Worship of God - Exodus 20:1-11

Ten Commandments Part 1

1: "And God spoke all these words:"

2: "'I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt [a once very terrible place for His people], out of the land of slavery.'"

3: "'You shall have no other gods before me.'"

4: "'You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in Heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.'"

5: "'You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,'"

6: "'but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.'"

7: "'You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.'"

Sabbath Day Rest

8: "'Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy.'"

9: "'Six days you shall labor and do all your work,'"

10: "'but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servan, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.'"

[Do all your work from Mon.-Sat. so that you may rest on Sunday and honor God and thank Him for His creations ^^]

11: "'For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.'"

Reflection

Ten Commandments Part 1 (20:1-7)

As the Israelites stand before Mount Sinai, they hear the very voice of God giving them the Law. These are the stipulations which are to outline and govern Israel's covenant [promise] relationship with God, representing the key requirements that God demands of His people. Israel is to be single-minded in their devotion to Yahweh [God] who delivered them from Egypt (v.2). Israel is to obey these commands out of love for God (v.6) and in worship to God alone. They are to ensure that no visible representation of God is formed by human hands, and are to take utmost caution in verbal representations of their God.

Sabbath Day Rest (20:8-11)

The fourth command requires Israel to refrain from work on the Sabbath, the seventh day. Today, while the other nine commandments are accepted, the issue of Sabbath Day observance is often questioned. Some hold that with Christ's completed work, the Sabbath Day is to be observed on the Lord's Day (Sunday) instead of the Sabbath (Saturday). The other view is that the Sabbath Day observance has been fulfilled by the death and resurrection of Jesus, and that the Lord's Day, a new day with its own special characteristics, has replaced the Sabbath. The overall of the New Testament seems to suggest that the Lord's Day has replaced the Sabbath. There is no example of the church meeting on the Sabbath or observing the Sabbath, and when a day is mentioned, it is called the Lord's Day, and refers to a Sunday.

Application

-The first three commandments remind us that we ought to be careful to worship only the true God, in a way that is pleasing to Him.

-Whle the issue of Sabbath Day observance or otherwise is not a core point of the Gospel, we ought to hold a deliberate and thought-out position, but also be careful not to enforce our view on our brothers and sisters in Christ.

A Letter to God

God, thank You for the commandments You have given us, especially in guiding us to know You and worship You alone.

Help us to stay true to You. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.
