I read the foreword and if it seems interesting I subscribe to it, and might read, since I have other stories I haven't read yet >.<

But I don't sub to a story unless I read first.

Also, the plot can seem interesting but the content is pure *CENSOR* xD Sorry to be so harsh.

Read before subscribing, because in my opinion, sometimes the plot may catch the reader's interest, but it's a whole other story whether the author knows how to write it out correctly.
It really gets down to the small details that makes a story good enough to keep coming back to.

To find good authors,I read before sub. Then if I find one,I subbed first and read when I have time. So usually,I read then sub (find a good author is really hard).
