  • Alice. A certain boy gave her this nickname. That boy used to say how cute it was that she always seemed to have her head in the clouds. He used to say how adorable it was, that she's always stuck in her own wonderland. That boy used to say a lot of things...

style.
Your typical shirt-and-jeans girl. Average college students like her normally don't bother dressing up anyway and so,
Soojin doesn't pay much attention to fads and pretty much just goes with whatever is durable and affordable. She needs to be prioritizing her purchases and therefore doesn't have the luxury to indulge. Comfort is heavily regarded as well, as she's always on the go. Soojin likes to wear band shirts, statement shirts and minimalistically-designed sneakers. Also wears turtlenecks, button-down long sleeves and long skirts. At home, she wears loose shorts and shirts. Will never wear heels. Will never wear V-necks or anything that exposes beyond the collarbone. Ditch every other accessory, but not the wristwatch - she feels without it.

others.
Although a typical nerd would stress on hygiene issues or on the pain of getting it, Soojin, on the other hand decided to have art inked on her skin. She had the words, "You can break everything down to chemicals, but you can't explain a love like ours" tattooed on her left shoulder just below her collarbone. It's a line from The Script's Science and Faith. This tat is the reason for her non-V-neck dress code. She avoids letting anybody see the tat for the risk of being asked repeatedly what it means. More on this later.

one of a kind

personality.

Key traits: awkward, calm and stoic exterior but inwardly self-critical, empathetic and compassionate, resilent, does not get mad-gets even, practical and resourceful, somewhat self-sufficient, forward-thinker, work-passionate, a dreamer and a doer, tends to reject own feelings and be passive about the truths that may render her weak

Why fit in, when you were born to stand out? - Dr. Seuss

The Outcast. At first glance - prior to all the intimidation and the difficulty to cope with her sky-high intellect - one may actually see a cute and normal girl in Baek Soojin, but trust that this illusion of her averageness will quickly wear off. Soojin, herself knows she's weird and also kinda lame, but is not all-emo about it. Naturally, she's the type to have a bit of a low self-esteem but she shrugs it off and tries to live anyway. She's neutral about people talking about her alleged weirdness. She isn't touchy-feely and is never butthurt (or at least would not bother expressing it). She's so socially awkward that the Next Door predicts she'll end up as an old maid, taking care of a bunch of cats which will eventually eat her body after she dies.

When you're strong, show them weakness, when you're weak show them strength. - Sun Tsu

The Pseudo-Pushover.  Being a bullied nerd, she's stereotypically seen as someone spineless or someone who can easily be taken under one's wing. Well, she's not. Sure, she can pretty much tolerate bullying, but she would never - over the dead bodies of the cats that ate her dead body - ever let people copy her work or do academic papers for them. At least not for free. Somehow, she managed to fake hurt so that bullies would be happy and would leave her alone. She's the subtle type of sarcastic, and the quiet type of sadistic. She would sometimes stand back and watch people (usually the Next Door) instead of warning them when they're about to do something stupid - it's the only way she could get back at them.

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. - Christopher Titus

A Beautiful Mind.  She's quick-witted as she has fast reflexes. She's the master of improvisation, which makes her a good spontaneous problem-solver. Persistent, she never gives up until everything is quite over and damages are already irrevocable. She makes "nice saves" a lot. Although not much of a talker, she can effectively lead a group to success because of her good strategies. She's a time-conscious workaholic who actually enjoys demanding and difficult tasks. Mental challenges keep her alive, and whenever there isn't anything to be done, she feels restless and kinda empty. She grabs opportunities like how a shopaholic hauls every item she can carry from the garage sale. Today, because of her seemingly-inhuman thought capability, she earns respect from her colleagues in the engineering department and is not bullied as much as she was in high school.

A Fragile Heart. No matter how independent she is from her mom and family, Soojin's still pretty filial.  She's thoughtful and compassionate and she seeks no compensation of any form for her goodwill. She's not really shy either - she's just not fond of making a fuss about most things and wants to just quickly get over them. She tries to accept loses and defeats optimistically and she does not linger on anything that hurts or causes unnecessary discomfort (even if she has to, to completely move on from it). Thus, she does not want to get so attached easily even if she sees and appreciates the good in everyone and in most things.

A Free-Spirit. Soojin’s not an uptight person, nor does she like being restricted. She doesn’t act by the letter of the law, she reevaluates it. She likes to let loose and have fun at times too. Usually, someone needs to urge her into it and keep her away from her books for a while.

