BONHWA

bonhwa : glorious bastard extraordinaire

I'M TOUCHING THE SUN

BIRTHNAME SIM BONHWA

NICKNAMES

MONSTER TRAINEE never used directly to him, but a nickname Bonhwa was referred to as during his trainee period under MAX Entertainment. He was known as the biggest threat in the building, a trainee that could do just about anything and had the drive to do it.

SHIMBA 심바 nickname given to him by international fans while he was on UNDER NINETEEN, coming from sim and the lion simba. It was supposed to be cute and endearing but then it developed into the new form...

SHIMBO 심보 coming from sim and himbo, simbo was what his 'cute' nickname from fans evolved into when they realized he was in fact a himbo.

GOMDORI 곰돌이 the nickname was started by other members of 1THE9 who called him their cute bear. It was later picked up by fans and continued to spread, much to Bonhwa's chagrin.

BIRTHDATE May 5, 2002

BIRTHPLACE Seoul, South Korea

HOMETOWN Seoul, South Korea

ETHNICITY Korean

NATIONALITY Korean

LANGUAGES

KOREAN native language

ENGLISH started learning English when he was in school, but furthered his study due to an interest in foreign language. Bonhwa is  mostly fluent  and though he does have a mild accent, he's rather comfortable communicating with his fans and foreign members in English.

FACECLAIM Jahan, KINGDOM

BACKUP FACECLAIM Leon, TRENDZ

HEIGHT 169 cms

WEIGHT 63 kgs

APPEARANCE With a side profile that could kill God and absolutely no height to his name, Bonhwa might not possess the typical 'idol visuals', but he doesn't need them to catch eyes and keep them. He's darker-skinned than a lot of the other members of DGDG and has sharp, dark eyes that seem particularly piercing whenever Bonhwa's resting face is out in full force. He has only one piercing in the lobe of each ear and intends to keep it that way.

With an artistic nose and downturned lips, thick brows and an intimidating aura despite being a short , Bonhwa is a presence in DGDG, even if a quiet one. He's muscular, spending time in the gym every day without fail, and known for being one of the stronger (if not the strongest) members of the group. He might look small at times because of his shortness and baggy clothes, but make no mistake, he's really a big boy.

STYLE Bonhwa prioritizes comfort over fashion always. His general go-tos are skinny jeans on the looser side, sweats, joggers, loose t-shirts and sweaters or hoodies paired with bucket hats and slip on shoes or sneakers. He's more on the conservative side (in terms of how he dresses) and doesn't show a lot of skin save for the occasional gym selfie where he pulls up his shirtsleeve to flex and terrorize his fans.

THE SUN    What is there that can be said about Sim Bonhwa?

Carrying himself with a confidence born of his own determination, Bonhwa is the type of person who rather embodies the phrase when the going gets tough, the tough get going. He doesn't quit, he doesn't slow down, and he certainly doesn't let anyone or anything stand in his way. He tackles obstacles as they come without allowing them to get under his skin, choosing to face his issues with a clear head and solve his problems with logic rather than emotion. His spirit is nigh impossible to beat down, much like his obstinate nature which can also rear its head in trying situations.

He doesn't struggle when it comes to making decisions—again, Bonhwa is prone to using logic to determine the best course of action, and rarely wastes his time agonizing over which choice to make. He doesn't wallow and worry if he's made the right decision, eiher, choosing instead to let time tell. With a good head on his shoulders, Bonhwa often makes good choices, though not all the time; at the end of the day, he has a human with the capacity to make mistakes, often of the emotional variety. Not all things can be ruled by logic, as Bonhwa is prone to rely on.

Although he often lacks the ability to express his own emotion and respond properly to the feelings of others, Bonhwa does his best to be just and has a strong moral code. He isn't the type of man who stands for any kind of mistreatment of others, and will step in if he believes someone is being treated poorly. Though not prone to anger or aggression, Bonhwa can be quite firm when defending someone else from mistreatment, and he has no fear of calling out inappropriate behavior—even if it comes from his own fans.

