( ★ ) but gentlemen marry brunettes” — Being raised in a respected family that was known for their wealth and name, values that

girls in the 50s had were drilled into Yeoreum: she waits until marriage, she has high standards (especially in romance, as her father wants

her to marry a gentleman), is always politely mannered (but she can be more freewheeling and talk her age), and the list could go on - she's

just an old soul in a young lady. All in all, she's the girl that parents would like their sons to bring home to meet because of her humble,

kind demeanor. Her upbringing, however, made a change in her personality; her parents never really gave her any opinion of her own because

it was always repressed by them. For instance, if someone asked her what her favorite color was, then she wouldn't know how to reply to

the simple question; she'd just say she likes blue. They would probably choose the college she would go to, what she should major in, and what

job would be suggested (more like implied) for her to apply for. And in spite of this, Yeoreum doesn't like it; she doesn't like how she lives off

of her family name because people would say, "Well, if I was a Choi, then I could achieve it, but I'm not." She wants to make a name for

herself, not because she is a Choi, but because of what she would achieve things because she worked hard for it. Although she knows that she

wouldn't be able to (even though she hasn't tried) because in her mind was engrained the idea of doing something correctly - to sharpen it at

its finest point. So there was no point in achieving it when you don't know how, because if you don't know how, then how are you ever going to

do it correctly, how are you going to exceed the expectations? Her family's motto is about it after all - "if you don't do it greatthen don't do it at

all."

( ★ ) like bamboo, you bend in the wind — Yeoreum is a pushover - and she's quite aware of this. Typically, because she is a the

daughter of a CEO - and a prominent one at that - often means that she would be a spoiled, arrogant brat because it's stereotyped that

her parents spoil to death: not with her. You see, she's the one that people walk all over like a rug; the one that always gives, but never takes.

If you were to ask her to do something later ("Hey, Yeoreum, can you do this for me?" "Of course."), then she would accept the errand without

a moment's thought, not even considering what she would do later on. She's selfless, a generally good trait, but there's always faults in

everyone's stars. She's selfless in a way that she doesn't give a thought of what she truly wants. It's always for that other person because she

sees it as that when the person she sacrificed for is happy, then she should be too. Through this, she's learned how to master her emotions

and can conceal them with ease. In love, she's the same: always giving, never taking. In one time, there was a friend of hers that liked the

same boy she did, but being a too shy to say anything, she helped her friend write a love-letter because she wanted to confess to him in an

indirect way. In the end, her friend and the boy she liked ended up dating, nonetheless, she kept her head held high and supported the two.

Sometimes, one can forget if she has any emotions in love because of her skill in hiding her feelings - but it's still there, collecting dust. Rarely

has she ever had a boy really like her; most were just there for her family's fame and wealth. As a result of this, she can tell whether the boy's

advances are real or fake from a mile's distance. If it's fake, no problem for her; she's unaffected and stays rooted to the ground, like bamboo

when the breeze pasts by. On the other hand, if they're genuine, something she's never seen, then that will become a problem because,

despite the bamboo being strongly rooted to the ground, the one that's serious and cuts it down will make it fall. That's what she's scared of

because every time before, when she would hope someone would catch her when she falls, it never happens. (and it never will, she would

assume).

★ actions speak louder than words” — Compared to her two other siblings, she seemed pale in comparison. Her older sister

accomplished being accepted in the Juilliard School and was performing in the prestige of society's performing arts, the New York Philharmonic

being one of them. Her younger brother is a soccer star, being the reason her school was in the top ranks in high school soccer, his inevitable

future being a successful one. And what was she? she would ask herself. You could compare her to the person with a passable grades, but they

could never surpass her younger brother's or older sister's flying colors. Her insecurity left her along with the sidelines because she felt she

wasn't good enough to live up to the Choi name, but sometimes, there are perks to being a wallflower. She's become an observant girl that can

see through other people's actions and can read them like a book. With an astute mind, she automatically calculates what would happen and

what their actions could lead to, but she doesn't judge them for it. She sees the world for how it really is, all of the good and the bad, but takes

it with open arms. But even with this, her family finds something to exploit from it. The council (refer to family section) of the Choi family

