Personality:

»off and on camera: Off camera, Chinsun is rather quiet and introverted, preferring to be the person who listens in the conversation rather than the person who talks the most. She would be asked many questions (“why are you so quiet?” or “are you okay?”) simply because of the wallflower appearance she has and the lack of emotion she has on her face. She isn’t really sad most of the time - which people assume she is - but she just doesn’t have any point of smiling all the time, along with the fact that her true personality only appears when she’s with the people she’s close to. Always polite to the people she meets, she’s quite perceptive, always noting other people’s actions and can effortlessly tell who’s lying to her and who’s not. She’s usually the first one to find out secrets by reading people like a book when they interact with another, but doesn’t go about telling anyone - she simply accepts the fact and will move on. On camera, she has a strong stage presence, a 360 degree change from her quiet persona off camera.  Her almost nonexistent charisma off stage appears subconsciously and will seep into her dancing and singing. On variety shows, she’s quite funny with her witty and sarcastic humor and would be asked to act sassy and talk in English (a bit like Brian Joo on the variety shows). Despite all this, she doesn’t like too much attention on her, only talking when spoken to or asked to, nicknamed “the quiet one” compared to other members. If insulted or criticised, her feelings don’t show, not one bit, and she keeps closed, taking in the burden without complaints; afterwards, she would work harder to become better. It’s her way to get revenge - by success.

»it’s female intuition: She’s an old soul. Due to the strict family environment she grew up with and her grandmother practically raising her, she’s more mature than what most people act like at her age. She listens to music that her grandmother listens to and enjoys being around older people than younger people. She understands things better than most people and is level-headed, rarely ever getting mad and would be told that she talks mature for her age. She has a unique view of the world; she sees how people really act like when they think that no one’s looking and see the world for how it is, all the good and the bad, and doesn’t judge. But along with this trait of having an old soul, along comes her female intuition. She has a quality of being motherly and telling people to remember their manners when the forget it. She always has a way with taking care of another person, calling some of her group members her “children” and cooking for them. She’s often the one that does the laundry or cleaning around the house, her expertise being in multitasking. But this doesn’t mean she does everything; she can be a disciplinarian when it comes to procrastinating, saying that when she tells you to get something done, you get it done. In serious situations, when there’s a scandal of some sort and she or other members are bombarded with questions of it, then she’s the first to react with her quick and believable response. She thinks about what to do next strategically and always has an analysis of consequences with every choice she makes.

»you give too much: Chinsun is selfless. She’s naturally generous in her nature and is the one in the group that would always be there to listen to the problems of other members, giving them advice even if she has never experienced the situation. She gives off the feeling of being the person that you would be able to tell everything and she wouldn’t judge you in anyway, but would keep quiet about it and would understand. She doesn’t take compliments very well, always pointing out that another person is better than her, like her group members.  She’s really good at making people feel guilty, whether it be intentional or not, with the compliments she has for them: she subtly directs the attention to another group member by complimenting them so much that they would be awkward and be shy about it. When she’s sick, she doesn’t tell anyone, but keeps her problems to herself, cooking for herself and taking medicine for herself - she isn’t a babied member. She would go to work, practice, and perfect anything that she has a mistake on even if she isn't feeling well.

»perfectly imperfect: Although some people strive for perfection, there will always be the flaws and Chinsun is no exception. She’s selfless, but this could also affect herself and she wouldn’t allow others to help her, preferring to keep her problems drawn. She spends all her time helping other people before she could help herself and that puts a toll herself, making her more tired and unable to perform properly. She has a hard time facing problems, digressing the real situation by talking about something else that is completely out of subject, but at the same time, she hates to hold out choices and likes to make the agreement then and there. Occasionally, she can get rather competitive to things she knows she’s good at, like ballet or performing, and hates the feeling of losing; she’s stubborn. Sure, she can hide this trait of hers, but it’s still there. Her stubborn trait could be a blessing and a curse to her. Her stubbornness could be the one that drives her to do the things she’s passionate about, but sometimes she’s stubborn about the wrong things. She also has a breaking point, even if doesn’t quite come to you at first, and you would be able to tell with the way she clenches her fists. She doesn’t release it by screaming at you or hurting you; instead, she uses words. Her face would be blank and eyes relaxed, but what escapes could blackmail you because she has discovered your secrets without you knowing - she makes the words hurt because it’s the truth

Background:

»你好: Yin Chinsun was born in Busan, South Korea before immigrating to Shanghai, China at age five; her father was a bilingual business representative, which was the reason why Chinsun's family moved often. Her parents both worked often so Chinsun and her sister was practically raised by their grandmother, Lee Saerom, the person closest to them. Jinju was a academic prodigy that skipped two grades, along with her stunning looks and charismatic personality, she was the “it” girl of her school  - she had taken her parents attention away from Chinsun. Her older sister did nothing however and admired Jinju because of her talents, trying to be like her by attempting to get better grades because she felt she needed to live up to the expectations Jinju had set. But as more and more people had begun to compare the two sisters and pity the older, Chinsun had decided that it wasn't worth it and accepted the fact that she was to be a wallflower. When Chinsun had turned nine, the family of four had moved to London, UK.

