Writing Style

Hmm... Recently I've noticed that my writing style is really lacking. I mean, the grammar, vocabulary and spelling are perfectly fine, but that little 'SPARK' that I find in all my favourite fanfics is missing in my own. I don't know how to fix it, really.

Also, looking back, I realise I write stories the way I write my essays. I give factual information, try my best to structure the story in a neat and understandable way, and even the tone of the story sounds like it should have a title of "Korean Pop Music: The Evolution From Songs To Stories".

I really don't get it. I try my best and even try to 'copy' my favourite author's writing style. But it always turns out the way I don't want it to turn out. I even try to write like this, speaking informally as if I'm just speaking to myself. However, I realise that, actually, the way I speak to myself is similar to that of me writing as essay.

Am I just meant to write essays all my life? O_o

Instead of trying to write oneshots and bigger projects, try writing smaller projects like drabbles or one sentence theme sets instead. With the smaller stuff, it's easier to practice different styles and analyze what you might be missing/lacking within your writing. Drabbles and One sentence fics are good to use because even though they are short compared to longer fics, they require a lot more thought and structure than one may think while writing them. You have to confine all it is that you want to write and do so within a few sentences while still making the effort to make it sound good.

By practicing other styles and challenging yourself to write things outside your comfort zone when it comes to prompts, different styles, or themes, it'll help you realize things about your writing that you didn't notice before.

Keep practicing and you'll find your unique style :) 'Copying' helps. You can also analyze their stories. Plot development. Flow. Sequence. Adjective, adverbs, verb tense, imageries used, figures of speech, etc. You can write the story on a blank sheet just to get the feel of how it was written. Try different styles. And you'll find your own :) I am in the process of finding that style I want to practice on :)