dictates her life and what they ask of her is because of political, business reasons. The school she attends is filled with some of the creme of

society's children, so she gives them statistics and info on them, like each grade they recieve on each test. They dictate her to befriend them

and if ever questioned, her acting skills would be unquestionable to those who don't really know what's going onIt's something, although

unsaid, she hates to do, but it's unchangeable because blood runs thicker than water - the age old saying. But there are after effects too when

it comes to these things; the school's nickname for her is "witch" because of this - although rarely used because of her social standing - with

the the student body president as her best friend being a reason for her nickname. Yeoreum is a witch because of her actions and her

background, but she's the witch that isn't really evil because of the latter. And no one really notices because in the world, people are too quick

to judge now.

★ fairytales can come true, it can happen to you” — In times, one can forget many things about Yeoreum. With many labels that surround

her, she's the forgotten heiress because of her background, she's the witch because her actions, she's an asset that can be married off, but

then there's a side to where people don't bother to pay attention for. That teenage girl side. The naive and the learning side. Her outer shell is

beyond her age, even cunning and cold like a Choi she was brought up to be, but at heart she's young and can trust easily. The only times she

would remember this was when her mother was alive. When she was younger, Yeoreum would mistake her mother for the mother of Jesus and

she still would have if Sohee didn't pass away. This is the part where she's herself: cheeky one-liners exit and she can actually be

considered cute. She smiles more, this time, reaching her eyes,

history :

To start off, the Choi's were an old and prestigious family, like South Korea's aristocrat dynasty. Old money was always associated with

the name Choi, along with extravagant, socialite parties, and economic movement - they were and are probably the most influential

family in the entire nation. In the public's eyes, their life was perfect; the luxury of not worrying about debt and taxes, nor paying for

their child's college fund because their reputation itself would already be enough to be accepted into top universities; not just nationwide

but globally as well. In the Choi family, there is the main family and the branch family, where the elders are from; in a way, they act as

advisors to Choi Jungnam in his decisions for the Choi Group.

Now there's the main family; the people that would control the Choi Group's activities or were directly related to them. These consisted of

Choi Jungnam, Moon Sohee, Choi Sooyoung, Choi Junhong, and - our heroine - Choi Yeoreum. From early on, the two siblings,

Sooyoung and Junhong displayed a knack for anything that involved them being gifted in anything. It was clear that they were their

father's children. Now, there's Yeoreum, who resembled Sohee most than her brother and sister. Quiet compared to her boisterous

siblings, she enjoyed reading, drawing, or some kind of art that made her use her head rather than . At age twelve, her

mother died and that pretty much started everything she wish never did. The separation of her friends, the comparisons between her

and her brother and sister - especially by the only parent she had left. By high school, she's the only person left from her group and has

orders from the elders to get to know peers that might be an advantage to the Choi Group. And now, the label "Witch" is bestowed on

her, just to indicate her as a word that was rhymed and spelt smiliarly to her nickname. She's called fake because, hey, isn't she? To be

friends with someone with ulterior reasons, isn't she?

family :

father :

C h o i  J u n g n a m / 50 / CEO of the Choi Group / alive / stoic, ambitious, traditional, dignified

Yeoreum has an estranged relationship with her father.

mother :

M o o n S o h e e / 49 / housewife / deceased / elegant, soft-spoken, forgive-can't-forget, diligent /

One of the

sibling :

C h o i  S o o y o u n g / 22 / college student ; juilliard school / alive / animated, easy-going, outspoken, clever /

These two siblings have a love-hate relationship. Sooyoung, being Sooyoung, loves to tease and annoy Yeoreum ("because it's my

job to," Sooyoung says with a cheeky grin). She likes to see Yeoreum's reactions of when she annoys her because of her slight

immaturity, but she still completes the role of being the oldest of the three Choi siblings. However, Yeoreum's older sister can be

serious when she wants to be; Sooyoung knows Yeoreum like the back of her hand. In spite of the four-year-age difference, they are

quite a pair that can easily be in sync just as they are out of synch: Sooyoung helps Yeoreum by bringing out her confidence while

Yeoreum is the calm one with Sooyoung's rambunctious actions. Yeoreum also brings out Sooyoung's protective side, particularly when it

comes to love.

