Korean Speech Buddy!!

Ok so I have a Korean Speech Buddy in my college and what that means is I help her with her English by talking to her for an hour every week.

Now I tend to ask her some questions about Korean culture and she's usually so surprised that I know so much. Especially the formal speech (i.e noona, oppa, unnie, and hyung)

But I asked her about skin tone in Korea and if they don't like it if Koreans have tanner skin. She was confused about that question and said that personally she really likes seeing Koreans with tans and thinks they're "really pretty." When I asked about what Koreans think about weight, however, she said that they are always concerned about weight and that they always feel like being thinner is better, but I think that's a lot of societies and not just S. Korea.

Anyway point is I feel like a lot of us think that Koreans hate their tan skin but I feel like it might all be preference because my speech buddy seemed really confused by the question. Like she's never really heard of a majority of Koreans hating their darker skin. Again it could just be her opinion but I mean she's from Seoul, she knows more than most of us do.

I just felt like I should share that!

Whew. Thanks for sharing. I remember that there was a time when I was so freaked out about having tan skin that I tried to avoid the sun so I might have a chance IF I auditioned (like that's ever gonna happen) but I live in CA so that was pretty idiotic. Yeah. This is getting really awkward. Sorry bout that. But yeah... thanks for sharing! :)

I agree. I asked a friend about it and he lives there right now and his reaction was the same.
