It's not bad. I remember when I first started out on gimp. Anyway, if you haven't checked them out already, deviantART has a lot of great tutorials for gimp. If I you were, I'd play around with text effects. You know, just pick up some skills to spruce up the titles for posters.
By the way, if you're using textures for making backgrounds etc., the "make seamless" option will forever by your best friend.
