princess yunshu of the second rank was brought up in the forbidden city under the utmost care of her benevolent mother and the palace maids. from a young age, she was taught both manners and arts, such as chinese literature and calligraphy, guqin, dancing, embroidery, painting and weiqi. as the eldest imperial princess, she has to set a role model for her younger siblings, so she has to be on her best behaviour everywhere she goes.

as princess yunshu of the second rank grows older, her oustanding visuals and excellent character started to become the talk of the town as news of this pristine princess travelled far and wide. the elders in the forbidden city all adored this fine lady and noble families all wished to have her as a daughter-in-law. hence, she became the ideal wife candidate and the highly sought-after bachelorette. even before she was of marriagable age, there were already suitors lining up, vying for her hand in marriage after she turns eighteen.

despite all the attention she was receiving even when she has barely shown her face out in public, princess yunshu of the second rank remained humble, never forgetting what was taught to her at a young age. imperial consort yu has always emphasised to her that the duties of an imperial princess is to serve her people with a humble heart no matter where she goes, and never be wavered by temptations.

in her free time, princess yunshu of the second rank continued to dabble in the arts, faring considerably well in them, considering her hardworking nature. out of all the arts she had to learn as a princess, she took an immediate liking to embroidery. this was because her own mother was excellent in that too, which ended up being a key factor in capturing the heart of the emperor. so whenever princess yunshu of the second rank manages to sew a masterpiece she calls her own, she would show off to her mother first, to which imperial consort yu will shower her with words of praises. it was also her immaculate image and embroidery skills that caught the eyes of the korea queen, queen sujeong, when she visited the great qing during autumn 1828.

shortly after queen sujeong returned back to the korea empire, news of the engagement between princess yunshu of the second rank and the second prince of the imperial house of kim were released in spring 1829. many suitors' hearts were crushed by the news. even the princess, herself, was stunned when she knelt down and received the decree from the head eunuch. although she knew that one day she would be married off into another noble family in the great qing, never did she expect to be wedded off to such a far away country. that night was filled with grievances as she cried in the arms of imperial consort yu, asking her mother if she really have to leave the great qing for korea in the near future. this marked the first time the princess acted out of accordance with the usual protocol of being an imperial princess.

her mother's words seems to have struck a chord with her as princess yunshu of the second rank hurriedly wiped away her tears. her mother was right. she has no right to kick up a fuss, because she is the great qing's princess at birth, her everything belongs to the great qing. she has responsibilities to fulfil, and right now, her duty was to be that peace treaty between the great qing and korea. as a princess, she has to be the emperor's courtier first, before the emperor's daughter. it did take a while for her to digest this piece of news but very soon the optimistic lady was back on her feet, preparing herself for the impending royal wedding.

the 1831 christmas gala of the korea empire was the grandest of all because it was also the well-anticipated wedding of prince juhwan and the great qing's princess yunshu of the second rank. the twenty-one year old bride made an impressive entrance into the high society off season, catching heads for her sweet and affable counternance. news publications and tabloids alike all had a big day during this festive season, with endless publications and speculations about the royal family's first foreign bride in centuries.

the summer of 1832 marked the official debut of princess yiyeong into the high society as she entered her first season with prince juhwan as a newly-wed couple. all eyes were on her as many nobles wondered what could this manchu foreigner bring to the royal table. princess yiyeong did not disappoint as she participated regularly in charity events and social balls, carefully fulfilling all the duties of the wife of a korean prince, so as not to bring shame to both the korea empire and the great qing. along with her husband, princess yiyeong reside in the second prince manor after she was married.

with the new social season looming near, many can't help to wonder after one and a half years of marriage, would there be any joyous news of a new addition into the royal family?

