Disabling Comments

I've been thinking about the "Disable comment" button at the bottom of each fanfic for quite a while now, I must say.

Pros

  • the author won't be rushed to update another chapter ---> his/her best work will be put forth
  • the author's plot won't be influenced by readers
  • the author can avoid insulting comments
  • the author does not have a chance of being discouraged (a simple "update soon" on each chapter is really disappointing and discouraging!)

Cons

  • the author will not have feeback on his/her writing
  • the author is, in a way, blocked off from the readers
  • readers are not able to express their opinions on the fanfic (unless they post on the author's wall, which is not likely

What do you guys think?

I don't know but it seems that you've come up with more pros than cons. Personally I like having story comments so that I know what my readers are thinking and what they like about the fanfic. It makes me feel good inside to see my readers commenting. If there are no comments then I think that my story so far is boring and there is nothing to say for it. But that's just me.

i understand the author wont be rushed and can avoid offensive comments.
but to me, 'update soon' is an awkward way of saying "i enjoy this!" it's like when some random person walks up to you and says something like "i like your eyelashes" its a compliment, but an odd one.
but i agree with every other point c:
