Kyung Joo is a patient, quiet girl. Ever since she was little, Kyung Joo had been taught by her mother how to walk, talk and act like a proper lady should. She has a good reputation and is the pride and dignity of her family. Everywhere she goes, she has this aura of elegance and gentleness around her. She is burdened by expectations and despite her reluctance to be married off to a person she doesn't love, she is one of the number one candidates to be the next Queen. She is always careful of her actions and how she looks, if anything happens to her reputations, her mother will be furious and she'll feel as if she's let them down. She withstands all the hardships and bears with the burdens because she wants to make her family proud of her, that's all she wants, and she wants a purpose for her life, and she's accepted that her purpose is trying to get the prince's hand.
No matter where so goes or what she does, she must be kind, gentle and graceful, which she succeeds in most of the time. Her smiles are forced and a mask to cover up for her usually expressionless face. She can only smile, even when she doesn't want to; no frowns or tears are to be visible on her face.
The only time when she doesn't have to be perfect is when she's in her room or alone in the garden in her house. There she can be her expressionless, pessimistic self. When she's by herself, she doesn't like to be disturbed and gets slightly annoyed when she is, but she doesn't yell or express her annoyance in any way because she was brought up that way. If someone upsets her or annoys her, she doesn't say anything because you shouldn't let people know your weaknesses. She's naturally quiet and has a plain personality, no special traits like her wit and humor she is imagined to have. The only thing she can call her own personality trait is her knowledge and intellect. She has a thirst for knowledge and loves the feeling she gets when she's learning more things normal people wouldn't know. Due to her knowledge she is quite witty, but not very funny, and is quite good with comebacks. She can hold in her emotions well and rarely cries or yells, but that results in her having so much pent up anger and sadness that she doesn't know what to do with them. Other than that she would describe herself with a plain personality, but that's ok; you can't paint a perfect picture unless you have a plain canvas.

Kyung Joo have given into her inevitable fate. She knows no matter what she does, she can't do anything against her stubborn mother and no longer tried to go against her wishes. She accepted that it's her destiny to marry a prince, it's her duty...but she can't help but feel like a pawn in her mother's game.There are times when she wants to run away from it all, but it's her responsibility as the only child of her aristocratic family. She has so many thought whirling through her head when she's by herself she wonders how she can deal with all the expectations she has to fulfill. Growing up there was nothing but expectations piled upon her by her mother, her father however was barely at home to even notice. She was an only child and the pride of her family, thanks to her mother's teaching on how to be the perfect princess. As she got older, she became more beautiful and people were nervous by her good values and beauty. Of course some of those teaching sunk it, she did become a kind and generous girl and she is patient, but some were just plain fake. Like her 'humor' she really can't tell her own jokes, but her mother would teach her what to say in front of other people; including jokes. She was like a clay model being sculpted to perfection by her sculptor. But the amount of love she receives is like a payment for all the hardships she faces, she becomes young girls' role model and the perfect daughter for other mothers as well as making her own family proud and establishing a good reputation for her family; which is what makes it worthwhile. But...no matter how hard she tries, even she knows she can't be the perfect girl everyone thinks she is. It's like regular girls trying to be like a barbie doll, but it's even worse because she basically is the barbie doll...and she's not what everyone thinks she is.

Since she was born, her mother raised her to become perfect and sometimes she made her act like something she wasn't. Kyung Joo became a p.i.t because her mother suggested it, but she only agreed because she thinks it's her responsibility to become the prince's bride; it's what she's been raised to do since she was baby. Her fate had been decided since the moment she was born. She wants to make her family proud and have a purpose for her life; even if it means marrying someone she doesn't love.

Grandmother - Liu Yuhan - 87 - retired - She and Kyung Joo are extremely close, and ever since she was younger her grandmother would tell her stories of when she was younger and teach her Chinese. Whenever they were together Kyung Joo would call her nainai and only talk to her in Chinese, but Kyung Joo's been so busy lately she hasn't been able to talk to her a lot. Her grandmother gave her a duck necklace for her 12th birthday, which she still doesn't take off to this day.

Kyung Joo was in princess school and in the garden. She was just admiring the flowers and thinking to herself about how stupid she feels just listening to her mother all the time, but knows it's too late and her fate is practically sealed, the only thing left is to be selected. She was thinking and saw the palace cat next to her and started to it and talking to it about her troubles quietly. Someone behind her hears and he's all "really?" She gets up slowly and turns around, like she really doesn't care, and sees Sandeul who's visiting the prince because they're good friends. He recognizes her because she's his younger sister's role model. She doesn't care who he is since he's already heard everything and just looks at him expressionless. He talks to her about the prince and is surprised because she's so uninterested even though the prince's mother likes her and she's one of the top candidates for the prince.
"It's not like I have a choice, I'll have to accept it as my unavoidable destiny," she said before walking away. And Sandeul gets interested in her.

They frequently bump into each other in the palace. She's either with someone and pretending to be perfect or by herself in the garden and having an unidentifiable look on her face. Sandeul starts to talk to her and she's cautious around him, but he give her his eye-smile and she feels a little more comfortable. He is a funny person who love to have fun and laugh, and is interested because she has an otherwise expressionless look on her face most of the time. They see each other a lot and sometimes Sandeul waits for her in the garden because he knows she goes everyday after dinner. Slowly, they get closer and she opens up to him and tells him about how she had been raised to be the perfect girl and he understands because he was raised to take over his father's company too. But after getting closer, they start falling for each other and he teaches her that no one should decide her fate but herself and she should just be herself because someone's bound to love her for herself.
