extra
— ❛ appearance: curly 3b hair that she usually leaves untouched, sunkissed skin and icy blue eyes. wears a blue band around her forehead if she needs to keep her hair out of her face as qilliqti don't really work for her hair type. thin and lean, not obviously muscular but you can see her pecs when she's exerting her strength. she does have abs from doing core workouts but they're not seen under the layers of clothing anyways. has a tattoo of "stay strong" in her mother's handwriting, lifted from a note. numerous faded scars over her body from training - her teacher was harsh.
— ❛ style : ahyoka is weirdly resistant to the cold, to the point you can still see her in tunics when her friends are already donning parkas. even when she does feel like it's cold enough for the thick coats, she likes to wear the mens' version of it as it's shorter and traps less heat. she can be seen in a long-sleeved tunic with baggy fur-trimmed leggings when it's colder but if not she wears a sleeveless tunic with sarashi around her knuckles. it's amusing to scan a crowd and see her dressing like it's summer when everyone else is bundled up. doesn't wear her mother's necklace even though it was salvaged, and has instead made it a charm that she hangs on her waist twenty four seven.
— ❛ personality :
intj 8w7 chaotic neutral choleric phlegmatic
her name is an urban legend among the children of the tribe, tall tales of her pulling off impossible pranks (true) and blasting the teacher away with her amazing powers (false, she did aim at the teacher but failed). it doesn't help that she's a rare sight in general, preferring to spend her time alone away from the community. when she does show up she always has a stoic expression set in stone and walks with her shoulders pulled back, her glare making everyone scurry away if their eyes meet.
it's like every word she says just has to be laced with cynicism and scorn, her short fuse easily exploding, meaning no one likes talking to her at all . she has a weirdly major problem with following the rules and seems to find joy in going against what other people say even if she knows that they're right. even ahyoka herself doesn't understand it either - why she has the urge to do the opposite of what should be done and why she acts on said urge all the time even though there's a small voice in her head telling her not to. there's teenage rebellion and then there's complete defiance, and she definitely falls in the latter section. sometimes, wohali reminds her that she needs the elders' guidance if she really wants to harness her powers and she'll only spit back that she can and will do just fine on her own (spoiler alert: she can't). the hardest pill for ahyoka to swallow is her pride, so if she actually apologises (with her head raised and eyes looking away) you know that she's genuinely sorry. no one knows why she keeps a fortress around herself and her emotions, and ahyoka plans to keep it that way. her curt answers to questions give away nothing and if she had instagram, it'd be an empty account that has no posts. no icons, but views every story you post. she would also like a really, really old pic of yours and then kick herself for her callousness. it's a wonder why she hasn't accidentally killed herself or wohali yet.
to most, ahyoka is what they see, a big giant ball of fire (ironic). what they don't see, however, is how she's trying follow her dreams. she pulls away from the community so she can hone her skills alone, partly because she's embarrassed, partly because she knows she has no control and doesn't want to injure people. one of the things wohali admires (but won't say out loud) is how ahyoka has a very obvious direction and has always known what she wants to do with her life, even if he thinks she's being slightly unrealistic. she has her own set of ideals and adheres strictly to them even if every other person is telling her not to. she believes that what she's doing is for the good of everyone and does not plan on shying away from her goals before they're achieved. if you paid a little bit more attention to her instead of looking away, you'd see ahyoka grabbing the shirt of a kid running past to stop him from tripping over a rock or silently healing a child's scrape by pretending she's changing sitting positions. however, her kindness is mostly reserved for children, and she still tends to glare at the elders as they walk past. despite her brash personality, she's the one who can remain calm in urgent situations (perhaps because urgency is her constant mode) and is somehow always able to think of something to deal with the problem at hand, be it a practical or creative solution. she's here to make change, and nothing will stand in her way.