Routines and organization are important to Bonhwa, as is personal control. He keeps a rein on his emotions, uncomfortable with letting them slip out of his control. He's very disciplined, maintaining a steady schedule, routine and lifestyle despite the struggles that come with it. He doesn't allow his feelings to come between himself and his disciplined nature, even when perhaps they should; Bonhwa doesn't skip gym day or forget to hit the studio for extra training whenever he feels like he needs it, but he also doesn't allow himself a moment to slow down and process his emotions. However, he feels like that's a small price to pay in order to keep things running smoothly, like a well-oiled machine.

(Bonhwa is not, in fact, a machine.)

Given all of his tendencies, perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that Bonhwa isn't a creature prone to rash behavior. Although he can often come to decisions quickly, Bonhwa is careful about his actions—those that can impact his career and those that can impact his personal life equally. When he speaks, he often seems to pause to think on what he's going to say next, often looking for the right words so as not to speak out of context. It can't be said that he's self-aware or emotionally adept enough, however, to know how to avoid hurting feelings with his words or actions.

THE STARS    Although not the leader of DGDG, Bonhwa has a tendency to fall into a role of leadership naturally. As someone adept at thinking on the fly and with a responsible streak, Bonhwa is a good choice for a team leader or a leader when the leader's away. While he is glad that he's not the leader and that responsibility doesn't rest on his shoulders, Bonhwa wouldn't shy away from it either.

Although he is a presence, Bonhwa isn't a particularly loud presence. He's comfortable being a quieter figure amid the undoubted chaos of DGDG, contributing when necessary and otherwise prone to being milder than his companions. This frequent quiet makes it all the more alarming whenever something happens that does make Bonhwa react or behave loudly, much to the amusement of members and fans alike. He does have a flair for well-timed quips and throwing jokes that land as they're intended, as his contribution when he does speak up; often leading to the group dissolving into even more chaos as Bonhwa sits back and enjoys the noise.

THE MOON    As you might have gathered, Bonhwa is as bull-headed as his sun sign might suggest. Equal parts stuck in his ways, unable to back down from a challenge and impossible to budge, Bonhwa's obstinance appears in all facets of his life, from refusing to give up on an impossible task (like trying to win a game against a member that's beaten him four times already) to refusing to change his mind on a topic or break from his routine. Bonhwa's obstinance is rooted in his need for stability and control, like he's afraid that if he lets one thing change everything else will fall apart. He can heads with other people when he's being so stubborn, as one might imagine, but ultimately Bonhwa doesn't mean any harm by it... he's just bull-headed.

Although being reserved isn't inherently a bad thing, Bonhwa is reserved in the sense that he believes it better to conceal and constrict his emotions rather than show his feelings or allow himself to fully feel them. He is far from adept at processing or even identifying his own emotions and bottles everything up to deal with later, but rather than dealing with it later, he continues to pile more and more into an overloaded container until nasty emotions begin to leak out the side. Sometimes he can come across as cold because of his lack of emotional expression.

Bonhwa holds himself to a higher standard than he holds other people to, and is harder on himself than he would be anyone else. With a perfectionist streak, Bonhwa is frequently evaluating and criticizing his actions and his skillset, leading him to remain in a cycle of chasing perfection that will never come. He doesn't turn this critical nature on others, nor is he prone to voicing his own criticisms of himself to other people. On the outside, he might seem self-assured simply because of his emotional restrictions, but there might be turmoil underneath that exterior.

When backed into a corner or confronted with something he doesn't want to face, Bonhwa has the tendency to use sarcastic responses as a defense mechanism. As one might know, wounded animals are the most dangerous, and despite his fairly mellow demeanor most of the time, Bonhwa's tongue can be sharp when he feels backed into a corner or like someone is digging their fingers into a festering wound. It's one of the reasons that Bonhwa dislikes allowing himself to feel, this need to protect himself with sarcastic quips that might seem out of character given his general demeanor.

He struggles to express himself and communicate with others in matters of feelings especially, often lacking the emotional comprehension to talk about how he feels or someone else does. Bonhwa has difficulty understanding his own emotions on a base level, let alone how to express them to others and would far rather say nothing about them at all, because he can never seem to find the words to say what he means. Matters of extreme emotion aren't something he can fix with logic, and often Bonhwa feels as though offering logical solutions to other members or friends when they have emotional issues causes strife, despite doing his best to aid.

BACKGROUND where in the wilds did you wander?

