PERSONALITY one of the social butterflies of razzle dazzle, josie makes friends wherever she goes. while her brothers might scold her for ignoring the risks of talking to strangers, josie can't help but strike up conversations. because of this, she has many friends - idols and non-idols alike. these friends of hers are subject to her overwhelming affection. josephine is always seen clutching some part of whoever she's with; whether it be pinky, wrist, arm, you name it. she likes the physical contact and in a way, it's helpful in grounding her and calming her down. to those who know her well, it's become second nature to hold out a hand for her to grasp. it's an endearing trait but when it comes to the touch-adverse members of the group, it can be a little bit of a nuisance. despise this, her heart of gold makes her a good friend to have. she's reliable and true to her word, very rarely deceiving those around her. if there are promises to be kept and deals to uphold, josie's the girl for the job. her moral compass means that it's hard for her to imagine betraying someone that relies on her. in that sense, the guilt of betrayal is not one josie plans on ever dealing with. her strict routine does not include breaking promises. as for her routine, she is very organised in everything she does. both in the presentable and the plannable, josie doesn't miss a single detail. her belongings are all arranged in a certain way, her closet colour-coded and her plans thorough. if josephine doesn't have a plan, it makes her nervous and anxious.

BACKGROUND josephine bae, otherwise known as bae jukyung, was born on the 3rd of march to parents bae joohyun and jason bae. her mother gave birth to her unexpectedly and thus, josie was delivered in the comfort of their toronto home. there were some complications at birth, mostly due to the risk of giving birth at home without preparation. however, after a few days in the NICU, josie was fine to be taken home again. the life she was born into, was a comfortable one. the bae family were not rich, but lived happily and safely. considering the parents had to provide for josephine along with her two older brothers, jeff and jacob, it was a miracle that they weren't in debt. joohyun was a professor at the university of toronto and jason was a handyman. though not the most lavish lifestyle, it was one full of love and care - that josie grew up in such a household, is one of her greatest pleasures.
josephine's life wasn't anything out of the ordinary, at least not in her childhood. she grew up alongside her brothers, learning new things every day and making wonderful memories. the simple things in life were what made the little girl so happy; learning how to ride a bike, beating jacob at football, playing hide and seek with jeff. all these small things meant josie was a very happy child. she was taken care of. she was loved. that should've been enough. unfortunately things went south on the upcoming days to her 13th birthday. as a teenage girl, thus came the difficulties of high school. josephine made a small group of friends, but even they could not outweigh the harrassment that she endured.
being one of the only asian kids in school meant that she was subject to bullying, mostly racism at first. it lead to a tough conversation with her mother about why nothing was actually wrong with her, that some people were just cruel. and though her brothers tried to protect her as much as they could, since they were not in her year - there was not much they could do, especially since they too were picked on for their race. as time went on and the teenagers got older, the harrassment took a different face. her mother still remembers the day that her daughter came back from school, cheeks red raw from sobbing. when questioned, josie opened up about the comments the kids at school were making.
'god, how can somebody be so ugly?' 'no wonder the lunchladies didn't have enough for everyone today, josephine's eating it all!' 'i feel bad for you. you're fat, ugly and to top it off - asian.'
something changed that day. perhaps that was when josie was forced to grow up, forced to survive the torture of high school. her family watched as their happy little girl turned into something different, something hollow. she began to ignore her studies, stopped leaving her room if not for school. the family was distraught, unsure of how to help her because no matter how many times they reassured her of her beauty, nothing stuck. nothing outweighed the constant comments. and eventually, that was when josie stopped eating. she thought that if she stopped pigging out, that mybe she'd be skinny and therefore pretty in the eyes of her classmaates. she refused the school lunches and at home, took plates to her room to then dispose of the food. the only thing she ever ate was a few bites of different salads, and a lot of gum.
there wasn't a lot of suspicion from her family, though they noticed her gradually losing weight. they mostly assumed that the stress was getting to her, and would double their efforts of reasuring her. it wasn't until all of her habits caught up to her, and she passed out in class. after being taken to the hospital, they informed her she was severely malnourished and underweight. the outline of her bones could be seen under observation and the very sight made her parents sob. josie was so far gone that she smiled at this new knowledge, thankful that she was finally skinny and could be pretty. her parents blamed themselves for not noticing, for not cherishing her the way they should have. her brothers refused to see her while she was laying in that hospital bed, hooked to a feeding tube. they couldn't bare to see their sister in that state, only a fragment of what they knew her to be. it was traumatising enough for her parents to see her wasting away. after a few days of observation, it was agreed upon that josie would be sent to a treatment facility and that she would be pulled out of school, since she would be gone for an unknown time.
the facility was both part of her worst nightmares and her greatest dreams. it was hard for her to adjust to the setting; attending therapy every day, reaching food milestones so that she could gain weight, opening up about her insecurities and torture. things were not easy for her, and often she would have breakdowns and tantrums - refusing to participate in any of her treatment plan. she was ward-bound for several months, as whenever she made some progress, she would hit a wall and return to her old ways. there were three things that kept her motivated during her time in the ward. the first being her family, who visited her as often as they could. her mother would sit by her bedside, holding her hand and telling her how proud she was. her father would accompany her to the garden, holding her upright as they discussed the flowers. her brothers would bring fun things for them to do; puzzles, crosswords, things like that. it kept the hope alive that she might one day overcome her disorder. the second thing helping her through it, were the other inpatients. a group of them became incredibly close and dependent on each other. there were five in total, all struggling with an eating disorder. the five of them were an odd sight, all skin and bones and trauma. but somehow, they made each other better. when one was struggling, the other four would hurry to support them. they promised to recover together, or not at all. the five of them; josephine, minseol, mitchell, quinn and davide. they were formidable.
and lastly, her love for singing. josephine loved to sing and had been since diapers, continuing all the way up to present time. the joy she and those around her felt when she began to hum her tunes, was unlike any other. her voice often brought her mother to tears, and jacob was nothing less than excited to share his interest with her too. the two of them would practice together at all hours, much to the dismay of neighbours, but when voices as beautiful as theres were displayed - there was little to do but listen. when josephine's suffering began, the songbird sung no longer. she could not find the energy to use her voice, too focused on counting calories and scrutinising her body. it was only with her friends help that she began to sing again, with one of the ward nurses arranging little shows for her to perform in each week. life was being breathed back into her, in the form of her family, friends and that lovely dedication to music. one of the days that her family vistied, they sat in her room cross-legged, discussing what might happen when she's discharged. josephine, who had become rather obsessed with certain kpop groups, had one wish for her life after she left treatment. she told them that she wanted to return to her mothers first hometown and to become an idol. it was then that jacob revealed that he was leaving to korea soon, to do just as his sister wished. it was difficult for her parents to swallow. they promised to support this dream of hers after she recovered, but were terrified to have their only daughter in such a strict industry. jacob promised to take care of her, along with their auntie that they would stay with. it was hard to refuse when they saw the look in the siblings eyes, like the heavens had descended from above to aline things perfectly for them.

