Personality

Background: When Sung-bae was eleven years old, his teachers suddenly discovered something about the short and silent boy who sat in the back of their classes. He was a prodigy. They immediately pushed Sung-bae to take several difficult exams which he passed with ease and showcased his over 180 IQ. His teachers then skipped him ahead three grades due to Sung-bae’s uncanny level of intelligence.

Due to his young age, Sung-bae’s classmates chose to ignore him. They never bullied him as Sung-bae was highly prized by all the teachers in the school as their “star student” but instead avoided him and refused to speak. Those who did wanted to gain favors or ask Sung-bae to do their homework for them or whatever. This continued all the way through Sung-bae’s middle school years and even through high school which led the already quiet boy to become cold and unresponsive toward the rest of the world.

Sung-bae’s teachers all loved him. They flattered him and gave him favors such as skipping class or eating in the Teacher’s Lounge. However, none of them saw fit to see past Sung-bae’s grades to his actual personality. Sung-bae secretly loathed all of his teachers and saw them as fools who had nothing better to do than praise a child.

His parents were significantly worse than his teachers. Before Sung-bae’s abilities were discovered, his parents had thought that Sung-bae was an introverted child and didn’t force him to do anything he didn’t want to do. After the school informed them of their discoveries, it’s safe to say that Sung-bae’s parents went mad. They began to force Sung-bae to read and study at the table, soon making him skip meals in favor of homework. Entering him into various academic competitions to win money, his parents failed to notice the stress that this placed upon Sung-bae. He hated the fact that his own parents only saw him as an object to show off or use to win prizes. He hated the fact that no one accepted him just because he was different. He hated everything. Sung-bae didn’t exactly hate life, but he despised the people around him and became quiet and withdrawn.

Description: Sung-bae is what people would call a genius. He's extremely smart and able to pick up on things quickly. Ever since middle school, Sung-bae has been placed into advanced classes and even skipped a few grades. He's not exactly the type to flaunt his intelligence, but Sung-bae knows that he's smart and doesn't hesitate in pointing out errors others make or informing them of his over 180 IQ.

Unfortunately, Sung-bae's crazy level of intelligence led him to be alienated by his classmates. Most, intimidated by his sharp eyes and young age, preferred to stay away from him and leave him alone. Others attempted to up to him which led Sung-bae to believe that true friendship was something unattainable for someone like himself.

Sung-bae thinks logically and is able to see any situation clearly, but without emotion. He's a bit of a robot that is unable to respond when asked to judge something emotionally. Sung-bae has never been quite able to grasp concepts like love or such.

Sung-bae hardly gets angry but chooses to remain blank and unsociable. The only times he truly expresses emotions are when other people fail to understand what he talks about, and thus Sung-bae becomes extremely frustrated. Other times, he grows infuriated when people tell him that he's too cold or that he needs to open up. Somewhere inside of him, Sung-bae truly wishes to be able to feel what others feel and their emotions, but another stronger part wants to ignore that urge and continue living like he has been.

Despite his apparent arrogance, Sung-bae truly likes to teach other people. He really enjoys watching his students improve at whatever it was they needed to be taught, and Sung-bae would have wanted to be a teacher/professor if not going into the entertainment world.

Likes: Studying, learning new things, animals, reading newspaper articles

Dislikes: “Unnecessary” human contact, being ignored, coffee, going outside

Habits: rubbing his chin when thinking, hitting himself when annoyed, cracking his knuckles

Hobbies: playing the flute, playing soccer

Trivia: Sung-bae is fond of playing the flute and soccer because the two are things that are difficult for him. The flute requires a lot of precision in controlling your breathing and remembering various s, so it’s a complex instrument that Sung-bae regards as a close “friend” for some reason. Soccer is physically strenuous, so although Sung-bae is quite horrible at it, he likes playing it. He also refuses to admit that he likes to play soccer though.

Relationships

Family Members:

Kim Bong-cha | Father | Sung-min used to care for Sung-bae’s feelings by respecting his personal boundaries, but now he’s turned into a money-thirsting father. Safe to say, though, he’s the less demanding of the parents. Sung-min loves Sung-bae but is too scared of his wife to do anything.

Kim Han-ah | Mother | Han-ah had a strenuous relationship with Sung-bae from the start. When Han-ah was pregnant with Sung-bae, she fell violently ill, and Sung-bae’s birth was really difficult. Because of this, Han-ah always harbored some ill feelings for her eldest son. Once Sung-bae’s genius was discovered, she saw a way to both show her annoyance with him and gain some profit. Therefore, the loathing goes both ways for this mother-son pair.

Kim Sung-min | Younger Brother | Sung-min is Sung-bae’s younger brother by three years. He was always looked down upon by others due to his older brother’s intelligence. Teachers disapproved of his average grades, so Sung-min found comfort in the classmates who despised his older brother. Sung-bae never helped their relationship by ignoring his younger brother for the most part, but the two are both too stubborn to reconcile properly.

Friends: Kim Kibum (Key) | SHINee | Key and Sung-bae have a bit of a love-hate relationship. Key is never impressed by Sung-bae’s witty remarks or high IQ and constantly puts him down instead. Sung-bae called Key a “transgender freak” and “no-brain diva” but the two have a good relationship. Key acts like a barrier to stop Sung-bae’s negativity and arrogance. When Sung-bae is with Key, he feels that he doesn’t need to impress him since Key is hardly ever impressed. Therefore, the two are often seen talking with one another even if they don’t seem like good friends.

Love Interest 1: Yong Junhyung | Beast | Who would have expected Sung-bae to fall for Beast’s badass rapper? Not him, certainly. When he first met Junhyung during one of Beast’s concerts, Sung-bae thought that Junhyung was an idiot while Junhyun was taken aback by the harsh words of the cold Sung-bae. However, as time passed, the two began to call one another and meet up for café “dates” or movies. The soft side of Junhyung was something Sung-bae prized only himself to see, and for some reason, he always feels inexplicably nervous whenever he has to go out with Junhyung. Is it love? Nah, no way.

love Interest 2: None

Extra

Comments or questions? Leave them here: I’d prefer it if Sung-bae didn’t end up with someone from the group and instead grows to see them as brothers. He also hates talking about his family and hates his family, so Sung-bae won’t bring that up himself. He considers himself too good to use violence and likes to use logic instead, saying that fighting is “plebian.” If Sung-bae doesn’t end up with Junhyung, you can pair him up with another idol instead or no one at all. AS for Sung-bae’s gayness, he only said that to rebel against his family who seemed to think that he was the perfect money making machine. Sung-bae honestly couldn’t care less about other people’s opinions of him, but he occasionally feels guilty if he hurts someone. Sung-bae really is gay but he just hasn’t realized that yet since he hasn’t fallen in love yet.
