BACKGROUND technically, it all started before ahn sohee was even born. tony ahn, had been an idol since 1996 when h.o.t debuted. even after the group disbanded, he was riding high on his fame, and he had access to any number of women he wanted. it just so happened that he ended up getting one of the women pregnant in 2002. now, the woman didn't want this baby, and she told him as much. however, tony felt differently. he offered to pay for all of the woman's hospital bills and keep her well adjusted if her would simply have the baby and sign over her legal rights to him. the woman agreed.

when sohee was born, tony was still maintaining his schedules with his new group, jtl. he seemed like a super dad. he had sole custody of his daughter, he was performing as a soloist and a member of his group, and he appeared on variety shows more often. it only started to weigh on him a year later, and he thought about quitting the music industry until sohee's grandfather talked him out of it. whenever his schedule was too demanding, sohee's grandfather would fly to seoul from los angeles to take care of her for him. and this worked out until it was time for tony to enlist in the military.

he asked his father to either move back to seoul to take care of sohee or take her back with him to los angeles. however, his father was getting older, and it would have been too hard for him or tony's mother to care for sohee on their own. another idol, who also had a secret child of their own, opened up to tony about the different homing options for wealthy children that couldn't live with their parents. from there, tony chose a well-reputed option in tokyo, japan. he went with sohee to drop her off a mere day before he had to start his military duties. she begged him for over an hour, sobbing and clinging to him, not to leave her there. but at that point, he didn't have a choice. sohee was left with the director of the children's home, face covered in tears and snot, hands red from pulling at her father's clothes, and heart broken from being left.

sohee didn't have much of a choice but to adjust to her new surroundings. the first few years, she still had hopes of returning home to be with her father again. they would write each other often, and she always asked him to take his vacation days from the military to come see her. he would always express to her that he had to use those vacation days to take care of their finances or work, so she didn't see her father again until september of 2010. he came to visit her, and a 7 year old sohee thought she was going home. she packed her things, but her father was distracted with his career. he was casted in popular variety shows, and he was working on new music. he told sohee that it would be better for her to stay in japan, especially since he didn't want anyone to find out about her. it was this last part that broke her completely. her father didn't want anyone to know about her. it was then that she lost all hope of returning home.

she resented him. she used the money he sent her recklessly, she trashed any gifts he sent, and she rejected any plans of her visiting him or him visiting her. she spent holidays alone, and it was during this time that she even stopped reaching out to her grandparents and aunt in los angeles, convinced that they too didn't care anything about her. if they did, she wouldn't have been abandoned in japan.

in december of 2013, tony told sohee to return to seoul to attend his court hearing. he had been investigated for illegal gambling, and he was now on trial. the 10 year old told him no, but he told her it wasn't an option. so, she was sent for by his manager and showed up on december 6th to the hearing. she was dressed up and was told to sit right behind her father. it was in this hearing that tony revealed to the public that she was his daughter. at first, she was thrilled, and the hope of coming home and having a relationship with her father again grew again. it was short-lived when sohee watched her father's lawyer use her to get him out of any serious punishments. they expressed that he was an only father and couldn't be sent to prison and should be exonerated or the poor child would be fatherless. hah! sohee had been fatherless since she was 5, but the lawyer didn't say anything about that.

while the act of being a single father lessened his punishment, giving him only six months in prison and a one year probation, it had placed an indefinite wedge between tony and sohee. she hated him. as he dropped her off to the airport, she told him that she was glad he was going to prison and wished he received more time. when he tried apologizing to her, she walked away from him and got on her flight back to tokyo.

sohee put all her effort into blending effortlessly as a student at her boarding school. she had no plans of returning home. she joined the school choir, multiple clubs, and made plans with friends. it was during this time that she started developing her current personality. she hated having nothing to do because it made her feel alone, so she made sure there was always something to do.