C h o i ' Z e l o ' J u n h o n g / 16 / high school student ; captain of the basketball team / fearless, charming, cunning, straight-forward /

Junhong is usually scolded by Yeoreum. Quite a reckless spirit, he's very free-wheeling like his other sister and is a prankster

when you get beneath the I'm-the-heir-of-the-Choi-family layer; a reason why Yeoreum scolds him. He teases her (which she simply

ignores) and whenever she asks him to do something, then Junhong will complain, but he'll still do it anyway. He loves Yeoreum

because she's like his second mother as she makes him lunch or other things, but he'll never tell her so. He's a teenaged boy, and

like any, his pride doesn't let him do so.

friends :

best friends :

image

W u ' K r i s ' Y i f a n / 18 / high school student ; student body president / intelligent, two-faced, snarky, blunt  /

With him, Yeoreum can drop the act of playing the "lady." Labels are removed when these two are together and it's just a boy and a girl

as best friends. Kris is a two-faced person, the cold, enigmatic (and smartass) side usually overtaking the other, rarely seen one. He

gives off the image of always being the serious person who's brilliant bakground and smarts lead to a predetermined future. Often, he

can be uptight, but being a "king" of his school, he sees how the world really goes because he comes from an old and affluent family as

well. Yeoreum, with her mixture of formality and playfulness is often the only one that Kris won't be two-faced with because the "student-

government-president" image goes down the drain when he's with her. He likes to and he does it often, loosening her tight

bun and asking random, candid things that make her ruffle her feathers ("Are you on PMS or something?" he blurts out. "No! I'm not!").

He can be rather protective of her though - how can he help it when he's been friends with her since age six?

personality : A relatively silent person, he shares similarities to Yeoreum, like coming from an old and affluent family and seeing through

people and their actions. But unlike her, he's known around the school for his background, good looks, and ranking number one in academic

standings. He was like the epitome of perfect - well, to some; viewed as cold and has-a-smartass-sidecomment-for-everything, but because of

his features, he has a "bad boy" aura around him, making him popular among the females. Nevertheless, with the few people he's close to, he

teases them good-naturedly and is a tower support. His flaws, other than being cold and blessed with an even colder words, is his selfishness

and stubborness. However, he's the type of "tsundere" sort of person who is actually kind-hearted when you get past the out layers - sort of

like an onion.

relationship :  Same as with Kris [ refer to friends section ]

how did you guys meet? : They met when it was on a Halloween day*. Yeoreum didn't like dressing up in a costume, but her mother was

stubborn women so she ended up handing out candy to the children that passed by. That's when she saw her future (best) friend. They both

knew it was going to be awkward when his mother pushed him toward the doorstep, but she just went through the motions of handing him

candy. Then, it ended with a mumbled exchange of "thank you" and "your welcome" along with a more awkward smile, the rest, well, being

history.

REVERSE, REVERSE QUESTIONS :

O1. why can't you let go of 27th avenue? all the other girls did. :

i guess it's because of my overall character. [shrugs] i have an interest in old - classic - sort of things, like those black and white movies or Hollywood's golden age wtih Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. those type of things, you know? i'm the most introverted out of all of us, i tend to dwell into my thoughts more and recall memories that most of us have probably forgotten. i don't know if i should be happy or sad about it, in all honesty. and if you think about it, it's probably going to be the same answer: you're sad that you can't live it again, but you're happy that you did. that's why it's called nostalgic. because who really wants to say that much to sum up one feeling?

O2. what's your favorite memory of 27th avenue including all the girls?  :

there's so much, i can't even pick... i think there was this one particular time when we all got together to have a sleep over at dahye's house. we spent the entire time watching disney movies and talking about the boys and their "buttheadedness" and how we would fix that. we stayed up so late, even after dahye's mom told us to sleep. it was around eleven or twelve when most of us went to bed; i was excluded. i had a hard time falling asleep so i ended up staying up the entire night, sitting on the edge of the bed. when i was watching the sun come up, in the middle of the room was all of them, somehow sleeping closely together - and even minjung too, the hot-headed princess - on the makeshift matress, like they would never be separated.
