Personality:

First thing people, who get to know her better, notice is that she's a very confusing person. The way she acts in different situations varies so much that nobody can really tell what's the 'real Mai'. To really discover her personality you'd need to know her from childhood. She's a very bubbly person who's very loving too. She likes learning new swear words for some reason. She's quick-witted and always knows what to say. In camera she's actually more comfortable than in practice, that's because the Mai in camera is closest to the real Mai. In practice and just outside with other people she kind of plays this role she created for herself. The real Mai has many charms if people just find out her first.

Mai's grandmother Hiroko always demanded perfection from her, so though the years she started to demand it herself too. She always aims for perfections and her perfectionism causes her often troubles because she is never satisfied with herself. She always finds something to improve in. During her school years she was always a model student and class president. Many people often just knew her by the name Miss Perfect. Only thing  people could find being wrong in her was her petite build and short height, so they bullied her for that. This 'Perfect Mai' is also the one she shows in public. She's known as 'ideal daughter-in-law" among the older generation.

Her perfection might be mostly fake, but some of her traits can definedly be considered ideal. She's elegant (that's also the meaning of her name) and petite like a flower. Her grandmother required extremely good manners from her so she's grown up to be almost too polite. She doesn't like to stand out too much, so she likes to wear simple clothing. She's not the smartes person, but she has lots of common sense. She is also very hardworking and has her goals. 

Like all people, Mai has faults too. First of all she is quite egoistic. Not in a super bad way, but she looks down to other people very easily. She also tends to expect other people aiming for perfection too, that makes her kind of demanding person. She might have lots of common sense and she's perfecly capable of taking care of herself, but she's still very naive and doesn't know that much about real life. She haven't ever had a boyfriend for example even though she was very popular amond boys in school. Not only she likes to learn new swear words but breaking the rules is something she loves, as long as she can be sure she doesn't get in trouble or caught. She'll never do anything if there is even a slightest chance, because she's very concerned about her image. You could say there's a slight rebel somewhere there, but she's careful not to show it. She dislikes both cats and dogs, but snakes fascinate her. She's also very bad with all kinds of electronical devices and has just a very, very simple phone. She's also somewhat antisocial.

Outside the camera, a for example during practice, is a different Mai again. This one is something she really wants to be, but mostly isn't and will never be. This one is confident and sarcastic. She has always admired people like that. Sarcasm is something natural for her, but rest of this Mai isn't at all. She tries very hard to walk confidently and act more comfortable in bit a boyish way. She does this quite well, but it's hard for her. She's used to walking smootly with small steps being used to wearing kimono almost everyday. In overal the manners her grandmother made her to learn are stuck deep. She was trained to be a perfect wife and the successor for the ryokan after all.

The Drive Behind it All

Family:

Grandmother | Yukimura Hiroko | 68 | She's a very strict and cold woman, who always seeks for perfection. She's conservative and to her manners and honor matter even too much. History: 

Hyunjun was just staying in an ordinary ryokan during his trip to Japan when he fell in love. The feeling was mutual.  Both of them being still young and stupid Hisako got pregnant being only 17 at the time. Naturally her mother was not pleased. She told Hyunjun to get out of her sight and never see Hisako again. He was stupid and didn't do that. Instead, he stayed. Hisako and Hyunjun got married. The mother Hiroko told her daughter not to come back before she had gotten rid of that Korean hobo. So the young couple moved Tokyo when Hisako was still pregnant.

The family lived happily in Tokyo where Mai was born too. Her parents worked really hard to support the family, but they still managed to be just a normal happy family. Her mother cleaned office buildings never being able to finish high school and her dad worked long hours in an office. Mai learned both Korean and Japanese while growing up. For her parents, Mai was the most important and precious thing. She went to ballet classes and learned how to play piano. She was just like any other little girl.

That all changed one rainy night. Hyunjun was driving home from work when he got into a car accident. He died leaving Mai without a father when she was only 7. Hisako couldn't support both her and Mai alone. There was only one option. She needed to go back home. After a week Hisako and Mai arrived to Tsunogawa with only little few suitcases with them. Mai's grandmother was there waiting for them.

After that Mai was trained to be the successor for the ryokan and she hated it. She learned to love the ryokan but hated her grandmother strict ways to teach and raise her. Her mother had no power what it came to Mai. Mai did just what her grandmother wanted and was the perfect granddaughter she wanted her to be. Finally, when Mai had graduated high school, day after she turned eighteen, she ran away. She took all her savings and most important things. Then she took the first morning train to Tokyo. There she took her tattoo and used part of her saving to one-way airplane ticket to Seoul. She wanted to become and actress and a singer. She also wanted to find her father's side of the family. After arriving she auditioned to NH Media as soon as she could. She got accepted and started living in a dorm not having money for her own appartment. She also decided to go and study acting in a university as soon as she got the money.