Philosophy consists very largely of one philosopher arguing that all others are jackasses. He usually proves it, and I should add that he also usually proves that he is one himself. - HL Mencken
r
The Gullible Idiot.
Soojin can quite be the impulsive one as she likes to get things done fast. Tailed to this, she takes people's words for things, rendering her naive and easy-trusting. This can lead her to be hurt; but she bounces back, just as fast. When earnestly thinking, she shuts herself from the world and no one can talk to her - thus, her late reactions. For instance, when she's in a hurry, she forgets to lock the cubicle door, and as she lifts her pants back up, a lady opens the door and sees her in that state. Soojin doesn't even flinch and gets out of the loo, poker-faced; her mind still fixated on the new machine she's trying to build. On her way home, she suddenly remembers the bathroom incident. She facepalms and frets inwardly about it, then forgets the saving grace of an idea about the machine which she failed to write down before she got distracted.

According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves. - Unknown

The Inner Romantic. Well, besides being extremely preoccupied with school and other intellectually-enriching interests, or being socially awkward (she believes that most guys can't handle her weird), Soojin has set her standards high, careful not to be in a romantic relationship with just any boy, because she knows their relatives would never let her and her mom hear the end of it. Besides, should she decide to date one of her nerdy blockmates, that hypothetical nerd would likely be scrutinized and end up getting hurt.

Soojin, however, still gets awkward whenever there's a couple around because she's inwardly curious and she wants to be in a relationship but she keeps denying this. She tends to cringe at her own actions when she's in love as well.

background.
The family of Soojin's mom is traditional (-ly annoying) and "conservative". They're kind of superficial, always looking out for the family's pride more than actually caring for each other. The Jung family is big (as in, in number) and is quite well-off. Soojin's grandparents, however, want their children to make their own fortunes and run their own lives when they leave the ancestral home. Soojin's mom is the youngest daughter - also her gramp's favorite, which is why her sisters usually are envious of her and why every mistake she makes gets ridiculed. At some point, Soojin's mom had rebelled.

Illegitimacy
Soojin's a product of an affair. Her mother didn't know Soojin's dad was already married (her dad was frustrated with his wife cause she can't give him any children) - and thus, when her mom's family found out, this almost caused them to disown Soojin's mom.

When Soojin started schooling, her illegitimacy automatically lead her to be outcasted and bullied. Soojin also hasn't always been the genius that she is. In fact, she was quite the dunce, always the last one in class rankings - a child simply would not be expected to excel when her family life was a mess. Going on first grade, the only friends she made were the nerds in class. From then on, by their influence, and by her best friend's encouragement, Soojin resorted to studying to ignore her state. Soon, Soojin got used to all the bullying that she eventually found it boring and repetitive. She decided to just not take the hit anymore.

Science and Faith Tattoo.
"The closer to the heart, the better." - these were the words that Soojin regretted ever saying to the tattoo artist. Being a fan of the The Script was where their lines overlapped - affinity was what ignited the sparks between the outcasted nerd and the campus crush who's apparently a closet intellectual. Sadly, only Soojin saw the sparks. He (I suggest he be Baekhyun, but I'll leave it up to you, author-nims), the only boy who ever took the second look at her was still trying to get over his girlfriend - who was Soojin's exact opposite. In his point of view, Soojin was someone really special - but she never was as special as his beloved ex. Soojin always hears him sing that line from Science and Faith and so she thought he was singing it for her to celebrate their extraordinary love. The hopes earned her disappointment in the end when she found out the song reminds him of his ex. Now, whenever she gets dressed and sees those words on her skin and is always reminded of the humialition, all she could do is to resent it quietly. When people suggest she have it removed, she dodges the idea, saying the process would hurt too much, or the bills would be too high, or the sessions would be too frenquent, but in truth, despite it all, she still isn't ready to erase the mark that he has made on her heart.

They parted on good terms during high school graduation, though, and Soojin's pretty okay now. She, again, chose to stay focused on her academics.

>>Hanging out in random places to study - like an empty dressing room at the mall. She often changes study venues because she got used to the other kids bothering her so she usually studies somewhere where she can be alone with her books.
>>
Word-vomitting. Tendency to explain more than she should, blurting out cheesy lines and puns, correcting people, and those "did you know that...?"  fun fact moments. Although at times she ends up cringing at herself as well. She can't help it.
>>
Making an origami piece (usually an animal) before she studies for something major. She makes a study buddy. Before she starts she has to name it first.

>>Cats. She once was bit by a cat, saw a cat being ran over by a car, saw a cat giving birth, had a nightmare that cats took over the world and they were as large as dinosaurs.

