Make it personal
To make writing sensational, the author said, "Make it personal." We should not just write what is expected of us like most do nowadays. We should tell our stories - our experiences or that of people we know - not present or state details.
Each of us has stories to tell - stories that can move people's hearts and inspire people; stories that would not be forgotten; stories that are alive.
How do we do that in fanfiction?
I don't know if I am even doing it correctly. But instead of imagining scenarios, write what you know, what you or a friend experienced. My characters are inspired by real people and some scenes are based on real life. (Hence, I only should be writing friendship fics like CRN3).
I hope my explanation is clear enough ^^
