the only phrase that can truly grasp sev’s character is one that is uttered by his wiser, older best friend, jace zhang. in the latter’s words: “this guy is on his first life– like, there’s just no other way to put it. i have no idea how he’s survived to twenty, really!”

innocence comes easy to joseph cha. it’s telling from the way he’s the youngest amongst three siblings and very much a mama’s boy the moment a word slips from his mouth. his introductions will almost always be a shy smile, not inherently enough to make one fall in love at first sight conventionally because of it’s awkwardness and tension, but is one that reels someone to welcome him warmly. sev is the guy who reacts to jokes late (if he even understands them at all); ponders about stupid topics and proceeds to involve others by asking questions about said topics and while everyone agrees it’s not worth a braincell, they still entertain him. he is a reflection of what his mother has taught him from upbringing—save from the constant swearing and insufferable pubescent jokes; likeable, empathetic and polite. an endearing person is what sev is. he puts no effort into being worthy of admiration and yet still bears fruit from thin air.

on the surface, sev is more reserved. he’s meek and prefers if others make the first move, especially when surrounded by a loud personality that overwhelms his more calm one. however, much like his initial run with equally mellow jace, sev occasionally allows himself to take the first step, seeing as they’re on the same level. it’s difficult to truly know sev if you’re a mere acquaintance; he’s charming enough for small talk but will ultimately shy away for anything more than jokes and a bunch of shallow discussions. beyond that, sev seeks more profound relationships to move past simple laughs. although he does find great difficulty in making a lot of them, he’s content with a close-knit circle.

this isn’t to say he’s not well-loved. in fact, it may be the opposite, and sev is satisfied knowing people do still like him despite his introvertedness. some part of him likes the validation and it often fuels his “fake it til’ you make it!” confidence.

it should be noted that there aren’t enough people who know sev like the back of their hands; being a mysteriously closed-off but sweet and not snobbish guy keeps everyone curious – that’s just one of the things that make sev a campus favorite. to people who do know him, like his family, leia, jace and a select few in the aasa, he’s just a young boy navigating the edges of adult life. he’s silly and gullible, but it’s what makes him tolerable. he cares for others and isn’t afraid to show it, though he does go overboard sometimes with his assumptions. sev is the type of guy to actually learn something from little youtube videos with pointless facts about a niche because he’d never known it before (many cases where leia laughs out of humor and admiration and jace stares at him in disbelief of his naivety).

this also adds into his ‘all or nothing’ attitude. he’s oddly knowledgeable about some things, then knows nothing about topics that could be adjacent to it. not only is this found in his interests, but also his habits and work ethic. this rigidity often conflicts with his willingness to be a companion to others since he’s likely to impose his perceptions and opinions. for example, he prefers to do things smoothly, the way he imagines it would go according to a sketched plan stored in his brain rather than impulsively and in chunks. the same can be said about his lifestyle habits, which switch around according to his mood and dedication. for some months, he could be organized and keeping a tracker on every little thing (as useless as it sounds), then other times he’ll be letting himself go; in bed, playing games and handing poor submissions and just forgetting about it. thankfully, those periods never last longer than a week or so. they almost act as breaks from his regularly scheduled programming.

coinciding with this is his rather moody nature. he’s very driven by his emotions, either positively as a compassionate listener, but also negatively as someone isolated and avoidant. he tends to push people away during times of crisis or during those weeks where he’s letting himself slip out of his perfectionist ideals. it’s as if he’s slithering out of old skin before sinking into a new one. sev isn’t aggressive with his loved ones, but rather hard to reach when he’s at a low. he tends to numb himself when he faces problems, being incredibly hard to reach. he won’t directly say anything to anyone by keeping texts unanswered or simply ignoring any concern they have for him by sending a random tiktok. he’s getting better at opening up at the time of his problems, especially to jace and his older sisters, though it takes much longer for him to do so on the spot.

BACKGROUND
joseph hyunwoo cha was born in new york city to two first-generation korean immigrants, living a comfortable upbringing derived from his parents' hard work and suffering. by the time sev was born, nearly 13 years after his parents' first child, his mother and father were already near-retired and done with their corporate jobs, settling with opening a restaurant in koreatown. with two daughters, the couple wanted to try out a final time for baby boy, and fortunately, sev came into the world.

his life was rarely ever dull. having two older sisters, one already in her teens, and another who's just 4 years older, having sev was like getting another baby doll added to their collection of toys and trinkets. ambushed in glitter, pigtails and runs of hannah montana, sev grew up a tad differently to other boys his age. his father would be in meetings and so forth for the betterment of their restaurant business, whereas his mother would often manage the store; leaving him carried by claudia behind the register and imogen sitting on the floor like a tripping hazard.

being surrounded by all the wonderful women in his life, many of his friends growing up had always poked at him for being “too soft” and a “bore” whenever he wouldn't take part in any of the stupid things they did to piss off girls they liked. often times, sev would feel sort of left out and regretful of how he came to be, but as he grew into his teenage years, he's learned to appreciate the life his mother gave him and how his sisters have helped sustain it. this is exactly why sev has a big soft spot for his mother and his sisters, though it's no doubt he's way more gentle on his eldest sister. he even shamefully cried when claudia had to go away for college; a great contrast to his “ok, see you when i see you!” goodbye to imogen. it's all jokes, of course. 

seven wasn't all too serious about careers and everything until he was in his sophomore year of high school. it hit him like a truck of guilt rather than a mountain of passion. it was the same year that imogen was off to college. watching her through the application process as a full-blown, semi-developed teenager, sev was incredibly intimidated. he felt so overwhelmed for not only his sister, but for himself in another two years. so, since then, he thought long and hard about what he wanted to do with his life. 

