The pros and cons to staying on AFF

I was introduced to Asianfanfics what feels like a lifetime ago. I officially joined on 5-5-2011 because I wanted to be able to bookmark my favorite stories.

It was wonderful. There was a relatively large group of talented users whose stories I enjoyed reading. I even decided to write down a few stories.

But as with everything, over time Aff changed, and I'm not quite sure if it's for the better.

Sure, expanding to include more members is always good, but this also means that it can get difficult to find really good writers in the sea of people who either don't use a beta when it would benefit them, or just don't bother to use spellcheck.

Then the new functions started rolling in.

It is difficult to navigate search results if they are split between regular stories and ones rated "m". Especially if people are lazy like me, and put the entire story under "m" to avoid clicking the button for every rated chapter. So those stories are mixed in with just pure .

I don't always appreciate the notifications that pop up because they are distracting.

I realize that revenue must be made somehow, but I really think there should be a limit to where you can post ads.

I was sorely disappointed when comments started becoming censored, and then had the bloody annoying "30 characters minimum" requirement imposed on it. I get why that could have happened, but I REALLY hate it when people tell me what to do, and limiting what I can say on a relatively anonymous forum. It's not just to punish those users that never cussed out anyone by limiting what we can say.

Last but not least, the older users are growing up. Slowly, we start leaving the fandom one by one in favor of reality. I'm already feeling old, and I haven't hit 20 yet.

I don't know if I'll leave AFF any time soon, but at the rate things are going, it will probably be sooner than later. Not in a happy mood right now, and I really wanted to say this for quite some time now.

Tell you what, I get where you are coming from. But I am only on here to talk to the people I have been rambling to forever. If I do read fanfics I go to LJ, I don't even bother looking for good QMi on here anymore. And I don't post stories either, because even though I 'quit' writing, I've gotten bored a few times. Those stories just go to my best friend. I guess we just don't really 'need' the online community as much anymore?

I just turned 19. In LJ or Winglin, I always called everyone JieJie (older sister)
But here I'm the one being called Unnie or Jie.
I feel so old.
Then I just read a blog about an author leaving AFF because she is 18 and uni life is waiting.
I'm 19, in my second year of Uni, do you know how reading that makes me feel?
It's like I don't have a life... *Sobs

I agree too! The only good fics I can find are the old ones that are already completed! And a few new ones too, but still :/

I've already been thinking about leaving aff but as a writer because I don't have much time these days. I'd still like to read 2min fics though :')

I'm only 17...turning 18 in a few months and I feel a bit old too! </3 ;_;

But I've also been thinking about going back to writing on fanfic.net because I miss writing about my favourite anime! </3

I couldn't agree more. I get that parents are getting upset by their underage children reading "", but, jeez, make it so you have to be to join or something.

I joined AFF sort of recently (Jan of this year), and as the year has progressed, I cant seem to find any good fics anymore. It's being over run by little kids who are obvious virgans trying to write and like you said, don't even bother with spellcheck.

The few amazing stories that I stumble across have so few veiws that it honestly hurts.

I want to finish up everything that I have started, and, I may end up joining the crowd that is leaving...

daw, well if it makes you feel any better I'm thirty, and I'm still fangirling. haha

i know what you mean though; the changes are really different and hard to get used to if you're a member before they came to being, but it's pretty similar to other forum sites and stuff elsewhere. AFF is still probably the most liberal.