THE ORIGIN    There isn't anything notable, really, about Bonhwa's early childhood. He was born to loving parents, the only child in his family, and he has a comfortable life without wanting for much. He starts going to piano lessons at a young age, but he doesn't have the interest in pursuing it that his mother hopes he'll have and, after a year or two, she lets him quit.

Her next wise idea is to put her son in martial arts, and that, at least, seems to last longer before Bonhwa inevitably is drawn to something else—dance. Martial arts are fun, to a degree, but Bonhwa is more interested in the artform that is dance, and it is something he can choose for himself, rather than being pushed into it by his mother in her own attempts to get something to stick.

At first, Bonhwa's mother and father aren't enthusiastic by the idea of their son learning to dance. It takes time for them to come around, but eventually, Bonhwa (with the aid of his aunt, his mother's sister) is able to convince them. Their agreement, however, comes with stipulations, expectations of high performance in school and not allowing anything important to fall to the wayside while he's pursuing trivial matters like dance. Bonhwa agrees, and so it begins.

He falls in love with dance. It's easy to love. As the years trickle by, Bonhwa strives for perfection in all that he does, and dance is no different. He thinks of different futures—a choreographer, a dance teacher, a backup dancer—and in the end, nothing happens quite as he intends.

THE TURN    When Bonhwa's first approached by an agency, he's fourteen and he doesn't believe the scouter is an actual recruiter for a company, so he runs away and throws her card in the trash. In all of the careers he's ever thought of, being an idol was something he always thought was something of an unreachable dream, even for someone as driven as him. The truth is, Bonhwa can't see himself fitting in with an idol group. There are a number of reasons, but his looks are one. He's in that strange stage of a teenager's life where everything feels wrong, their skin doesn't fit right and everything is a blow to their confidence.

He goes on with his life and doesn't think about the scouting incident again, except sometimes in passing, and only ever scoffs at it because it certainly wasn't a real scouter.

As fate would have it, Bonhwa's scouted a second time. It's not the same scouter or the same company, and he's with a friend when it happens. They're both offered cards and told about an audition, and when Bonhwa tries to laugh this instance off, too, his friend refuses to let him. One of them has to be the braincell, and in that moment, it isn't Bonhwa; he isn't using any of his.

Bonhwa decides to attend the audition with his friend. After all, the worst thing that can happen is rejection, and Bonhwa can live with rejection so long as he gives it his all; worse to never know what might happen, even if he still harbors some belief that he's not fit for the idol industry. His friend is enthusiastic to have a companion to go to the audition with, and though they're both rooting for each other, only one of them gets in.

It's Bonhwa.

parents, shim junhyeong + park bora (1967 + 1970) ; 3/10

Don't get bonhwa wrong, his parents aren't absent or anything to that degree. However, that isn't to say he's at all lose with them. They've always had higher expectations for their son than the things he aspires to be, and Bonhwa knows it. They're the kind of parents who wouldn't say anything to his face, but get around other members of the family and complain about his life choices and how they love him but they never know where they went wrong. Bonhwa's not ignorant to these behaviors, but chooses to ignore them, because at the end of the day, he doesn't see or speak to either of his parents that often anyway. Their disapproval isn't an easy pill to swallow, but Bonhwa has learned that it's best to let it go and carry on with what he wants to do with his life.

+ they never do quite come around. They thought maybe he'd give up on the idol life after the disbandment of 1THE9, but then he debuts solo, and they sighed and shook their heads. They hoped he'd give up when he left MAX Entertainment, but then he found his way into DGDG. And still, to this day, neither of his parents care for what he's doing and are waiting for the day when he realizes it's a "waste of his time".

Bonhwa's ex-groupmates and eight of his biggest headaches (yes, Yongha's included). Even though Bonhwa was never the leader of 1THE9, it seemed like more often than not he shared in the duty with Yongha, which he didn't really mind. Bonhwa considers them friends and stays in contact with them, even if they're not always in contact every day. He's met up with members once in a while and makes sure to keep track of everyone's activities, because that's just what Bonhwa does. When schedules overlap, he's sure to find a moment to say hi and bye since they're obviously... busy with their own schedules and groups. He's particiularly good at finding and harrassing Yongha, of course.