>>Acquiring airborne diseases. Inhaling second hand-smoke, being in a car with a person constantly sneezing or coughing. She doesn't react much when stuck in such situations, but inwardly, she's likely panicking.

trivia.
>>Unlike many nerds, she's not nearly blind from all the reading that she does. Yes, she wears prescription eyeglasses at times as she suffers a subtle case of astigmatism, but her nerd frame doesn't have such high a degree of correction/aid in it. She reads a lot  but she's sure that she takes proper care of her eyes.  They look like her dad's.
>>She has good taste in music, but is not exactly a muscian and is rather a lousy singer. She sings like a tone-deaf yet enthusiastic child but wears a poker-face while she's at it.
>>She has this unexplainable obssession with British boys and their accent.
>>Soojin is such a grammar nazi, that she corrects public signs: from advertisment tarpaulines to subway vandalisms.
>>Probably resulting from her lack of interaction with the opposite , Soojin's bi-curious. She has a lot of secret girl crushes.
>>She's a light-sleeper and also a little bit nightmare-prone.
>>She studies Mechanical Engineering. She has an Eagle scholarship (full tuition shcolarship until graduation) at Yonsei University.
>>She currently resides in a small apartment in Seoul near the uni.
>>She uses her native Busan accent when she's angry; and British, when she's drunk.
>>""The girl is quite stupid; but so is the boy for liking the girl." Soojin's take on One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful.
>>"This one is nice, though." Soojin's take on One Direction's One Thing.  "But the boy is still stupid until he finds out what that One Thing is."
>>Seafood allergy.
>>She knows basic self-defense (Krav Maga).
>>She finds Niccolo Machiavelli's political philosophy very interesting.
>>Her hair when she studies at home.
>>Agnostic. Her family (mother's side) is falsely religious. They go to church every Sunday, only to gossip about neighbors the second they get out of the holy house. Soojin realized how ironic and wrong they were acting and therefore this lead her to cast her "vote" in religious views as "abstained" for the time being.
>>She runs fast.
>>She has a very good memory which she sometimes can't appreciate because she tends to remember a lot of things that she doesn't even want to remember. She also tends to overthink a lot so her usual enemy is headache.

saranghae, saranghae

family.
father. Baek Seungho // 50 // Concert Producer // A kid at heart - he's the kind of man who would seem foolish because of his bold and risky youthful ideas, but he's in fact very competent and he always knows what's he's doing. He has a soft spot for women and he's very loving and sensitive, however, he won't let these sides of him show so easily. // Awkward. Like, he would oftentimes ask Soojin to hang out and then ask her the same questions of "How are you?" or "How's school?" and receives the same reply from her of, "Fine. Everything's great...d-dad." It's pretty routinal. And then, he does this awkward patting of the head. Basically, they hang out because they kinda have to, because...they're kinda father and daughter. Despite the awkward, though, Soojin secretly looks up to her father so much.
mother.
Jung Sora // 44 // constantly shifting from one job to another; typically has 2-3 contractual jobs // She's childish, a bit naive, reckless, and is quite a sore loser. Nonetheless, she's charming, and also very caring and protective of her loved ones. // She acts like a normal mom to Soojin and she tries hard to be a good one. Soojin handles Sora's mishaps and shortcomings patiently and tries to be responsible beyond her years for the both of them.

aunt. Jung Dahee // 46 // corporate lawyer and recently, also a textile entrepreneur // The still-single, yet sucessful and outspoken woman. She's pretty boastful about her achivements and she always makes sure that she shoves it in Sora's face. She is the second eldest daughter who is most isecure of Soojin's mother. // Despite the never-ending rivalry between Dahee and her mom, Soojin's aunt doesn't pick on her all the time and she somewhat developed a liking towards Soojin because of her exceptional mind (which Dahee claims Soojin had inherited from her). However, that is not to say that Dahee never points out the misfortunes in Soojin's life, especially the one about her non-existent romantic affairs. Dahee's kinda glad her niece's love life isn't any better than her own.

