Review on SHINee's "Why so Serious?"

Okay, so you're all probably wondering why the hell I'm doing this - well, maybe not. Either way, I don't know why, I'm just bored and feel like it, okay? So, as the title says I'm going to be giving my own review to SHINee's latest MV, "Why so Serious?".

Overview

Overall, I really enjoyed hearing this song. It was an instant favorite in my book. For a lot of songs, I have to listen to it a few times before I really start to like it, but not with this song. I enjoyed the nice beat, how it was so upbeat, and I definitely enjoyed the vocals - I'll get into that later. This song, for the most part, felt like a throwback rock song out of America. And I'm not complaining. This is my style of music with a nice little modern flare - and Korean - flare to it. Yes, it was sad not seeing Jonghyun because of his injury at the beginning of April, but I understand why SM couldn't postpone promotions any longer - what with their concerts/tour (I think.) I miss hearing the Dino's voice - though, Taemin did VERY well here - and of course Onew.

The Song

Now, this is definitely an interesting song. The lyrics describe a zombie come back to life because of love, basically. It's a very new and unique approach to a typical love song, and I think it was done well. Yes, it's a bit odd, but hey, I give them props for doing something different. Now, at 0:35 I fangirled hard core. I've always loved Onew's voice - it's so beautiful and it can always make me smile and feel alive even if it's a sad song. But, hearing it that deep and rich... Ugh. So amazing. It literally just sounded like heaven - and such soft, honey - to my ears. I think I replayed that part over a hundred times. That's definitely my favorite part of the song. Also, DAMN! Taemin has really become TaeMan huh? His voice has improved so much and it's nice to see him get more lines now. But, on that same note, though it's nice he's getting his chance in the singing limelight, I feel they screwed Onew over in this song - I felt he could have had some more lines. Personally. Then again, I always feel like Key get's screwed over too... Anyway, continuing. I felt like the beginning of the chorus - the whole "Why so serious?" part - was a bit... out of place. Everything else has this funky, rock sound and this almost sounds like a pop ballad. Even if it's only for a few seconds, it really threw me off the first time I heard it and I still really don't like that part. Like, at all. I don't mind the rest of the chorus, but it's just that one part... It bothers me. Anyway, right after the first chorus, at 1:21 it really feels like a rock song. That part that Taemin sings sounds really ing familiar too and I can't place it! Lastly, all the raps done by Minho and Key were just amazing! I miss Key rapping so much. I still the best rap he ever had was in Amigo.

The Dance

THANK GOD! This dance was great. This is the kind of stuff I expect from SHINee. Though "Dream Girl" was a good song and everything, it didn't feel like a SHINee MV because their dance, in my opinion, was pretty weak. But now, we're back to amazing choreography and intense/interesting moves. There are so many moves I want to talk about. Like, at 0:20 where Taemin's singing and Key, Minho, and Onew kind of pulse back to life. I also loved Key's zombi moves at 0:29. Until I translated the lyrics, tI didn't understand what that was about, but now it all makes sense! Also, at 1:38 where Key is singing... The dance move... The only thing I could think of for some reason is "Key is feeling fabulous today!" And I have no idea why... Oh, and at 2:00, did anyone else notice the Thriller dance move? I instantly noticed it and squealed! I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan and I knew at least Taemin liked him, so it was really cool to see him perform a MJ move in a MV. If you don't understand the Thriller reference, go watch The Thriller by Michale Jackson. It's a pretty long MV, but totally worth it. All in all, this dance seemed fun, very SHINee like, and just seemed to fit with a rock song. What with all the kicks and fist pounding and just typical rock moves (don't ask). I felt at home in this. And the boys looked like they were having a great time - even if it was just because their company told them to look that way.

The English

There wasn't a whole lot of English in this song. The chorus "Why so serious?" was pronounced correctly, and didn't sound off. Hearing "rujeu" though, throws me off a little. When I first heard it in the song, I thought they were trying to say "rogue" and they just couldn't pronounce it right. But, once I looked up the lyrics I realized that was just the Korean version of the word... So, yeah... Other than that, there's not much to discuss here... I'd give them a 5 out of 5. Congratulations.

(We can all agree it's not quite SHINee without a little Bling Bling)

The Rest of the Video

SM really needs to remove those stupid, un-closeble ads. I'm getting real tired of your , SM. Anyway, I'm not surprised to see SHINee dancing in random, well-lit rooms. It's what SM does apparently. But, I guess it was nice to include the scenes in that room - which was all white and creepy in my opinion. And on that note, so... Is the girl crazy then? Because when the officer looks back into the room he just sees her dancing by herself... ? Someone mind tossing some theories my way? But anyway, I actually really liked their wardrobes for this MV. Except for the suits and the hip-length British coats. I think the suits would have looked fine on their own, but noooooooooo. But, other than that, I loved all their other outfits. Especially Key's where he has his hair spiked up and is wearing that denim jacket... Yum, that's y. (If you couldn't tell, Key's my bias in SHINee). Also, I'm surprised they used colored contacts - they chose a hazel color apparently. Honestly, maybe it's just me, but I don't understand why they need to wear colored contacts (or why SM thinks they should). Their eyes are beautiful on their own.

Anyway, when she does arrive in the boy's room, I love how they're all being jerks and stealing her from the other band members. So classy. I guess we're back the oh-so-common theme of, "we can't hire more than one female actress, so we're going to make the boys all fall in love with one girl". I mean, that has to for the boys. They find the girl of their dreams, only for the other three (normally four) boys you're living with to fall in love with the same girl. Ugh, life , huh? Also... They had a lot of random objects in that room. Like, why was Minho holding a steering wheel?

Alright, so here's my review. This is just my opinions and thoughts on it, so don't hate me. Also, if you want to - respectfully - leave a different opinion, I would love to hear them. Also, would anyone read this if I do more reviews for different songs/MVs? If so, what would you guys like to have next?