for her 13th birthday, her father summoned her back to seoul. he had a small party planned for her. it was her grandparents, aunt, and kim jaeduc, his roommate. they had cake and gifts prepared for her, but she wanted to know why they were doing all this when they'd never done this for her before. her grandfather reminded her that they used to do things like this all the time before tony went to the military, and they all want the family to go back to how it was before. tony gifted her with a room in the apartment, asking her to move in with him to be a family again. she rejected him and stormed out. surprisingly, it was jaeduc who went to go get her. he gifted her with a ticket back to tokyo as he had a feeling she wouldn't be open to moving back right away. he told her that he understood where her anger was coming from, but he wanted her to be open to at least visiting. otherwise, her room would be going to waste. it was then that she cracked the first smile since she arrived in seoul. and she agreed.

so for four years, sohee remained in tokyo but agreed to visit. she returned for holidays and birthdays, and sometimes even the weekends when she had nothing better to do. she would spend time with her father and jaeduc, and sometimes even her grandparents and aunt. she still didn't forgive her family or even open up more to them. she was distant and cold to them despite their efforts, and she didn't allow them to get close to her. she didn't trust them. while she didn't feel as strongly to her grandparents and aunt, she still very much hated her father. sohee did, however, enjoy spending time with jaeduc. they acted just as an actual uncle and niece would, and if there were any disagreements or arguments in the ahn family, he would work hard to help sohee see both sides of the situation.

it was one of those weekends that sohee came to visit in november of 2019 when sohee was out with jaeduc to get groceries when she was scouted by a representative of mik. despite being an active vocalist in her boarding school's choir and the singing club she'd formed, she'd never thought about doing anything serious with it. she didn't want to be anything like her father, but jaeduc convinced her to give it a try. while he really just wanted her to be closer to her father and move back to seoul, sohee figured she could become better than her father ever was.

　✧ this was the first sohee had heard about this, so she didn't have time to think about an answer. the follow up was fairly easy, but the former was something to ponder for a second. then it hits her, unfortunately, her something different was, "I'm the child of a first generation idol. my father is tony an, from h.o.t." with a nod, she continues, "and yes, a person has to put themselves first to get somewhere in life. and you can't do that without love."

STORY the two meet in early 2020 when sohee begins attending hanlim. she's debuted with razzle dazzle, but at the time jay is still training. so despite him being a third year, he will call her sunbae. and this boy had no shame, so he will carry her bag and books and follow her around like a tall puppy. she doesn't really care for him at first, just going along with it because she can. honestly, she just thinks he's doing it because she debuted, but jay truly likes her. he likes how tiny she is, and he finds her cold demeanor interesting. neither of them attend school often due to schedules and training, but he gets her phone number pretty early on by simply asking. he would text her to find out when she was attending, simply so he could do the same. this continues on until he joins a survival show in june of 2020.

before he goes, he asks sohee to cheer him on. "I know I'll be able to debut if you're cheering me on." she agreed, though she didn't really have any intention of steadily watching the show. however, surprising herself, she did. and she would vote every time, screenshotting her vote and sending it to him, with a there, I'm cheering for you.

they don't see each other again until the end of the year, after jay has debuted. it's close to christmas, and they exchange christmas gifts (both one piece-related). he asks her to be his girlfriend, but she rejects him. "we can go on dates, but we can't be together. I have too much to do." he accepts this, and they start casually dating. during 2021 is when they learn a lot about each other and become much closer. they say opposites attract, and damn were they right because jay and sohee fit like pieces to a puzzle. he talks to fill her quiet, she relaxes him when he gets stressed, and they both support each other openly. to the rest of the world, they are each other's seniors (jay is her senior in school but she's his senior in k-pop) and friends.

because he doesn't try to change sohee and isn't intimidated by her at all, she finds herself getting very comfortable with him. now, jay is an intense person, and he loves hard. this is no different for sohee. he knows how to reign it in when it seems like she's feeling smothered, but he will go as far as he can. he knows he has to work around her schedule, which is fine because he has his own busy one to fulfill. as time goes by, she starts to become more accomodating towards him and less likely to reject his advances (hand holding, hugging, kissing, etc.).

however, jay is going to ask throughout their relationship if she will be his girlfriend, but she's going to keep rejecting him until she feels completely comfortable with him. her rejections will vary. "being together is risky for idols." he never takes it too personally because he does know that she's only interested in him, but he does wish that she would stop rejecting him.
