OMG YOU GONNA LOVE THIS MORE

Okay, darlings!

As you are undoubtedly well aware, Eunhyuk and Donghae’s music video for their new single ‘I Wanna Dance’ was released today.

If you haven’t seen it yet, though we can’t imagine why, here is the link!

So… are the words “shining display of homouality” coming to anyone else’s mind, or is it just us?

It seems only fitting that the first post of this blog is dedication to this gay explosion, so here we go!

Now, let’s start with what “I Wanna Dance” is all about, according to this  post.

It appears that the song is pretty much about letting your hair down, going out to a club, and having a raging good time. Lovely.

The line “Young lady, won’t you come along tonight?” is a classic example of the necessary evil that is using gendered language to assure listeners of the artists heterouality.

Why, then, did the developers of this video make every effort whatsoever to showcase that these two guys are very clearly husbands and have no interest whatsoever in “young ladies?”

Not sure. But let’s forget about the lyrics. FORGET THEM. Let’s move on to this cluster of a video.

The video for IWD seems to completely, utterly disregard the lyrics of the song, and instead appears to show us Donghae calling up Hyukjae, asking him out on a date, Hyukjae agreeing, them both exploding into fits of joy, exercising, victory dancing, and being generally really sweet and adorable about the whole thing.

(You’ll notice I’m avoiding mentioning a) Donghae grabbing onto a certain dudes chin, and also b) Donghae’s English introduction, because I simply don’t think I can write about those two things without wanting to throw my chair through the wall. So I shant.)

First thing I noticed, was the husbands staring at each other in the opening dance moves, when Hyukjae kind of shimmies in front of Donghae and they’re doing that weird lunging-punch-y dance move. Their eyes are on each other for no apparent reason. Do with that what you will.

So yeah, Donghae and Hyukjae are in their respective bedrooms, Donghae reading (unlikely) and very bored, and Hyukjae gazing at his reflection in the mirror (not so unlikely.) Donghae apparently thinks to himself, from his rather homo and thought-evoking pose on the bed “I think I’ll call Hyukjae, see if he wants to go out tonight,” and so he does! And could Hyukjae be more overjoyed? No. He grins like a goober as he answers the phone.

To me this really looks like Donghae is asking Hyukjae out on a date, and Hyukjae seems to be rather happy to do that. So there we go.

Anyway. On the phone, Hyukjae just so happens to say “Feel good tonight” TO DONGHAE, about which Donghae seems to be quite pleased, if his weird, infuriatingly cute, toothless smile is any indication. And then the husbands hang up, Hyukjae pumps some iron (y ) and Donghae does some sort of bizarre, fancy-hands victory dance for effectively securing a date. Wonderful.

And then YO BRO WE AT DA CLUB WITH ALL OUR HOMIES AND ES. They have arrived. From…somewhere, looking all fabulous, sunglasses at night and all of that . And then they just dance for a while, which is cute I guess, and then Donghae s at the camera for a while. Nothing new there.

But where is the aforementioned “young lady?” I see female back-up dancers, but no main female character. Once again, do with that what you will. I think it’s pretty obvious.

Then gets weird. Clearly at this particular gay club (yes, gay club, c’mon guys) there is no shortage of Ecstasy because suddenly the husbands lose their ing minds. We’ve got Hyukjae tilting his glasses and doing some bizarre (rather impressive) foot action towards the camera. Cool. Great. Then we’ve got a face slap, much in tune with the previous Oppa Oppa promotions. That’s cool too.

Little bit (and I mean a little bit) of dancing with the ladies. Bit of sleaze. All good fun.

Then, Hyukjae spits into Donghae’s hand…

This could be interpreted a number of ways.

a) ually.

b) ually.

c) ually.

d) All of the above.

Because really, I see no other explanation. Why the heck would he be spitting into Donghae’s hand? There may be some other perfectly reasonable explanation, but I simply just don’t get this part of the video. Also, I’m completely unsure why Donghae is so cool with being spat on. He actually seems kinda cool with it. Interpret this how you like.

A bit more dancing. Nice. Pop, pop lock it.

And then, ladies and gents, the cherry on top of this bizarre MV.

Mr. Lee Hyukjae is just casually dancing with his minions of female admirers, and then a sleazy dude comes up behind him and grinds on him. Travesty! Hyukjae looks upset and he’s like “aniiiiyo, andwaeeeee!” What do we do about this inappropriate man?! Answer: nothing.

Some of you might say that this was some kind of bizarre homophobic, “no homo” gesture. Like, a man was hitting on Hyukjae, and Hyukjae didn’t like it. I suppose that is one way it could be interpreted. But…why? Why would they do that? There is really no reason why?

So, with years and years of context to draw on, Lea and I instead interpret it this way: it’s another little glimpse of Eunhae’s exclusiveness to each other.

Rather than Hyukjae being like “Andwaeeee, you’re a man,” instead he’s like, “Andwaeeee, you’re not Donghae!”

Seriously. And if it wasn’t obvious enough, I think the fact that Hyukjae immediately ran away and threw himself onto Donghae’s back was a pretty clear indication of that. And then, Donghae casually just carried Hyukjae off the set, apparently to go home and have a few rounds of rowdy .

So there we go.

Not sure what SM are trying to do, but it seems that Lee Soo Man may be letting up on the husbands a little, giving them more freedom, giving us little hints. Call me delusional if you like, it doesn’t matter to me! I’m just sure that they are loving being able to promote together, to record together, and to learn choreography with just the two of them. Any time alone is precious!
