APPEARANCE Jojeong's body is littered with all kinds of scars. His face had been spared for the most part, except for two; one that starts at the right side of his forehead and continues posteriorly beyond his hairline and a less noticeable white scar is at his lower left jaw. The former is usually hidden by strands of hair that fall from his middle parting. His face is clean shaven.

The most gruesome of his wounds is at his right shoulder which had been hit by a bullet two and a half years prior. The recovery had complications to the point most of his shoulder consists of scar tissue now, raised and uneven and an violet-reddish color. It wasn't the only time a bullet had hit him, but it was the one that caused by far most damage, the one on his thigh penetrated just muscle and healed easily and so did those which only grazed him.

At a height of 1,84cm, he's often the tallest man in the room. He has an average build, perhaps a bit on the skinny side and even though he lost a lot of muscle mass in the past years it's not too obvious due to his broad shouldered frame. His skin's undertone is slightly darker than the average Korean and he tans easily but since he mostly stayed indoors in the last few years, his complexion started to look pasty.

As a former army man Jojeong's posture is impeccable. His movements always have a purpose, he doesn't fidget or touch his hair idly. His expressions are miniscule, a lift of his mouth corners in amusement or a widening of his eyes in surprise, just enough to show the state of his feelings and pass as normal without spending more energy than strictly necessary. It's as if his body is working as efficiently as possible and  gives him an appearance of calm and self-assuredness.

WARDROBE At the beginning of the season, Jojeong wears his old military uniform on every formal occasion. He feels most comfortable in the comparably coarse material, for most of his life he had been known as an army man by the high society so that the lack of uniform makes him feel out of his element. The silk and velvet of the wealthy just feel foreign on his skin, as if he was dressed in someone else's clothes. The uniform is black which reveals him belonging to the cavalery. It has a buff collar with a red patch and golden braid, depicting a field surrounded by yellow leaf. His shoulder boards depict a crown and two crossed batons with laurels in the background, the insignia of his former rank as a field marshall. His cufflinks possess three studs and are ornamented with golden braid as well. He has multiple sets that he wears interchangeably.

Eunjoo ordered to pack some of his formal wear on their journey to the capital and she tries to convince him time after time to change his wardrobe for one of the balls. If he’s in a good mood, there might be a time she’ll be successful and he’ll show up in a  two piece suit (a waistcoat is too much to ask for, he’d get a heatstroke in the sun!), in a not too bold color with nicely matched shoes, cufflinks, a tie and whatever else belongs to a well-picked outfit.

In less formal situations, Jojeong can be seen wearing simple linen or cotton clothes, a white, unassuming button up or loose pants that he fastens on his waist with a cord. Those are not appropriate for his rank and his staff tries their best to convince him to switch to a finer dress before anyone notices the faux-pas.

"It's admirable that he takes his new title so seriously. But I wished he'd find a balance between what he needs to do and what he wants to do."
— the person who said it

PERSONALITY Honorable, weary, fair-minded, introverted, kind, progressive, quiet,  protective, calculated, responsible, apprehensive, aware of his surroundings,
 ISTJ-T, gryffindor, temperament: melancholic

The pillar of everything that defines Jojeong as a person is honor. For him, nothing matters more than thinking and acting in an honorable way. Jojeong has a strong moral compass and he doesn't stray from his values. And sometimes his values bring him into a conflict - as the last male heir he must honor the continuation of the Bae house by marrying and continuing the family line though at the same time it feels dishonourable to do that when at his core he would rather live in solitude.

He feels as if he had lived the brightest days of his life already and his story should have ended with his move back close to his childhood home to spend his last days hunting, fishing and reminiscing the bittersweet memories. As the third son, Jojeong hadn't been prepared to rule the dukedom. There are too many responsibilities he was never trained for,  and if women were accepted as leaders, he'd pawn off the estate to Eunjoo in a heartbeat. He's just tired.  All the people who had mattered the most either left or betrayed him (or are bound to leave soon) and he's at a point where he'd rather not invest feelings and time in someone just to end up alone again.