»Hello: Chinsun was used to the constant moving due to her father’s job so she had quickly adapted to London. She had learned how to speak, write, and read basic English the year before as it was what her parents always did before moving to another place. Her place behind her younger sister’s shadow had continued and she was still the wallflower. During this time, she had started taking up ballet, hip hop, and other dance classes with her grandmother paying for it, since her grandmother wanted to see her dance ballet - she had excelled in this. She kept this hobby of hers as a secret that only her family and few friends knew about and would only tell if someone had asked. During her high school years, one of her few friends was a person that did song covers and posted them on Youtube. After many times of asking, she had convinced Chinsun to collaborate in a cover of “Hero” by Mariah Carey; soon, SM Entertainment’s very own Lee Sooman had stumbled upon it. He regarded Chinsun’s singing and offered her a deal: she would go to Seoul, the entire trip paid by SME, to go through stages of auditions. Chinsun was skeptical so she went to the first person on her list - her grandmother. Chinsun had told her everything and Saerom had only asked if she wanted to take it. Her granddaughter replied “yes.”

»안녕하세요: Her grandmother arranged for Chinsun to come with her to Seoul for the annual vacation she made every summer to meet relatives in Korea. Her parents could not disagree with her grandmother’s wishes so they allowed her to bring Chinsun along without their knowing of SME’s offer to Chinsun. They stayed in Chinsun’s aunt’s house in Seoul where Saerom decided on the song Chinsun would sing: “Morning Dew” by Yang Hee Eun. Later on, she had arrived to SME’s headquarters late, giving the judges a bad impression of her and even more so on wallflower appearance, but when they heard her interesting song choice and the emotion in her powerful vocals, instantly, they were captivated. She had left and a week later, she had a callback where they wanted her to dance to any song that they chose and to her surprise, it was Bach’s Cello Suite Prelude, a song she had danced to in one of her ballet performances. Afterwards, they accepted her as a trainee.

Mother:  Lee Hanei | 46 | anesthesiologist | alive/deceased | Hanei is a highly critical person. She has extremely high expectations of her children and herself, often having a short temper. She’s a stone-hearted, practical woman that is hard to gain her trust, but once you do, she gives you a loyalty that’s rare to find. Although she seems hard to get along with because of her temperamental personality, highly critical tongue - which could also be brutal honesty - and high expectations, her good traits are that she’s considerate, selfless, and determined. She may not be the typical selfless person, but she devotes her time, effort, and money to things that are important to her loved ones, always considering them whenever she makes an important decision. | Her relationship with Chinsun by far is the most distant in the family. She would blatantly compare her to her youngest daughter, often saying things (“why aren’t you more like your sister?”) that hurt Chinsun’s feelings. In truth, she had only tried to give what she thought would be the best for her daughter, but was always blind of what she really wanted because she had never given a thought of it, meanwhile Jinju could do everything that Hanei wanted both to do.

Father:  Yin Seunghyo | 47 | bilingual business representative | alive/deceased | Seunghyo is strict, stoic, and calm. His face is blank frequently and it will take much effort to make him laugh; people may find him intimidating because of this, but he’s actually quite kind and cares for his family, even though it rarely shows. He only has a hard time showing his feelings because of the strict upbringing he had when he was a child, which also channeled into his parenting. He’s just subtle in the way of showing his affections for his family, like being silent when comforting someone or gently squeezing a hand to show support. | His relationship isn’t exactly close to Chinsun, but he isn’t distant to her either - it’s in the middle. Due to his job, he doesn’t see her quite a lot, but has a mutual understanding with her. She has a more direct and blunt personality than his other daughter so they can talk about anything and Chinsun had learnt how to play basketball from him.

Siblings:  Yin Jinju | 16 | college student at Oxford University | alive/deceased | Jinju is a very sociable type of girl. She doesn’t belong to any “group” of people, but everyone knows her on the college campus. She’s a bubbly person that has a contagious laugh and smile, infamously known by her schoolmates as the “aegyo queen” due to her ability to do aegyo unintentionally. Although she seems innocent and naive, she’s actually quite intelligent, even without her skipping two grades. Jinju is also extremely competitive and has a stubborn streak in sports, hating to lose; she fights strongly for what she believes in and never backs down, but even when she knows she’s wrong, she’s too proud to admit defeat. | Despite her older sister feeling overshadowed  by Jinju’s achievements, Jinju and Chinsun are actually quite close. When Jinju is “unstable” or unable to be approached because of intimidation or inability to control her feelings, Chinsun or Saerom are able to comfort her the most. Jinju can’t cook in any way since she was too busy with her grades and physical education, so she had grown to admire Chinsun and her motherly ways, her older sister becoming her role model. Chinsun doesn’t know about this, though.

