MOVIE RECOMMENDATION: Wonderful Radio

I've been a big fan of Korean movies ever since a guy friend of mine forced me to watch "My Sassy Girl" and since I'm kind of obsessive, I've seen a lot of Korean movies ever since from different genre. My fave though will always be Korean romantic comedies. I dunno, Koreans are really good with romcoms. It has been quite a long time though since I've seen a romcom I can say I really love. 'Wonderful Radio' has put an end to my romcom drought.

Honestly, I didn't even know this movie exists. I randomly clicked on this link my HS acquaintance posted on FB and I found myself clicking on links to Korean movies, most of them I've already watched. The movie description wasn't really attractive so I must say it was pure fate that led me to watch the movie.

According to WIKI the movie is about a has-been pop star who became a radio DJ (played by Lee Min Jung) struggling to boost listener ratings. When the show's producer leaves to have a baby, station manager Im  assigns the ambitious Lee Jae-hyeok (Lee Jung Jin) to her job with a brief to bring in some fresh ideas.

Their cat-mouse relationship unfurls in the beginning but then as the movie progresses, the story turns into something a bit unexpected. What is marketed to be a romcom actually talks not just about the romance between two individuals with polar opposite personalities but blooms into a multifaceted story than won't fail to tug at your heartstrings. I admit to shedding a few tears and that is to say something because I do not cry easily.

There's also a part where the female lead, Jinah, encounters a career bump that uncannily resembles what happened to Jiyong (or other artists/musicians you know of who has been involved in career threatening issues). There were several moments when I can't help but picture Ji going through what happened to Jinah in the movie (Jiyong=Jinah, can it be any more obvious?). It made me appreciate more how YGEnt saw Jiyong through all the scandals he's been involved with. You really have to watch it to know what I'm talking about.

Anyways, I really love the movie because for one, becoming a DJ is one of my fantasies. Also, the movie features several tracks that introduced me to other Korean musicians outside of the idolsphere. Try checking out Lee Seung Hwan and his company dreamfactory. They got really good music, if you want to try the not so pop-ish variety. Also, the really tall guy from Running Man Lee Kwang Soo (I can't believe the guy is younger than me, lol) is in the movie. He's soooo funny! Jong Kook and Gary (Running Man) also did cameos for the movie.

All in all, I highly recommend 'Wonderful Radio'. Great story, good music and a really sumptous food for the soul.

If you get to watch the movie, I'd love to know what you think about it. ENJOY!!!
