K-Pop Fans: Why We Stand United

I love watching my dash just EXPLODE with ELF's who are waiting on baited breath for 5JIB; this is my first time getting to see a Super Junior comeback and I have not been disappointed at all. I know some people look at their outfits and are like "WTF?" But I think they're effing BRILLIANT and I am literally getting butterflies thinking about their music video and what it could possibly be like!

It's so hard to explain this excitement to someone who isn't a fan...really of K-Pop in general. When any artist has a comeback, there is this undercurrent that runs through them all; the same feeling of “OMG” and it’s like getting an electric shock every time you think about it. All you want to do is scream and grab something soft and just squeeze it, because you can’t hug the idols and you need some kind of outlet for all the love and excitement that’s bubbling inside you. I feel like for international fans, we have the excuse of distance…they live so far away from us and since we can’t be there for them all the time, holding signs with our hearts poured out on them and screaming our biases names at the concerts, we feel like the least we can do is go absolutely nuts for them. As if somehow, our overzealous screaming and flapping of arms/hands will reach them in South Korea and they will be able to feel our love and pride.

We may never see them in concert, or shake their hands, or get to tell them face to face how much they mean to us, but for all of us, they are always “Ours.” “Our boys”, “Our girls”, and even though we aren’t dating them or personal friends, each of us has this sense that they are “our.” We aren’t being selfish, but there’s just so much love and pride that…well how could they be anything but “ours?”

And maybe our friends and parents and siblings shake their heads and wonder how people so far away who we’ve maybe never met could be so important. Maybe we ourselves can’t even pinpoint why we love them so much, why we are so proud and excited for them, but that’s okay. All that matters is that you continue to stand with them, through the sometimes strange outfits, odd hair colors, voice cracks, controversial dance moves, lyric bans, lawsuits and – yes- even the occasional break. Because in the end, they’ll never stop loving YOU. You- the fan; they’ve done it all for you.

And the least we can do is love them just as unconditionally as they love us.