When he was young, he wanted to be a hero and protect people.  He gave up on the first part but the latter is still ingrained in him, when he sees someone in a struggle he wants to reach out a hand. His sister thinks he's too nice to be a lord - some money to a beggar here, a donation to an orphan house there, and  the funds of Gyeonggi-do are halved in order to help the poor and needy. This kindness can’t be found in regards to people he regards as dishonorable, as he can be ruthless in his ventures to seek vengeance. Even if his behaviour causes bad blood, he is assured of his rank, family status and the knowledge that not many have the power to defy him and uses it to cause a quantum of justice.

The dukedom of Gyeonggi was open-minded in comparison to other noble families and Jojeong certainly shared the sentiment. He doesn't care what someone does as long as their behavior doesn't inconvenience anyone else. That’s one of the reason why Jojeong likes to keep his distance from other nobility, society at court offers narrow views on what’s virtuous and desirable and Jojeong finds them stifling. One lord or lady alone can often be a pleasant companion however put them all together and they create a hivemind he’d rather avoid if possible.

Jojeong can memorize faces and names independently but matching them is not his forte. He tries to keep up appearances still socializing drains him, his thought processes slow down in a cloud of mismatched perfumes and body odors, gaudy fabrics that tire out his eyes and same old conversation topics. He made a list with people whose connections are important or profitable to Gyeonggi and does his best to keep up the ties with them yet doesn’t go out of his way to converse with people unless they pique his personal interest. At his rank he doesn't need to entertain the lords anyway, they usually swarm around him on their own. If the conversation bores him, he doesn't make a large effort to remember someone. His generosity reaches the poor but rarely the lower nobility trying to shoehorn their way into more power. Ever since he came to power people think of him as polite although very introverted. His dedication to the nation by his service gives him a likeability factor nevertheless he often sticks to the sidelines and shows little expressiveness, most are not sure what to expect from him.

He knows the rumor mill at court keeps spinning and under other circumstances he couldn’t care less what it says except now he has to think about his people first. He has to think how far he can go, which bridges he can burn and who are the few people he needs to butter up. Speaking his mind is rarely worth hundreds of livelihoods in his dukedom and while he is aware of his extra leeway brought onto him by his standing, he knows he has to assimilate his actions to a certain degree in order to strengthen ties to the right people. That’s also why he reprimands Eunjoo for behaviour he wouldn’t mind in the Bae estate.

At this point Jojeong has come to terms with the fact that this is not the life he wants to live, yet the only life his honor accepts.

BACKGROUND Jojeong never thought that he would be the one who would once inherit the dukedom  of Gyeonggi.

As the third son and the fourth of five children of the duke of Gyeonggi, the probability of that scenario was low. His childhood had been happy - he played in the fields until nightfall, excelled at learning how to fight and did had more freedom than his other siblings. He wasn't pressured to do well in his studies like brothers or learn how to embroider like his sisters. His parents' marriage wasn't one of love, but one with mutual respect and even though Hyunjeong and Dongjeong often played pranks on him, they were never mean enough to seriously hurt him. The sibling Jojeong was closest to was his sister Sujeong however, whose quick mind and confidence he always admired and who helped to raise him.

As one of the dukedoms at the North Korean border, Gyeonggi had a lot of interactions with their neighbouring country. When Jojeong was in his teens, relations became increasingly tense when attacks on both sides of the border were observed, with each country blaming the other. Justice seeking and patriotic, Jojeong decided to enlist in the military at age 17 in order to protect his home country if needed. The idea that his parents give him a small fleck of land to manage did not seem appealing to him, he'd rather become a hero.

Physically very strong, well-educated and of noble origin, Jojeong steadily climbed up the ranks in the cavalary branch of the Korean army. When their allies in the Thai government requested for military help against invaders, Jojeong fought in the front lines. When Japan sent for support during their civil war, he was on the first ship to Tokyo. During that time, Jojeong scarcely kept contact with his family. Letters needed months to travel from the war zone to Gyeonggi, and at the time they did, Jojeong's battalion had already advanced to another location. So he lost communication and often heard of news months or years later. He found out that Sujeong became queen when he came back home from a battle and people congratulated him for the advantageous match. Months passed before he was informed that Ahjeong cut off contact with everyone to join a nunnery or when Dongjeong died falling off a rabid horse. He never married because he didn't have a place to call home, he travelled from mission to mission. His elderly parents kept asking him to stay for a while longer but he was restless, there were always new endavours piling up, new people who needed his help against their enemies.

