Personality*: ChaeYul isn’t good at making a strong first impression. She’s shy and quiet, only talking when asked a question. Because ChaeYul’s dream is to become a singer, overtime she’s become used to meeting 2 or 3 new people at a time, but if she’s suddenly faced with a big group of strangers, she will become very shy and blush when talking.However, once you get to know her and become friends, ChaeYul will become a cool, cute, talkative lump of aegyo. She’ll be easy-going and open with you; for example, if you come over to her house, she won’t jump around all over the place dressing up and cleaning her room, but just share her real looks with you. Although, ChaeYul is very organized and clean, so her room wouldn’t need to be cleaned much. She feels that she can’t concentrate on anything if her environment is messy and it has almost become a habit to keep her space tidy. The only time her room could be messy is when ChaeYul is so focused on one thing that nothing else registers in her mind properly. When she is focused, it is very hard to get her attention – this also makes her a bad multi-tasker. When ChaeYul wants something so badly but she gets a ‘no’, she’ll try again and again with her aegyo. Unless you have seen it a million times and have gotten immune, this killer-aegyo of hers will get her anything. But this aegyo is quite rare as ChaeYul doesn’t like to make herself a bother to others and usually stops when someone says ‘no’. The aegyo will only come out when she really badly wants something. Also, ChaeYul is very considerate of others and has a lot of manners. She always tries to keep a positive mindset for everything, tries to always smile and not cry. Because she doesn’t want to cry, she often ends up bottling up all her negative feelings (that can sometimes make her ill), but when she feels she needs to let her tears out, she will do it when she is all alone. ChaeYul feels that showing tears is showing that she is weak. ChaeYul is very honest; she keeps her promises and never lies. If it needs be, she might not tell something, but never lies. ChaeYul is good at making somewhat negative comments such as ‘That dress doesn’t suit you’ sound like a positive comment by rephrasing it the ChaeYul-way: ‘I think that dress on that hanger is prettier! You should try that one on before choosing’.

Background / History*: In 2002, ChaeYul and her Mum moved to New Zealand, with her Dad following a few months later (he had work to take care of before coming). She lived there for 6 years and became very fluent in English (so she isn’t as fluent in Korean and finds it hard to understand elders talking because of the hard vocab). Luckily, ChaeYul didn’t experience any sort of racism or bullying at schools and made many good friendships to last.

 

In 2006, ChaeYul’s family visited Korea for the first time since leaving to New Zealand. Because of that trip, ChaeYul is now on not-so-good terms with her grandmother (Dad’s mother). From the start, ChaeYul’s grandmother had disagreed and refused on ChaeYul’s mother and father’s marriage. When ChaeYul was born, she had become more relaxed, but when they told her they would be moving to New Zealand, she became quite hateful towards her mother again. So in 2006, when they visited, she heard her grandmother tell her Dad that he should have a divorce. ChaeYul was meant to be asleep and her Mum had already fallen asleep. ChaeYul, angry and upset, came out of the room and stared tearfully at both her grandmother and Dad to let them know that she had heard and then returned to her mother’s side where she cried silently in pain. ChaeYul got a very big shock at her grandmother that day and somewhat began to hate her, although she knows she can’t hate her as she is her family.

 

In 2007, another shock followed when ChaeYul’s father received a letter from Korea saying that his real parents have turned up. This was a shock for all of ChaeYul’s family – even Dad – as no-one had known he had grown up in a foster family. Luckily, this event ended good: ChaeYul’s father met his real family (who had abandoned him because of the hard conditions they were living in) and his foster parents had come clean about it too.

 

In 2008, ChaeYul and her mother revisited Korea (her father couldn’t come because of work) and kept the trip a secret from ChaeYul’s father’s side of the family with Dad’s permission. Since ChaeYul was already talented in singing – thanks to her Mum being a vocal trainer and ChaeYul just being naturally talented – she decided to take dance lessons to help her in achieving her dream of becoming a singer or an idol. After dance class, she was walking to where her Aunty was waiting to pick her up, when someone stated they were from SM Entertainment and told her that he would like to cast her for SME. He gave her his name card and said she should contact SME after talking about it with her parents. Fortunately, her Mum was very happy that ChaeYul’s talents would get noticed and her Dad was happy for her to go to SME too. After a quick audition to see what skills ChaeYul had, she was immediately casted into SME for her amazing voice and although her dancing wasn’t perfect, it was good.ChaeYul’s family moved back to Korea.

Reason for rivalry: Through SoHyun, ChaeYul got to meet JiYoon. ChaeYul really looks up to JiYoon because of her powerful vocals, and JiYoon complimented ChaeYul’s voice and set a challenge for her: to become recognized in the K-pop industry and catch up to 4Minute. Get a compliment that compares ChaeYul with JiYoon. ChaeYul asks that if she could sing a duet with her as a reward when she accomplishes this challenge and she says okay. So it’s more of a friendly rivalry, a challenge to make ChaeYul a better vocal.

TaeMin gives hints that he has feelings for ChaeYul too, but ChaeYul is usually too busy trying to calm her heart to get the hints.

1/ ChaeYul was walking towards her practice room (where SME films the dances with the sky background) when she sees TaeMin dancing through the slightly open door. She gets mesmerized by him and ends up going right up against the door. She accidentally loses balance and falls into the room and TaeMin sees her. She apologizes, bows and almost runs out of the room while TaeMin just thinks she is cute. Another time, TaeMin hears ChaeYul practicing singing and gets mesmerized by that.

2/ ChaeYul is on the phone with ChaeHo (maybe she could be in her practice room), talking about how she feels around and about TaeMin. TaeMin overhears the conversation and is happy because he always thought ChaeYul had feelings for him but now he knows for sure.
