 2012, #Destiny3rdwin! And they deserve it a lot! (PLUS YEOLEE INTERACTIONS AISH SHIP SHIP SHIP.)
