BACKGROUND
2001 → 'welcome to the world, sunflower!'

 

ahn jihyo made her entrance into the world as the only child of kim minseo and ahn jihoon. the apple of their eye after so many failed tries, they were destined to adore and push jihyo to be the best that she could be -- or so they wanted.

 

2006 → 'do i have to do this?'

 

jihyo stepped foot into her first gymnastics class. she was the kid in the class that was very hesitant to try anything, but with push from her instructor, mrs. lee, she found every class all the more enjoyable. this year, she'd also find her favorite song at the tender age of 5 -- u by super junior. whenever she got a glimpse of a music show or music video program that would play, she'd attempt to replicate the moves. much to her parents dismay, since they wanted her to be a gymnast of the highest level, and felt a 5-year-old should have her focus solely on learning how to do a front roll over.

 

2011 → 'this is starting to get boring...'

 

jihyo is one of the best child-gymnasts in her gym, the next gym, and maybe the next gym over. through each competition she's entered, she's come out with no less than first place -- of course, with the help of her loving, pushing, nagging, parents. she was at practice every day after school, and practiced at home, when she should have been resting. she was learning new skills every week, and while she was mastering them, she was not at all having a good time. but, her parents didn't let her quit; as much as 10-year-old jihyo begged, she was still going to gymnastics.

 

2016 → 'i'm bored.'

 

15 year-old jihyo is still one of the top youth gymnasts. her scores are perfect or near perfect, her schedule only consists of school and gymnastics, including the weekends, and she's still the epitome of burnt out. day after day, running beams and tumbling; day after day, running to keep her stamina up. she had begged her parents at this point to stop, but was met with deaf ears and an argument that told her, per her father, "over my dead body will you no longer compete".

 

2017 → 'you're almost an olympian, baby!'

 

the year of jihyo's rebellion. she was supposed to compete for a spot on the korean national gymnastics team and become an olympian -- the honest to god, last thing on jihyo's mind. she had no dreams of being an olympian. while she was sure she would qualify and would make the team, it wasn't her heart. it wasn't her mind. she knew for sure, she was not supposed to be an olympian. in her time when she would study, she would spend time scrolling on twitter, finding new music by red velvet, nct127, girl's day, oh my girl, exo -- you name it, it was probably in her playlist. during the hours she should've been sleeping, she was learning choreography; 'it's not that hard, it's just like floor routines'.

 

2019 → 'mom, dad, i don't want to do gymnastics anymore. i want to dance. i'm not asking you, i'm telling you.'

 

the hardest conversation jihyo had to tell her parents. after an ankle injury that never seemed to get better no matter how much they pushed her, jihyo had finally had enough; she was not a gymnast anymore. she didn't want to be a gymnast anymore. she was tired of the schedule. she was tired of training to be an olympian; she hadn't even qualified the first two times, and she wasn't about to try again. to say her father and mother flipped their lids was an understatement, and led to jihyo staying with her grandmother in seoul.

 

2020 → 'what's girl's zone?'

 

scrolling on instagram during lunch with her friend, jihyo came across a post about girl's zone. in her mind, what was the worst that could happen? being told no? exactly. so, she and her best friend, narae, put together an audition tape of her dancing. as she was a gymnast and a popular one at that, she didn't think she would get in; absolutely not. yet, the next thing she knew, she had a duffel bag on her shoulder and she was signing a contract under sm entertainment as a trainee.