"yes, mother," yiyeong replied with a small smile, "the second prince has been nothing but good to me."

given before, yiyeong would say that queen sujeong is her role model. however, after figuring out the queen's hidden schemes to prevent prince juhwan from becoming king with included using and manipulating her, yiyeong now doesn't know how to feel towards the queen anymore.

she still looks up to queen sujeong for her capability but humanity-wise, yiyeong is tremendously disappointed. even though she has witnessed or be involved in numerous different kinds of palace schemes, especially back in her home country, it still hurts to embroiled in one, especially in a foreign country where she's considered as an outsider.

first off, the whole marriage had been part of queen sujeong's greater plans. for centuries, the king's wife of joseon has always been a korean noble lady so it was difficult to gauge the public's response to a foreign queen. with juhwan marrying a manchu princess, it no doubt reduced the chances of the second prince from being appointed as the country's king, yet at the same time strengthened the ties between joseon and the great qing. what a great way to kill two birds with one stone.

then came the appointment of lady minah as yiyeong's lady-in-waiting. yiyeong immediately knew that things weren't that simple when the queen herself appointed a new money's daughter with poor reputation as her lady-in-waiting. it was as if the queen wanted to tarnish her reputation as well with such an arrangement despite holding high regards for yiyeong.

as queen sujeong still treated yiyeong very well as if she was her daughter and often pamper her with expensive gifts, yiyeong can't possibly hate queen sujeong. so yiyeong has decided: she will just respect queen sujeong like how a daughter-in-law would treat her mother-in-law and how an employee would treat their boss.

"greetings, your royal highness," yiyeong curtsied in reply, instantly recognising the crown prince who had appeared many times in those noble magazines, despite having not met him formally. "what brings you over to the second prince manor? prince juhwan is out."

"i know," juwon laughed carelessly, as he walked into the pavilion where yiyeong at, "of course, my dear brother will be out fulfilling his royal duties again, at this timing."

seeing the confused look on yiyeong's face, juwon smirked harder. "as to why i'm here, i was just curious about my dear sister-in-law so i came to visit."

"me? why would the crown prince take notice of a married woman, especially when she's the wife of your brother?" yiyeong carefully asked.

"yes, you." juwon confirmed. "of course i would be curious about my dear sister-in-law who was originally bethrothed to me but our dear mother suddenly thinks that it'll be a better idea to give you to my younger brother."

"perhaps mother has better marriage plans for your royal highness. after all, your royal highness is going to be the next king of joseon and marriage is no child's play." yiyeong lightly answered with a smile on her face.

initially, yiyeong was flustered and appalled by juwon's shameless flirts thrown at every lady, even at a married woman like herself. but soon, she realised that he actually meant no harm. that's just his cheeky way of talking to ~~pretty~~ ladies, so she just tunes out to his flirts and lets him be.

surprisingly, they share a pretty cool relationship despite the fact that she was supposed to be his wife instead of prince juhwan's. yiyeong was caught off guard by his comment that fine afternoon when he unceremoniously dropped by the second prince manor unannounced, so she pretended that she hadn't heard him at all. and even though juwon is infamously known for his player-ways, he still know his boundaries and would never touch a married woman, least to say his brother's wife. after all, the kim brothers are super tight buddies.

their relationship has developed into much of a brother-sister kinship, with juwon always joking around, asking about juhwan's bed skills and yiyeong retaliating back, poking fun at his old, unmarried arse.

"dongqing! what are you doing here?" yiyeong exclaimed softly in her mother tongue, expressing her astonishment while still maintaining her poise.

"the second prince of the imperial house of kim sent someone to me to come serve you, expressing that your royal highness is alone in the imperial estate and has yet to fully accustomed to the joseon practices," dongqing said, teary-eyed, "dongqing finally gets to meet you, princess. i've missed you so much, princess!"

the twenty-year-old dongqing is not only yiyeong's personal attendant back in the great qing but also her childhood friend. despite not born noble, dongqing and yiyeong share a very close friendship as they grew up, played and even bathed together when they were little children. dongqing is the cherubic younger sister that yiyeong dotes and cherishes.

dongqing is fiercely loyal to her princess and would guard yiyeong to the best of her abilities. she is not afraid to rebut people who have offended yiyeong and would always take her princess's side no matter what. yiyeong often finds it amusing to see fumes rising out the small-sized girl's ears after hearing disrespectful remarks thrown at yiyeong. a sensible girl who have yiyeong's likes and dislikes memorised by heart, dongqing is probably the only one who knows yiyeong inside out. hence yiyeong is forever grateful to juhwan when he sent people to bring dongqing to accompany her.