friends.
friend. Kim Kibum // 22 // uni student; part-time Baek Soojin assassin (self-procliamed) // Also known as the Next Door, Key is sassy, sarcastic, narcissistic, arrogant but has these naive moments from which Soojin more often than not refuses to save him. // On normal days, Key always finds opportunities to mock Soojin and put her down comically in the most creative ways possible. Soojin grins and bears it (although the habit of grinning eventually died down and so it's mostlly the bearing part now) However, despite all this, Key always claims himself as Soojin's friend (if not assassin) as he actually knows her better than it seems. He actually admires her dedication towards her endeavors. However, as he sees that Soojin needs to be trusting herself more, he practices tough love - thus, his sarcastic remarks on Soojin's showcase of weakness.
best friend.
Park Sandara // 27 // currently on a job hunt // This quirky and charming girl always looks forward to the good things life has to offer. She's persistent with her goals as Soojin is, but Dara tends to be more happy-go-lucky than focused. She is just so cute that people often think Soojin and she are of the same age. // She's Soojin's childhood friend back in Busan. She taught Soojin to be more optimistic and resilient. She's the only one with whom Soojin can be completely honest.
friend.
Kwon Boa // 27 // uni professor // Professor Kwon is a very beautiful lady who is a bit oblivious about that fact because of her dedication to her career. She is like an older version of Soojin, only more confident and normal and verbal about her single status bitterness. Boa can't stand injustice, she's approachable but kinda moody. Many men are intmidated by her perfection and intellectual capability. Boa is most insecure about her height. // She's the adviser of Soojin's block. Boa admires Soojin's intellectual prowess paired with her diligence and dedication. She believes in Soojin so much and she always helps her like a sister whenever she can.

enemy.
N/A because she doesn't have time to waste on petty fights and she's mature enough to not bear grudges against those who have wronged her in the past. She's also socially awkward and therefore doesn't have enough interactions with people to actually form a rivalry or quarrel with them.

Ok. Maybe, Key? :))))

gossip boy

your boy's personality.

Key traits: existentialist philosopher, exotically charming social butterfly, positive energy source, straightforward and sensual, just, goal-oriented, occasionally bipolar

Naturally curious, easily fascinated and excitable; he's quite inquisitive and he delights in learning new stuff everyday. He has the suitable charms which earn him the ability to get along well with all sorts of people. His vitality and amusing enthusiasm is very refreshing and contagious. He's like your daily dose of Vitamin C. Yes. He's a freaking. Vitamin. C.

Stereotypically sharp-tongued as he tends to be very frank at all times, but he never means harm and sugarcoating's really just a vague concept to him. He is uninhibited and the concept of physical intimacy to him does not equate to violating another’s privacy, but is rather a rightful expression of fondness or appreciation towards the person.

He's wired to be loyal; thus, in his own logic, he has to be at least a little bit possessive in return. He can’t stand the idea of someone being left out and being done injustice. He’s considerate and he knows how to put himself in another’s shoes.

He tends to be helpful, tends to have the pleasant initiative – although he can be a little bit clumsy sometimes as he has a lanky built. Yes, he always likes to have fun but at the same time, he’s responsible and smart and he carries out every single task at hand. He’s quite persistent and he always gives his best shot, even sometimes compromising his own welfare.

If he senses that he did not do well enough, he’ll quietly be disappointed in himself.
Therefore, as he’s usually an overly-enthusiastic dork, he also has these creepy moments of being uncharacteristically quiet and calm. This means he’s thoroughly contemplating on his deeds and possible points for self-improvement.

and how does this boy act 'round ya?

At first, he acts very formally towards her because she's sort of his boss. He’s obedient to Soojin and is enthusiastic when helping her with something. He seems to be happy whenever he gets to be useful. However, having a feature of friendliness and knowing well that Soojin is the human that he’d be interacting with the most, he asks her to be friends. As their friendship develops, he gets comfortable and goes natural with the skinship.

Eventually, he treats Soojin like his personal object of amusement (to compensate for the boring hours of being locked up alone inside her apartment). For example, he would play with her hair, squish her cheeks between his palms whilst mocking her with puppy faces, pinch her untoned arms and belly to intimidate her, poke at her sides randomly for no particular reason, grab her wrists from behind and make her move like a puppet, about her imperfections whilst laughing heartily (if he actually laughs), tickle her to death on the couch when she least expects it.

He can be pretty goofy with her at times, however, when he senses she’s already pissed (which she would never verbalize), he’ll suddenly straighten up and start to treat her formally all over again. Soojin finds this habit of him cute.

He’s sensitive and attentive to her needs and actions and knows how to take care of her over-all: be it emotionally or health-wise. He also acknowledges her good sides.  He’s very supportive of her and he always cheers her on in whatever she does – even the littlest things like fixing the faucet (which he by the way he caused to be faulty). Sometimes, he even claps like a child bewildered by a magic trick. Soojin sometimes can’t tell if he’s being sarcastic.

Meanwhile, he shuts himself away from her or keeps quiet when he’s done something wrong. He’s likely ashamed of himself and thinks that she’s disappointed in him.

scene requests?