— ❛ background : it was pretty obvious ahyoka was an eerily talented waterbender when she started playing with her tears as a baby. the elders jumped at the chance to nurture a great warrior, so most of ahyoka's childhood memories contain nothing but training. it was hard and sometimes she'd throw a fit, but the elders would reassure her that they were doing it for her protection. imagine how you could protect your family and the rest of the tribe, they'd say, patting her head and coaxing her to continue training. so she soldiered on, her mother's gentle smiles and her father's warm hugs in her mind.
until the day they didn't come back. her father was a talented waterbender and her mother often accompanied him as a healer to battles. the day remains vivid in her memories: she waited as other parents returned, enveloping their children in hugs. the only person that came to her was her mentor, and ahyoka understood what happened. her wails echoed through the tribe, and after that she just changed. she saw no meaning in training anymore, since she had nothing she wanted to protect. she felt lied to - what happened to utmost protection and safety if waterbenders learned to control and harness their powers? her father did, and he was gone.
that was the day she shut herself out from the rest of the community. she would look at the worried faces of the elders and see nothing but betrayal. she saw no hope in the war, no hope in becoming stronger, no hope at all.
until wohali.
trivia
▪ ― likes : muted colours, the sound of rainfall pattering on her tent, petrichor, two-headed fish soup, five-flavour soup, cold weather.
▪ ― dislikes : kale cookies, seal jerkey, wine, festivals, the colours the fire nation wear, complete silence, initimacy (she claims).
her name means bringer of happiness in cherokee.
bites her nails frequently. weirdly eats plain rice before the side dishes, in her right cheek when she's annoyed.
she enjoys being around children and can't help but smile when they're being their usual bumbling selves, but can't imagine having any children of her own. the thought of caring for a small, fragile being terrifies her. she does want to get married though, primarily because her parents were a very loving couple.
didn't really pay attention in the basic reading and writing classes as a child and was let off as everyone knew of her waterbending skills. right now she's pretty bad at reading and will glare at anyone who asks her to write. her handwriting is like a child's. large letters that run off the lines and terrible spelling. basically chicken scrawl.
cannot cook. tried once and became very thankful she was a waterbender.
is shockingly stingy. if she buys things she'll try to get the best deal despite having a decent fortune left behind by her parents. argues that she wants to have lots of money in case an emergency requires a large amount.
falls asleep quickly but wakes up just as easily.
has a really, really sensitive nose and can smell odours from a long distance away. if she asks "what's that smell?", you stop and listen.
will smack you if you try to touch her.
Wohali; best friends (?)
both would be lying if they didn't harbour feelings for each other, but they also know that the timing isn't very right. ahyoka has goals she wants to finish before placing her mind anywhere else and wohali is a (very burly) chef for the community. they both have responsibilities that get in the way.
the two are a weird combination that don't really make sense to other people. yyn chatters endlessly while ahyoka harbours the most annoyed expression on her face, but she's actually listening. most of the time, at least. sometimes yyn's endless energy does tick her off and she'll ask for a break from walking so she can get some alone time and recharge, but for the most part she's happy she doesn't have to be alone.
the two don't talk anymore except subtle nods when they come across each other. ahyoka still harbours anger towards qaletaqa even though she knows it's not her fault and the older woman understands that. she just wishes that someday her favourite disciple will open up to her again.
▪ ― physical combat : she was also trained in physical combat as a child and can definitely hold her own in a fight against other men in the water tribe. would win anyone untrained but knows that she would lose to trained assassins or warriors. doesn't stop her from trying though.
▪ ― healing : her mother taught her some healing so she could help herself during training. she's not that good and can only heal small wounds.
▪ ― bloodbending : the thing is, ahyoka's not sure if she can actually do it or not. the one instance it happened was when she was focusing really hard and also feeling really angry at her parents' deaths. wohali, who was next to her, commented that he felt a sudden pull on his arm. it has never happened since and she's starting to think the boy only had a muscle spasm. time will tell.
she does. she wants to help end it but as much as she shows outward confidence in her abilities, she knows she's not there yet. her best bet is to help the avatar and also grow stronger on the way.
while the no is an honest answer because yyn is still green and the fire nation remains immensely powerful, she hopes to god that it ends quickly. she doesn't want to lose any other people.
this answer remained true until she met yyn. now she believes that the as long as the avatar can help and wants to restore peace, she doesn't care which nation they belong to.
wow this was really, really rushed lmao. I think some comedic scenes of ahyoka butchering pronunciations and trying to get a good deal at markets would be fun! also, hover over icons for faceclaims. feel free to ask any questions because this app definitely did not end up as in-depth as I planned it to be. :(