in total, josephine was in recovery for just under a year. she was discharged in 2016, the second of her little group of friends to recover. jacob moved to korea first as her parents wanted to monitor her for another year before letting her join her brother. it was tough for them to part with jacob, but josie kept the hope that if she focused on her health, that she would join her brother on their journey to becoming idols soon enough. the siblings were homesick but relying on each others strength, and encouragement and in the year that jacob and josie were separated, jacob had landed an audition for cre.ker entertainment. when news came of his acceptance, the baes were over the moon. seeing her brothers success only motivated josie to keep pushing through her doubts and struggles. whenever she would consider skipping meals, she would think about how happy jacob looked when he facetimed her with the news. she wanted that happiness too, she deserved it.
eventually in the middle of 2017, josie was cleared to join her brother in korea. after jacob putting a word in and upon seeing her talents, cre.ker offered her a trainee position too but warned her that they didn't have plans for a girl group until the distant future. naturally, she was slightly discouraged but instead threw herself into training. with all the time she had, she even started up an instagram page where she would showcase her voice. though she was still afraid that her past might find her, and never truly showed her face in these videos. the videos harboured a little attention and the few comments that would compliment her were reinforcements that she needed to keep trying, in hopes that her debut could be discussed. when jacob debuted in the boyz, josie was often called upon to be extras in music videos and even fetaured in some of the variety shows the group partook in. she was a trainee there for 10 months before being approached by MIK. they had stumbled across her instagram page, that since the beginning of her training, had been updated. she had since revealed her face in the videos and had even begun to post dancing clips too, though she was still working on her skills. she had developed a small following and this was how mik entertainment discovered her. they knew she was just what they needed. someone with her talents was wasting away waiting for an opportunity to debut. when mik entertainment eventually approached her, she was hesitant at first. she informed them of her baggage, that they might not want to train someone who, at the drop of hat, could relapse. in reply, they pitched their idea of razzle dazzle; a group full of women with differences and how they hoped to encourage fans to embrace their differences. after hearing this, josie was transferred and began her training.

her weakest skill is her dancing but this doesn't make her a bad dancer. the teachers have praised her on her lines and timing, but she struggles with energy and sharp movement. she tends to rely on some of the stronger trainees for dancing, questioning them about what she can do to improve. she's slightly bummed out that she's sub-par at dancing, but isn't too bothered about it.

BACKGROUND minseol and josephine met during their stays at the treatment ward. it was a fated meeting, considering the korea-born minseol was only in toronto on vacation before being hospitalised there. the younger female suffered from bulimia, and had previously been hospitalised for it in korea. her old habits had been slowly returning and a few weeks into her summer vacation, she became a patient in the ward. josie had already been there for a month, so the nurses had tasked her with helping minseol get familiar with the place. the nurses were always very strict on the rule of support systems, and friendship was encouraged from the get-go. josie, being as social as she is, was happy to be her friend and despite the latters lack of replies, josie would sit and keep her company regardless. slowly but surely, minseol grew quite fond of the canadian. it was hard not to be when she waas the only person who spoke korean and could translate for her. but also because of her endearing personality, minseol found it hard to deny fondness. to minseol, josephine was enchanting and ethereal, just like the petal of a flower. with such foreign feelings, minseol never acted on them with her paranoia taking hold of the pure emotions before she could spill them out.

minseol is quite a different character to josie, in more ways than one. for starters, she's quiet and very rarely enjoys making conversations, no matter the amount of people. even with her friends, she takes a passive role in discussion and prefers to sit, observe and listen in. it is because of this introverted nature, that she is also an incredibly cowardly person. if something involves speaking up, she'll avoid it as best she can. she hates standing up for herself and unfortunately, is passive in the face of others misfortune or mistreatment. it's not that she doesn't want to be bold and to defend herself or others, it's that every time she tries to; she finds herself paralyzed and stuck in place.
a trait that she's most proud of, is her hard-working ethic. though she is passive in conversation, she has never been passive in her achievements. along with her stark ambition, this meant that minseol was successful even from a young age. if there is one thing she excels in, it's putting her dreams into action and doing her best to achieve it. it's the collective of these traits that kickstarted the opening of her bakery.