>>The humanoid creates a period mixtape for Soojin in which Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love is the first track.
>>Key is on a major Annoy Soojin day - he gives her an earful about her singing. The humanoid interjects in her defense asking Key, "Why are you bashing on her so hard? I bet she's not that bad..." Key smirks and retorts, "You haven't heard her sing, have you?" and just goes playing his precious blackmail material strategically stored in his phone to give the humanoid a listen. The humanoid eventually joins Key in his smitting endeavors after hearing the clip.
>>The humanoid, out of nowhere, picks up the guitar and sings either The Script's Science and Faith or Ed Sheeran's Little Things as Soojin studies.
>>Soojin and the humanoid act out a scene from Romeo and Juliet out of sheer boredom. Soojin insists she be Romeo, and the humanoid be Juliet.
>>The humanoid develops some sort of crush on Dara  for sometime >:)))
>>The humanoid learns what sarcasm is and fondly uses it all day which may or may not get him in trouble.
>>Humanoid asks Soojin out on a date all so suddenly. Perhaps at a wrong time; when there is something major at the uni that she'll have to refuse..

suggestions:

soojin's specs sheet/ qualities wishlist:

(I’m sorry if this is going to seem redundant, but this how Soojin would likely phrase her ideal humanoid.)

1.    Attractiveness that would shut my aunt up the second she sees it. A tall one, preferably – as tall almost always is attractive. A charming one which can make my aunt Dahee go, "My, my! I wish I had a son like you!" Not really looking for the Daniel Henney type of debonair - just one with boyish charms and er...a...pretty face.
2.    One which speaks my language. One that will not stupidly space out whenever I talk comfortably. Preferably, one that is as weird as me.
3.    An amiable one which can make me feel at ease in its presence because I swear I'm really awkward all the time.
4.    One which is able to prove a point and defend people (Yes, people – need not be me, specifically) without engaging to any violent acts.
5.    One which is into the field of medicine. I can be its robot doctor; it can be my human nurse/nutritionist. Whenever I neglect myself, it should be persuasive enough to convince to be more healthy.
6.     A quirky and interesting individual which can be my energizer whenever I'm too tired to work or study.
7.    An imperfection.

backstory and whatnot

  • Soojin’s humanoid is one of the first units built by the robotic engineer. That humanoid is kind of special and has greater sentimental value compared to others, because the engineer built him originally as his experimental robot friend. (So, Soojin’s humanoid is naturally friendly.)
  • His system wasn’t really adjusted -  his features were just improved. Like, they didn’t take out his friendly function or completely reset him and just added stuff like potential lover functions. The engineer liked him as he is.
  • He has a structural framework glitch. For this reason, he isn’t advised to be utilized in combat or any such activity that would cause him to  be damaged seriously—or even worse—beyond repair. This works for Soojin because she particularly listed off that she would like a boy who doesn’t resort to violence to protect people.
  • He is a bit cheaper than the newer models. This works for Soojin as well because the family situation was quite urgent and she didn’t happen to have much savings for a sudden purchase.
  • It’s not to say that this humanoid experiences constant “symptoms” or mishaps, though. He’s well-functioning; he just a little bit frail physically; but his “brain” is exceptionally sharp compared to other humanoids.
  • Soojin’s humanoid has been activated for the longest time—earning him more experience and knowledge about the world. In fact, the humanoid himself examined and studied Soojin’s profile and specifications sheet, instead of having the engineers automatically install the info in him.
  • Also, for the reason of being one of the oldest, he has a close relationship with all the other humanoids, especially in his line (EXO). He tends to get excited and be welcoming to “newborns”.
  • How Soojin introduces the humanoid to her family: "Well, everyone, this here is [insert his name] . He's the one."
That answer has been  deliberately planned, all the possible questions thought of and answered in the most truthful way possible. He is the one because she has been talking about bringing someone to the reunion. She didn't say 'boyfriend' or 'friend', but 'the one'.
  • Soojin is studying mechanical engineering, so she’s really fascinated about him. She finds him really pretty and precious so she tends to be protective of him. But she really just sees him as mere equipment (no matter how terrifyingly human he could be sometimes) and it’s what she’d like to keep seeing him as because she thinks she’d look and feel even more pathetic about herself if she develops attachment to or have romantic feelings for a robot.
  • The humanoid might "feel" a bit useless or frustrated in some respect because of his glitch. /shrugs

I'm sorry the app's too long :(  I have a difficulty writing concisely. I haven't been writing seriously for a while either, so please forgive my mishaps. Thank you for being so accommodating. I hope I get really lucky to have the privilege of you writing for me again :)

/edit And wow. I honestly didn't intend to, but I think I might have unconsciously used Absolute Chanyeol as reference. Oh well.
