새롭다- saeropta - to be new
어둡다- eodoopta - to be dark
어렵다- eoryeopta - to be difficult

All roots ending with vowels a, o, oo, eo, and i before '-ㅂ다' fall under this rule.
first take off the '-ㅂ다'

Then add '-운', hence:

When a consonant sound precedes '다':

remove the '다'
Whatever's left, add 'ㄴ'
