Pay It Forward

I've been thinking about the different influences on society. Like what does society mostly respond to from movies or from TV shows. I thought about '16 and pregnant' or '2012' but those didn't really stick to well with me. But then I thought of Pay It Forward a movie about a kid that came up with balance of sorts to help people try and be more kind to one another. In the picture there is a demonstration that shows the boy drawing out the whole" pay it forward" concept. Basically what it is, is you do something significantly helpful for three people without asking or expecting anything in return. Then they will do the same thing with three more people. So it total from your three people it ends up being twelve people including your original three. This process goes on and on and basically never stops.
The key is to not ask or accept anything in return but instead of repaying you they pay it forward to someone else. It's kind of like your repaying the person that helped you by doing something helpful for someone else. Eventually this may become a habit and you just naturally want to help people. I'm not very sure on that part but that is what I have observed. I asked some people if they have ever heard of this movie and some have said yes but most have said no. At first I didn't quite understand the whole concept of this pay it forward plan. But then I had to put myself in the boy’s shoes. So I said " ok so if someone needed advise to start their future and I had helped start finding colleges and other things of that nature I would just do it and not worry about the "what’s in it for me" mindset I see everywhere. And then the people I helped would do the same thing and so on and so on. With the small city that I live in we might eventually make a full circle!"
With that mentality another thought dawned on me why do we have that “what’s in it for me" mindset? Why can't we just be nice and do something nice of others without being so selfish? Personally I think it's because many people have become scared. Scared of things or people they don't know so they simply throw it out of their minds and say good riddens. Perhaps it’s not the element of fear but the problem of laziness? Are we just too lazy to help someone with their groceries? Now I'm not saying that, that is the only thing to help out with that’s just an example. I have seen the positive effects of the notion first hand and I must say it is inspiring. So why not try it? You have nothing to lose by it and it may change your life in a great way! You are a part of society so what do you think?