Other: Lee Saerom | grandmother | 70 | n/a | alive | Saeron is a kind hearted woman that any person would admire. She’s selfless, always ready to help and her ability to calm another person is incredibly well. She can see what most people don’t see and can always see the good in people. She’s optimistic in subtle way, where people can see it in her eyes or the supporting smile she shows you. She hates to ask for things, but won’t hesitate in giving things herself; she’s a bit of a pushover. | Her relationship is the to Chinsun is the closest in all of her family members. Being the person who raised her, she’s the closest to her, always telling her every problem. Saerom can tell if something’s on Chinsun’s mind and will always be able to tell what both her granddaughters’ will do even before they think of doing it.

Best Friends: Choi Sooyoung | 22 | member of SNSD | On camera, Sooyoung is the shikshin and is quite loud, but when it’s off, she’s more quiet, talking only when necessary. She’s a friendly person that can socialise with anyone and anywhere, polite around people when she first meets them. She has an air that is quiet, but a welcoming sort of way that makes her approachable. Sooyoung is a playful person that loves to joke around and hates awkward moments, which is why she’s incredibly good at bringing the mood up. | Being the closest of friends, Sooyoung and Chinsun are close and is a trickster when with her. The two laugh a lot because of each other’s jokes and Chinsun would tease Sooyoung because of her ual innuendo jokes. They share a great number of inside jokes and if they ever hear it from another person that says it unknowingly, the two look at each other and know what the other is thinking.

Friends: Kim 'Key' Kibum | 22 | member of SHINee | Often nicknamed as the "diva" or "umma" in his group, Key lives up to these names with his confident, direct, and motherly personality. He speaks his mind and isn't afraid to say what he needs to say; he's direct, temperamental, and often an overly-dramatic person that doesn't beat around the bush and hates when someone procrastinates or uses excuses. He goes to great lengths to help his loved ones and would do almost anything for them, unless he knows that their choice will lead them on the wrong path. | His relationship with Chinsun is close and consists of teasing and banter, similar to a sister and a brother - like a brother from another mother. Chinsun teases Key in English by calling him his much despised nickname "Key-Key," and intentionally annoying him by asking simple questions a five-year-old would ask.  Key respects Chinsun for her raw talent just as she does with him and does what he doesn't do with most people: he values her advice and words.

Rival: Park Sunyoung / Luna | 22 | member of f(x) | The rivalry of Luna and Chinsun is like the rivalry of Michael Phelp’s and Ryan Lochte’s rivalry: they’re both of the same team (SME) that are competing to be the absolute best. It’s a friendly sort of rivalry that share no bad feelings and sometimes are seen encouraging each other.

Trainee life:

It had started when Chinsun’s friend, a girl who did song covers and posted them on YouTube, convinced Chinsun to do a video that covered Mariah Carey’s “Hero.” It had gained 500,000 views and Lee Sooman of SME had caught wind of it and regarded her talent of singing. He had sent her an offer: to go to Seoul, the entire trip paid by SME, and go through the stage of an audition. Her grandmother encouraged Chinsun to go to Seoul with her on the annual vacation, but without her parents knowing that she was going to audition for SME. They had stayed in Chinsun’s aunt’s house in Seoul and her grandmother had chosen the Korean protest song “Morning Dew” as the song that Chinsun would sing.

She had arrived late to the audition due to the traffic, giving the judges a bad impression on her and even so with her wallflower appearance. But when she arrived and started to sing, they were interested by her song choice and stunned by the emotion in her powerful vocals. She had left and days later she had a callback in which they told her she had to dance to whatever song they put on for her. To her surprise, it was Bach’s Cello Suite Prelude - a song she had danced to in one of her ballet performances. Lee Sooman was there in both auditions, watching her with a critical eye and was impressed, seeing that she had potential with her raw talent. Afterwards, she had been accepted. During the time, she had gotten through the strict diets and the long hours of training, reminding herself that this was what she wanted even if she asked herself what she had gotten herself into during the first year of her training. She was a wallflower during her trainee years, usually only asked if they ever wanted something from them. She was put in as a background dancer for SNSD’s Sooyoung’s “If You Seek Amy,” Yuri’s “If,” and Super Junior’s Ryeowook’s “Moves Like Jagger.”

Love interest: Wu 'Kris' Yifan
Status: Single
How they met: They met during the trainee days when Kris had went to get his and his then-girlfriend’s order at Starbucks, but Chinsun had accidentally taken his girlfriend’s order because the two had the same thing. The thing was that Kris had asked the worker to put a note saying “you look cute when you smile” on his girlfriend’s order - Chinsun read it and blushed, confused. Later on in the day, Kris and Chinsun had the same dancing class and then Kris saw the order with the note in Chinsun’s hand as they left. He just laughed quietly.

How they interact: They interact with each other like cats and dogs. They bicker frequently, if not all the time, mimicking a married couple; he teases her, she counters back. These arguments sometimes happen in English so that not much people will understand what they’re saying and look at them weirdly. They are paired up together sometimes for performances and people would expect them to bicker, but they surprise them by doing the opposite - working together like gears in a clock and even producing something that makes it hard to look at away when the two perform together: chemistry.

Back-up love interest: Jung Yonghwa
