Dakila first thought that his duty in life was to participate in the great war and bring victory in honor of his tribe. He thought the war is noble and necessary but he clearly underestimated its horrors. After experiencing the harsh reality of war first-hand, such as having to kill people and witness people being killed, it left Dakila with severe psychological trauma that was further exacerbated by the death of his parents. He then swore to himself that he wouldn't be the reason for the death of another. After discovering his healing abilities, he decided that he'll save lives instead of taking them. When Dakila meets Yyn, someone who has only looked at the war from the perspective of her nation, he'll open her eyes to how the war has affected the other nations through his own experiences and convince her that the Fire Nation winning the war wouldn't lead to the betterment of everyone's lives. It also wouldn't hurt (pun intended) to have a healer on board, either.
YEYING

Yeying, a wealthy and ignorant noble in the Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se. Unaware of the war and the brainwashing of the city's residents, and how she herself had been unwittingly brainwashed while growing up. Wholeheartedly believing that the Dai Li are the protectors of Ba Sing Se's cultural heritage and that her father's work is for the purpose of keeping peace and order in the city, Yeying felt her world crashing down on her when she learned the truth. Forced to choose between her loyalty and morality, Yeying chose the former, though not without regret. When the Avatar and her team arrive at Ba Sing Se, Yeying is once again driven into a corner and forced to make a decision. Will the choice she makes this time be the right one?