" song, call yourself stupid one more time and see what happens. "

Being around Moon Song reminds Bonhwa, in a way, of being around members of 1THE9, although he's not sure any of them were quite as... high maintenance as Song. Bonhwa might have an abundance of patience, but sometimes, Song is extremely skilled at pushing all of his buttons, particularly when Song starts being self-pitying. Bonhwa might not lose his temper at Song, but more often than not Bonhwa is the member who would give Song the tough love and remind him that life is not a walk in the park and when happens, it does no one any good to lay down and cry about it. Bonhwa likes him well enough, he just doesn't tolerate bull from anyone and that includes kids.

- Bonhwa is also mildly annoyed that this idiot is taller than him.

STAGENAME HWA 화. although Bonhwa likes the meaning of his name and thinks it would make a unique stagename, glorious doesn't exactly feel like it suits the concept of DGDG. Therefore, Bonhwa chose to use the shortened form, Hwa, as a stagename. It's a little softer, at least, than Bonhwa. However, he's more often referred to in articles, videos, and shows as SIM BONHWA 심본화 due to his tenure in UNDER NINETEEN and as a member of 1THE9.

UNDER NINETEEN CONTESTANT    In 2018, Bonhwa was introduced as an UNDER NINETEEN contestant that would quickly gain popularity for his skills. Bonhwa finished first overall, replacing DOYUM in the competition.

1THE9    In 2019, Bonhwa debuted as a member of temporary group 1THE9 (replacing member DOYUM). He was the main dancer, lead rapper, vocal and center of 1THE9 during the group's duration.

SOLO    2021 brings about Bonhwa's solo debut under MAX Entertainment, though his solo career is to be quite short-lived. Bonhwa makes his debut with a single album, but after promptions for youth conclude, there are no further promotions for Sim Bonhwa.

PAST HEADLINES

SIM BONHWA RANKS NUMBER 1 ON UNDER NINETEEN ONCE AGAIN, SECURING FIRST PLACE AND CENTER POSITION    After four consecutive voting periods where he was on top of the top 9, it shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone when Bonhwa was announced as the first place trainee. Still, it created a buzz, as most things survival show related do, and Bonhwa's rank as number 1 was discussed frequently in the days that followed the show's conclusion. Some were critical of his ranking, and others were ecstatic that their favorite trainee ranked well.

SIM BONHWA TO MAKE SOLO DEBUT WITH MINI ALBUM "YOUTH"    Once it was announced in late 2020 that Sim Bonhwa was going to return as a soloist in early 2021, the internet was once again abuzz with his name. There were people who thought Bonhwa wasn't a good choice for a soloist, and others that argued that he'd do well on his own.

SIM BONHWA TO PART WAYS WITH MAX ENTERTAINMENT    It's an announcement that comes out of the blue, after a few months of silence following the conclusion of WHO, YOU's promotional period. The news that Bonhwa is leaving MAX Entertainment takes fans and those who aren't his fans alike by surprise. It was his company before UNDER NINETEEN and the company he debuted with following the conclusion of 1THE9's promotions, so why shouldn't he have stayed? Well, as revealed, MAX Entertainment was actually closing its doors.

TRAINING BACKGROUND

MAX ENTERTAINMENT    Sim Bonhwa walks into MAX Entertainment and makes it his mission to reach the top. He's a trainee with talent and promise, and a drive to improve that makes him someone other trainees consider a threat. As time passes and Bonhwa pushes himself harder and harder to excel, and stands at the top of the trainee pool time and again, he earns the nickname monster trainee. He's the one the other trainees are worried about. He's the one who seems to stand the closest to the promise of debut, the strongest competitor. He's intimidating. He's severe. He means business, and he doesn't fool around when it's time to work hard. He's young, but it's clear he's threatening

He doesn't make friends in MAX Entertainment. It's hard for him to make friends when he's the trainee that everyone's wary of, sizing him up, wondering what it would take in order to take his place at the head of the pack. Bonhwa doesn't care. He didn't come here to make friends. He didn't come to make enemies, but it makes no bones to him if he's not liked.

As Bonhwa trains and waits for his chance to debut, it becomes clear MAX Entertainment isn't ready to launch a group yet. Predebut lineups are created and scrapped a few times, Bonhwa in each one. The company seems to be grasping for something, and when the opportunity of UNDER NINETEEN arises, it seems to be the chance that the company needs.

