Background | Lan's mother is a Vietnamese woman named Bui Hoa who "immigrated" to South Korea when she twenty-two years old. Hoa had in fact been working as an undercover spy for South Korea for the past two years, and had recently returned to the country after she was tested positive for cancer. Hoa was checked into Asan Medical Center, where she was treated for her cancer and where she met her future husband. One of the doctors who treated Hoa, Song Min Ho, ended up becoming very close with her and, when Hoa's cancer was declared to now be benign the two married the day after she was let out of the hospital. Three months later they had a beautiful baby girl, who they named Lan. The happiness was not meant to last, though, and Hoa died just one month shy of Lan's sixth birthday after the cancer once more took hold of her. Min Ho did not lose himself to despair, however, and instead continued to raise Lan as bravely as he could manage.

 

Growing up, Lan was never the most popular student at any of her schools. Besides being the one you went to for studying help, Lan was pretty much a nobody and as such was ignored. This was inconsequential to Lan, however, as she wasn't particularly concerned with associating herself with other people. Instead, she focused on developing her own personal skills in order to get into a good university. When Lan was eighteen she took the university entrance exams for several schools and achieved miraculously high scores on all of them, which Lan attributed to her ability to literally memorize entire passages of information and then recall them word for word during the test. One of the teachers at Fiction High, and a close friend of previous student Bui Hoa, had his attention sparked by Lan's high scores and, believing that she had inherited some of her mother's abilities, brought Lan to study at Fiction High. Min Ho had no idea about his wife's past, and so Lan was not allowed to tell him about her new life, either. He now believes that she got into a foreign school and is studying in the states.

personality | Lan lives mostly in her own brain, where she can confidentally analyze difficult problems, identify patterns, and come up with logical explanations. Sometimes she will feel personally responsible for being a "teacher" to those around her, and will explain how she came to her solution even if it isn't a very appropriate time for such a thing. She is extremely good at cracking codes or solving other such problems because of her determination to ignore the set rules and find a solution by her own way, which is often just the unique method needed for the situation. Although she is good at finding the how, her ability to put her solutions into effect is definitely lacking, and thus she is often staying in the background and providing assistance for others rather than getting in the field herself.

 

Lan does not like to lead or control people, and when put into a situation where she must do this she will usually freeze up and crack under the pressure. When meeting new people Lan is very shy and will often hide inside her own head, but when around those she knows well, or when discussing theories she fully understands, she becomes self-confident and gregarious. Lan does not make her decisions through personal feelings. She strives to use logic to explain things, and honestly doesn't understand the importance or relevance of applying emotions to decisions. Due to this, she isn't in-tune with the feelings of others and doesn't know how to meet the emotional needs of others. She does feel love for others, though, and this affection is almost child-like in its purity.
