• Shy: Eli has always been a relatively shy girl. During her childhood, she never socialised much with any other children her age, as she would keep to herself and read. She had very few friends until high school, but for Eli it was enough to get by on.

 

• Independent: Due to her childhood, Eli has had to learn to cope independently. Now, she insists on doing things by herself. She doesn’t enjoy when someone helps her with something she can do easily by herself, but she will never say anything.

 

• Innocent: Eli doesn’t know anything bad or dirty. Despite the mass of it that circulated around her school, she still doesn’t know any. She rarely uses swears.

Background:

 

       Eli was born in Seoul on August 5th 1992. She was born to loving parents, but after her birth, they weren’t so anymore. A few years after, when she was about 4, Eli’s mother fell seriously ill. Her illness was confirmed as a severe case of influenza, which then later became a deadly case of pneumonia. Eli’s mother should have recovered with medical treatment, as she was neither very young, nor very old, but her immune system was already shot from her childhood, when she was in hospital all the time.

 

        When Eli was 6, she realised two things; her mother's situation, and the fact her father had to work too much to be home to look after her mother, so she began taking care of her. Since her mother was bedridden, and refused to go to any hospital on account of Eli, Eli herself chose to look after her. She learned to make her mother's breakfast, she organised any pills she needed, and did all the chores around the house. At 8 years old, Eli had developed a usual daily routine, and even though she was in school by then she still always had time for her mother.

 

          Eli developed a love for music and the arts around the age of 10, and taught herself to play the guitar until the age of 12. On her 12th birthday, she received probably the worst 'present' possible. Her mother had died that morning. Eli didn't know what to do. Her musical interest sparked then, and she wrote a song for her mother entitled 'Cheonsa', meaning Angel. She sang it at her mother's funeral a few months later.

 

          Eli ended up living alone for 2 years, and had to tend to herself as per usual. She missed tending to her mother too. She kept herself going with a simple routine every morning, and always got to school on time. After the second year, her grandmother Hyunmi arrived to pick her up. From then on, she lived with her grandmother and grandfather. Having learned nothing else, she spent the majority of her life there cleaning, cooking, organising, and when she had free time, playing her guitar, listening to music and reading.

 

        When Eli was in high school, she made a few friends. She met Shim Yejun, a happy-go-lucky guy with a cute face, and energetic personality, and Suzy Bae, a sweet, charming girl who was not at all shy, especially in comparison to Eli. She would spend her time at school with either one of them, as they both had their own cliques. She enjoyed the majority of her high school life.

 

        She got a job working in her grandparents’ café when she was 17, and continued to work there up until she was 19. She still currently works there on a Saturday.

Choi Hyunmi | 71 | Grandmother | Sweet, kind and very sensitive | Eli is very obedient and grateful towards Hyunmi for taking her in. They both treat one another with respect, and Hyunmi does her best to be a mother-like figure for Eli.

Usually, she’s very kind to everyone. | She is very close to Eli, so they act very well together. They spend a lot of time together, even with Yejun whenever possible.