UNDER NINETEEN    It wasn't really Bonhwa's choice to go on a survival show. His company wanted to send trainees, and so there he was, auditioning for UNDER NINETEEN. He was selected as one of the 57 trainee participants, and would go on to be one of the more popular trainees. In the first ranking episode, Bonhwa would land in the top nine as #3, reaching for the top of the competition. As a first rank, it was impressive and it set the tone for what the rest of Bonhwa's time on UNDER NINETEEN would be like. He wasn't going to go down easily...

...the next ranking episode, Bonhwa had dropped two spots.

...the one after that, he dropped two more.

And yet Bonhwa didn't let that get his spirits down, didn't let it discourage or upset him. He used it as fuel to motivate him to work even harder, to show even more of his talent and his humor to the viewers, because he couldn't rely on boisterous personality, infectious cuteness or anything endearing like that to garner favor. He had to rely on his talents and his occasional humorous quip to get him up in the ranks.

And it worked.

By the time the fourth ranking episode rolled around, Bonhwa was ready and had clawed his way back up into the top nine. But even then, he was higher than he'd ever been—Bonhwa was sitting pretty at rank one. He was the top trainee in the competition now. He was in the spot that the trainees coveted. And now that he was in that place, Bonhwa was going to make sure it was hard to take away.

No one even came close. For the rest of UNDER NINETEEN's runtime, Bonhwa was in the top place. Even as the other top nine spots shuffled around, some trainees rising and others falling, one proving to enter the top nine in the very last episode, Bonhwa's rank as #1 was cemented, set in stone. He wasn't so much sailing through the competition as he was flying, each challenge under his belt another victory that would carry him into the final group. He was just what he'd been when he was training under MAX Entertainment, the highest competitor, the monster trainee

1THE9    Sim Bonhwa debuts as the center and main dancer of temporary group 1THE9, surrounded by the eight other trainees who made it through the competition. He promotes with them for eighteen months, growing used to the chaos of being surrounded by eight other idiots (lovingly, of course) and promoting as a member of a group. Bonhwa might be independant as a whole, but he learns to like having a team around him, even if he's stubborn and often the quietest person in the room. 1THE9 cracks some of his shell and get under his skin, but not in an awful way; they annoy him to be sure, but Bonhwa grows to consider them his friends, and with each promotion and activity, he realizes the time with 1THE9 grows shorter and shorter and soon they'll all return to the companies they came from.

Their seventeenth month rolls around, and though they're supposed to disband, their promotional period is extended by one more month. Bonhwa makes the most of it, enjoying the bond they've curated in eighteen months. But all too soon, it comes to an end and Bonhwa finds himself sad to part ways with 1THE9, despite how much they could aggravate him from time to time.

He returns to MAX, ready for whatever the road ahead holds.

MAX ENTERTAINMENT    What the road ahead holds is, apparently, a solo career. He's back in the company for perhaps a week when he's told about the company's desire to debut him solo and ride the fame that came with 1THE9. Bonhwa agrees, because there's no guarantee that another chance to debut will come from MAX Entertainment anytime soon. Bonhwa seizes the opportunity, and before long, he's working on preparations for his debut rather than preparations for trainee evaluations.

He's quiet. Extremely quiet. Closer to radio silence than anything as he prepares for the big debut. He talks to the other ex-1THE9 members more than his family and he next to never posts on social media.

Finally, Bonhwa's solo debut lands, and the silence makes sense. WHO, YOU reminds Bonhwa of BLAH and BAD GUY from his 1THE9 days, in a way, and it's familiar territory. What isn't familiar territory is promoting alone. Bonhwa manages—of course he does—but he has to admit that he misses promoting with a group. It's quieter than he's used to, working alone, and he doesn't have anyone's energy to play off.

It doesn't last long. As Bonhwa works through the promotion period for youth, his first mini album, MAX Entertainment is facing financial struggles exacerbated by the money spent to get Bonhwa on shows and to promote his debut. His promotions end and Bonhwa finds himself in a state of static. MAX Entertainment sends him to 'take a month break' and when he returns, he finds they didn't prepare anything for his future. And they aren't intending to do so. The company makes plans to shut down, and Bonhwa realizes he's on the market for a new company.

