Living Life #23 - May 31: The Clothes (Part 3)

You say you trust God, but really, do you?

You only really find out when God throws another obstacle at you...

Yet, know that indeed it's never too late, and start believing today.

He was always there.

You were.

You was.

You will be always be.

The Clothes (Part 3) - Exodus 28:31-43

The Robe

31: "Make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth,"

32: "with an opening for the head in its center. There shall be a woven edge like a collar around this opening, so that it will not tear."

33: "Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn around the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them."

34: "The gold bells and the pomegranates are to alternate around the hem of the robe."

35: "Aaron must wear it when he ministers. The sound of the bells will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the LORD and when he comes out, so that he will not die."

The Tunic, Turban, and Sash

36: "Make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD."

37: "Fasten a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban; it is to be on the front of the turban."

38: "It will be on Aaron's forehead, and he will bear the guilt involved in the sacred gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their gifts may be. It will be on Aaron's forehead continually so that they will be acceptable to the LORD."

39: "Weave the tunic of fine linen and make the turban of fine linen. The sash is to be the work of an embroiderer."

40: "Make tunics, sashes, and caps for Aaron's sons to give them dignity and honor."

41: "After you put these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they may serve me as priests."

42: 'Make linen undergarments as a covering for the body, reaching from the waist to the thigh."

43: "Aaron andhis sons must wear them whenever they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants."

Reflection

The Robe (28:31-35)

We continue with the requirements of the priestly regalia. The description of the priest's robe is similar to that of the fabrics and colors of the tabernacle. Why so much attention to detail in the attire of a priest? It is not so much a display for God as it is a reminder to the priests and the people. The essence of prayer is not what we say to God, but what He says to us. Aaron's outfit is not meant to remind God of how the Israelites feel, but to remind them of how God feels about them. When Aaron brings the names of the twelve tribes before the Lord, God wants Aaron to understand His sentiments for His people. That is what intercession is all about. Prayer is not the believer moving the heart of God, but God moving our hearts. God speaks mroe to us in prayer than we speak to Him.

The Tunic, Turban, and Sash (28:36-43)

Another significant part of the priestly outfit is the golden plate with the inscription: "HOLY TO THE LORD," which is attached to Aaron's turban by blue cords. Aaron is to wear these words on his forehead as he enters the sanctuary. This is an important reminder to him that he is holy - set apart for the Lord's service. The plate symbolically protects his mind and intellect. This suggests that our relationship with God does not annul our brains. Faith and intelligence are not incompatible. God is the source of all intelligence.

Verse 39 and on deal with the tunic, turban, and sash. The Apostle John saw Jesus dressed in this basic outfit in a vision in Revelation 1:13: "And among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest." Jesus is the Great High Priest who gave His life for our sake.

Application

-Although church attire has become less formal throughout the years, what you wear to worship reflect what you think about worship. What is your attitude in worship? Would you dress the same if you were to meet the president of your country?

-Remember that you are now a part of royal priesthood. God calls us to be holy, different, and set apart. Does your life reflect God's holiness? Remember to feed your intellect with godly thoughts.

God Labels Us

Labels are very useful. They are a form of identification. They can tell us the identity, the contents, or even the owner of an object. Furthermore, labels help us distinguish between what we need, what we want, and what we prefer. However, labels on people are a different story. Most people do not like to be labeled. When we are labeled by others, we often feel discriminated against. Labels, after all, come with judgments. But the truth is that we will all be judged by God one day, and so He has labeled us. As it so happens, God labels the things that are His.

In Exodus 28:36-38, we see that Aaron was labeled as "HOLY TO THE LORD" so that he might be continually acceptable before God. Only by that symbolic seal, was Aaron holy before God. As Octavius Winslow writes, "Sin taints, impurity mars, imperfection traces, all we do for God...How expressive is the typical teaching of this truth - referring to the mitre on the head of Aaron the priest...Thus Christ, our true Aaron, puts away the iniquity of our holy things b the cleansing of His precious blood."

Aaron's label had to be wrapped around His head with a cord, and so it demonstrated that through the Old Covenant, Israel's atonement for sins came through temporary measures. But through the New Covenant, we see that just as Jesus' blood proved to be the permanent atonement, so is God's name permanently on our foreheads in Heaven (Rev. 22:4). By Jesus' blood, we are eternally God's.