here's where the guilt part comes in. although sev did majorly like the arts—specifically performing and all, given the number of dance classes he went through as a kid—he never really thought it was a viable career. well, that's the idea his parents had planted in his head. he understands, though. growing up lower-class and not having money is a fear that will continue to loom over his parents' ideals and they simply don't want him to experience the same thing. if he was as brave and uncompromising as imogen, who took up graphic design, then maybe he'd end up in an entirely different state.

so, to ensure he's not miserable while embarking on this semi-idealistic, half-realistic university hunt he's on, sev decided to pick a different interest and converge it into a bachelors degree. that's how he ended up applying for computer science for most of his choices by the time he was in his senior year. his youtube history primarily featured tech videos with gameplay highlights in-between. the summer after his sophomore year, sev took it upon himself to learn a programming language and also did ap computer science and math to boost his application.

in his head, he would've idealistically wanted to maybe go to california for university. but he knows he'd cry his off he couldn't make it home to his family in less than two hours, so he ended up picking nyu, elated that he could pursue something fun while making his parents proud.

CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
✴︎ asian american student associationsev joined the aasa in his freshman year of university almost immediately. his older sister, imogen, was an aasa alumni and loved being a part of the association, recommending him to sign up if he could. he was definitely glad he took her suggestion, especially since he met his bestest friend, jace, through the aasa. with both of them a bit reserved, the two took their sweet time to get along. eventually, sev stuck himself to jace's hip throughout their years at university. seven is currently a member of the standing committee, under the welfare wing.
✴︎ gaming and e-sports clubthis is more of a hobby club that sev impulsively joined when he was feeling particularly social. he thought, well, surely we'll all just be recluses glued to our screens right? he wasn't half-wrong, but the committee definitely had different plans, hosting events and offline get-togethers to let people socialize. sev doesn't regret joining though, it's one of the only other places he gets friends.

LIFESTYLE
✴︎ weekdayssev's weekdays are regularly programmed to a T (as seen in his spring term schedule). these are the days he cannot afford to up, because if monday goes wrong, then a domino effect occurs for the rest of the week and sev is unlikely to feel motivated to do something about it. if his week goes as planned, he'll be quite a content and productive person. he often has classes later in the day during the spring term, so he's usually up later than 9 am. though, he does like having time to spare when getting ready so he's not jittery off of nerves. sev is also the type to follow the basic routine he was used to when he lived with his parents. this means: eating at the conventional hours of breakfast, lunch and dinner; showering before leaving and upon returning, and so on. perhaps, the one thing he doesn't inherit from his mother's great scheduling skills is a proper sleeping schedule. it's not rare to see sev knock out at 10 pm, but it's also likely that he's awake at 4 am playing a video game and on a discord call. when he comes back from uni and/or work, sev likes to relax for at least 2 hours before doing any work he needs to do. on days where he can do work in the afternoon at the library, he'll take the chance. otherwise, his bedroom desk is fine enough (at the risk of getting 50% distracted). he will definitely not be doing any work when he comes back late from club meetings, though.
✴︎ weekendssaturdays and sundays are typically very loose, apart from his morning shifts at gongcha. sev has to keep the weekends relaxed or else he'll be too burnt out for the next week and so on. he'll start by clocking into his morning shift at 10:30, living through the hell which is lunch buzz. his friends, typically members of the aasa and maybe evie, will stop by after the lunch craze cools down at 3:30. they wait for sev to finish off and then hangout for whatever. sundays are a bit different. there are typically not a lot of social plans after work, but he does like visiting his parents with imogen.
✴︎ social activitiesif you're thinking parties and drinking, sev isn't one to be overly-excited about it. he'd still go, though, simple because his friends will be there. in his mind, their company might drastically improve the incredibly sweaty situation of drunk people and horrendously loud edm. since sev is still one year away from being in the legal drinking age, he has very little nightlife experience. he drinks occasionally, only if its a very private setting, where he knows nobody will snitch or do anything that gets him in trouble. this is often in exclusive house parties with his friends, or if imogen buys a new pack of grape soju and he happens to come across it while she's out. due to his lack of experience, sev has a preference for daylight activities. he doesn't actually like anything too heinous that they need to plan it out, but he likes simple things like meeting up to eat and maybe just walk around and sit somewhere to talk. he likes to do things that involve being attentive to the people/person he's with. some days, he just likes staying home and settling for a discord call.

ACCOMMODATION this is probably the lamest thing to say as a 20-year-old, but sev lives with his older sister, imogen. it's a two-bedroom apartment with one bathroom in the master bed (imogen's) and a bathroom outside for guests and sev. it has an open kitchen that spills onto the living room. the apartment is a 15 minute drive to campus, with sev often stealing imogen's car to get there since he doesn't have much to buy his own and she always works from home. sev used to live in the dorms in freshman year, but after the horrendous experience of living with six other guys and the monstrosity of a kitchen they had, he figured that moving out would be the best of his mental (and physical) health. at the moment, sev pays less than half of the rent due to student status and lack of full-time income, but while imogen is brutal, she's willing to let her little brother stay with her at a lesser expense until he gets sick of her.

BACKGROUND
evelyn moon is a sophomore at nyu, majoring in studio art. she was born in hawaii to two middle class parents and moved to new york city for college after saving up money from her career as a microinfluencer and freelance webtoon artist, as well as part-time work from here and then. she grew up as an only child, but with lots of her extended family living under the same roof. although she loves her life in hawaii, she moved to new york to experience a fast-paced metropolitan life with greater opportunities that can lead up to her ultimate dream: to become an animator and illustrator at a major company like disney or pixar.