A.DEN ENTERTAINMENT    April 2021 finds Bonhwa standing in A.DEN Entertainment, preparing for his turn to audition for the company. The name Sim Bonhwa might carry some interest behind it, being a monster trainee who dominated UNDER NINETEEN and went so far to promote in a group and as a soloist, but Bonhwa doesn't let himself get cocky. He's confident, but not overly so and when his audition is over, he feels that he's given the best he had to give, and that's the best he can offer.

He passes the audition, to no one's surprise.

Sim Bonhwa walks into A.DEN Entertainment as a trainee with the intent to take no prisoners and give no quarter. He starts building that reputation again, the monster trainee with the sharp expression who never speaks to anyone. It's not entirely an accurate reputation—Bonhwa speaks to the other trainees when he's spoken to, but he's not one to start a conversation unless he has a tip for another trainee (he's not here to play, and he's here to compete, but he's not an and competition isn't fun unless there's worthy rivals afoot).

He's not the most popular, among the other A.DEN trainees. He's a threat, and people don't like threats. But once again, it's of no consequence to Bonhwa. He's nice enough to those around him, but he won't play at being friends with people who he know are waiting for a chance to stab him in the back. He doesn't have time for that, or for being petty.

For the most part, his time in A.DEN is spent minding his own business. But if someone gets in his way, Bonhwa isn't afraid of running them over.

He's going to debut.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

FURTHER SOLO PROMOTIONS    More likely in the later years of DGDG, unless A.DEN saw the need to debut a soloist from the group earlier on, Bonhwa is highly likely to return to releasing solo music in the same vein as WHO, YOU — on the darker, moodier side, in keeping with his personal tastes as far as concepts that he thinks he suits go. I am likely to hunt up songs etc for this at a later time.

FUTURE HEADLINES

SIM BONHWA TO DEBUT WITH UPCOMING BOY GROUP DGDG    Naturally, Bonhwa once again making his return to the idol industry sets netizens abuzz, this time with another boy group. It gets attention put on DGDG, with people waiting to see what energy Bonhwa will come back with, and whether or not it will match the concept of youth or his later activities with 1THE9.

SIM BONHWA'S INTERVIEW

HELLO THERE, HWA. PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF.    the sound of shuffling is audible in the recording, before sim bonhwa clears his throat.  "hello. i'm hwa, the ace of dgdg."

ALRIGHT... HOW DOES IT FEEL TO DEBUT?    for a moment, there's silence, like bonhwa is thinking about what to say. eventually, he hums.  "it's exciting, of course. i'm ready to show everyone what we've prepared."

YOUR TRAINING HASN'T BEEN VERY LONG... HOW ARE YOU GUYS GETTING ALONG?    bonhwa's chuff of laughter is audible, as is the creaking of his chair, like he's leaning back.  "as well as one might expect. i think we have a very brotherly relationship, complete with the bickering."  there's a pause, and then he adds,  "well, you want me to be honest, don't you?"

ARE THERE ANY IDOLS YOU LOOK UP TO? ANY ROLE MODELS?    bonhwa doesn't hesitate in answering.  "taemin-sunbaenim,"  he replies immediately.  "i look up to taemin-sunbaenim."

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE, WHICH STRENGTH OF YOURS WOULD YOU PICK?    he seems to think about his answer again, before he eventually replies,  "if it counts, my determination. it's why i'm here. if not, i'll pick my dancing. i think that's my best skill, out of all."

THANK YOU FOR THIS INTERVIEW.    "thank you for your time."

RINA SAYS layout inspired by mintleaf designs, if you couldn't tell you must be blind lmao i really like the way they did multiple borders to break sections in some of their layouts and i wanted to try it out myself. i probably won't do it again though; it looks nice but it's not really the rInA vibe

+ as someone who has met jahan, i can confirm he's not as tall as they say he is (in nerd) and so i lowered bonhwa's height some. he can endure. he should be glad i don't make him as short as i could.

+ i'll undoubtedly have more to add to this later but as of right now, i was rushing to get this done and turned in before i lost motivation lmao. so uh. enjoy this piece of schist

+ extras etc will come later
