Korean Stereotypes on Foreigners

So guys, to start off, are anyone subscribe to Eat Your Kimchi on YouTube? If you aren’t then I strongly suggest you do because they make really entertaining; yet factual, videos on there. Haha! Anyway, those who are subscribed to their channel, all of you would remember the video they posted a few weeks back called Korean Stereotypes on Foreigners.

I watched this video right after I saw it come out and I was really enlightened with what I found out. I mean, I love Korea. I love their culture, their people, their food, their music, and I’ve always been told by many people that they are actually a lot more disrespectful than what they show on T.V. I was sceptical with this, since the whole levels of respect really spoke to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I found out that Koreans are not respectful after watching this video, but now I understand why people think this way.

You see, Korea is a little ‘backwards’ – for the lack of a better word. Sorry for the crudeness of it, and if it offends anyone, it was not intentional. But, yeah, they live with more traditional beliefs and live in a more conservative manner; especially compared with the Hedonistic tendencies of the Western culture – again, not intended to offend. But it really bugs me when people say that their culture is ‘disrespectful’ or, as my Filipino family says, ‘Masamang ugali’.

All countries have the right to act the way they think is right, as long as it doesn’t hurt other people intentionally in the process. Now, I know people would argue on things like ‘Well, there are countries that bomb and terrorise other countries with the illusion that it is right. So, what, you agree with these people?’ That’s a completely different matter. These people use violence against mankind to force their opinions unto them, there is no violent forcing going on here; don’t even dare mention North Korea or so help me a 10,000,000 page essay is going to come out somewhere the sun don’t shine, and they aren’t forcing anything towards anyone.

Now, the real point of this blog post is to tell everyone that I’ll be creating a ‘Stereotype of …’ blog series where I will be speaking about stereotypes of all different cultures and such. This is such a big issue for me since I really have passionate views on stereotypes and prejudices – being an ethnic minority in a country really does this to you. And I know a lot of people share the same views as I do. This doesn’t mean that I don’t have stereotypical views and create prejudices against people, no. I am human and things like this are difficult to prevent; especially if you’re surrounded with it every day. However, I try my best to keep an open mind and just push away the negative thoughts to create a clean slate.

And, with these upcoming blog posts, I hope to help other people do the same.

Please, feel free to comment whenever you want, all opinions are welcome. I will answer any questions you may have to the best of my abilities, but you would need to bear with me since my answers would consist of questions I ask my friends, my own opinions and things I find through the internet. These are not official nor are they 100% accurate. They are just generalizations everyone hears and do not reflect the views of every person in that country.

To start us off, I will be expanding on the Eat Your Kimchi video and go into detail about Korean stereotypes of all of the ethnicities they have mentioned.

I can’t stress enough how this is not intended to harm or offend anyone. I just wish to inform to prevent any accidental negative encounters people may come across when meeting different cultures. Please bear that in mind.

Thank you, and I hope you guys anticipate the first entry.
