Psychology 101

Hello everyone...! I want to write a blog, but it isn’t like an usual blog. It’s more like a review of what I had learned through my first year at universitiy. I take Psychology as my major, and as you (maybe) know I’m in holiday. It’s a very long one (the new semester starts on August), so I’m afraid to forget the lesson. This blog will mainly about Psychology, and I think it’ll surprise you because the psychology you know probably mostly about handling psycho people, self-help book, or motivation seminar which not very clear how the person do it. So first, I’ll break this mindset and tell you what is the real psychology.

Souce : Pscyhology by Carole Wade and Carol Tavris

What is psychology? If you got a question like this maybe you will remember books that placed in psychology section in a bookstore, which is :

·         Psychology discuss everything that connect to happiness. Psychology will tell you Why you live an unhappy life and What can you do for your life, as long you read I don’t have to make everything better. Even if you think you can’t do anything about your life, you might be entertained to find The joy in failure or Happy, Whatever happen.

·         Psychology will enrich you and make you success if you read Small steps to success and How to make the impossible happen.

·         Psychology will help you to fall in love, keep loving, and letting someone you love. Love is the answer, but if only you can Loving yourself first and not developing Possesive Love.

It’s not 100% wrong, but the real psychology have minimum conection with popular psychology which is commonly found. Real psychology (which I learn) is more complex, more informative, and more helpful because based on scientific research and empirical fact. Psychology comes from greek word psi (Ψ) means spirit or soul, combined with logos, the etymology definition is science of mental processes. Right now, the correct definition of general psychology is science which focuses on behavior and mental processes and how this behavior and mental processes are affected by organism mental condition and external environment.

In recent decades, society’s thirst for psychology have created a field for psychobabble (the way we call popular psychology), pseudoscience (coverage of psychological problems that not right and not scientific), and people who pretend knows psychology and using psychological term. For example how to handle unhappy life, improving kid’s IQ by listening to Mozart, or ‘reprogramming’ your brain so you can be more creative. There are also electronical tools which promises to make both of your brain’s side work optimal : the Graham Potentializer, the Tranquilite, the Floatarium, and so on. Also in the internet, there are many application like IQ Test, Perfect Love Live, and so on, which make it seem very easy, just click the button.

This age many popular psychology’s idea have penetrated public’s opinion, mass media, education, laws, and even tv show (Criminal Minds (personally I love to watch this. Maybe I’ll take criminology as my minor. It’s just not that’s easy to do it like the movie shows), Lie to Me, Laws and Order), so we have to make clear distinction from psychobabble and real psychology. As I’ve said before real psychology is based on empirical fact and scientific research, and this is the important key to know which one is true or fake. Another important different is pscyhobabble confirms for opinion that exist in people’s mind (ex: PMS makes girls more sensitive and easy to angry. IT’S NOT TRUE!!!), but psychology questions this opinion.

How is it? Boring? Kekeke... Aaaah... I really miss to study in class!!! You can request anything about psychology that you want to know, I’ll try to write about it. It can be any subject maybe about diet, mental hygiene, why K-Pop so likeable this day (oh yeah! Psychology discuss about that too!!), or maybe you have someone you know have an mental illness. Feel free to request...