The big turning point was the winter of 1930/31. The tensions of South and North had worsened over the years and Jojeong had been sent to Linjiang to fight North Korea at the Chinese border. The summer before the people suffered from a drought and the winter had been an extraordinarily cold one so the harvest was meager. The soldiers had an agreement with the locals regarding their supplement, however those rations were small and hunger became a constant in their lives. Jojeong tried to keep his men in line but it was fruitless - almost every day there was another complaint about soldiers stealing food, slaughtering cattle for meat and breaking into repositories to empty them. He tried his best to stop it and make amends, punishing anyone who was caught  harshly.  But most times the culprit was unknown and his vengeance made him unpopular among his own people. Day after day the men that once blindly followed him became more revolting against his pledge to bring justice.

„We would be better off if you insolent soldiers were gone,“ a local elder spat into his face when rode down to the village to offer his horse and apologize on behalf of his army „because of you, our children have to starve!“ That encounter made him question his choices. When he battled youths whose faces had barely sprouted the first wisps of a beard yet, when he shut down rebellions against a neighbour-countries' monarchy, had he always done the right thing? Jojeong wasn’t sure if he was the hero he’d dreamed to be. Looking at his men, most of them seemed rather like villains.

The situation reached it's peak in February. Jojeong had been enraged with the news of another break in, when his second in command stepped forward and stated that if they were to die in this war, their last days wouldn't be filled with famine. The situation became heated, the other general threatening to take over control of the soldiers if Jojeong didn't find another way to fill their stomachs and in the end, Jojeong realized that he had not enough backing to stabilize his position unless he challenged the other to a duel until the first draw of blood. The referee counted down, and before Jojeong was fully turned around, he was hit by an agonizin pain. The next few weeks passed in a blur of fever and chills. When he finally regained consciousness, a medic told him that due to infection the damage would be permanent. The injury put an end to his career and his second had taken over control and sent for Jojeong to be taken back to the homeland.

He came back to South Korea just to find out that his parents had both passed away from a lung infection, his mother's last words wishing for his well-being. Jojeong was mad at himself. His last two and a half decades were a waste, his idealizations of the military crushed, his friendships with the other soliders marred by their betrayal. He was doing perhaps more bad then good in this world and leaving a trail of blood in his wake. He stayed for a few weeks in the capital, treated for his wound by his sister's personal doctors. But everything felt wrong. The fabrics were wrong, all too light and feathery on his skin, like little crawling bugs, the touch barely noticable and unsteady. He detested the triviality of the conversations, the superficiality, the fake smiles and court intrigues. The nobles were too nosy, asking too many questions about his battles and wounds and his plans for the future. When he didn't give them a satisfactory answer, they came up with their own theories. The lords and ladies made a fuss of the simplest things, while their people were dying.

In the end he returned to Gyeonggi. He spend a few months cooped up in his wing of the estate but the gossip around him and the many questions about his whereabaouts all these years became too much. Therefore he then settled down in a cottage that was used by his family as a resort while hunting at a desolate place in the forest. For over a year, he interacted with few and lived self-sufficiently, hunting his own food and fishing, collecting firewood, planting vegetables, cooking and bathing in the nearby river. One day, messengers reached him. The knights of his brother until his brother met his untimely death due unforseen ilness. Jojeong knew that he had been the next male heir but his brother had been a beacon of health and so he had delegated that thought to the back of his mind. Jojeong didn't want to have the burden of a dukeship, the responsibility over these subjects, didn't want to be forced to socialize and keep up friendly relations and he surely didn't want to marry and produce an heir. But above anything else, and far above his own desires, he places honour and his honour demanded to respect the family legacy which was so important to his ancestors and fulfill his duties as the new duke of Gyeonggi.

So he spends hours and hours learning about his province, studying papers and maintaining the infrastructure with the help of his sister. And when the next season was announced, he decided to participate for the first time in his life along his brother's daughter, trying to find someone to start a family with...

TRIVIA

His favorite season is autumn.

Prefers mountains over the seaside.

He has a good blood circulation and runs rather warm. Doesn't have problems with the cold but suffers on very warm summer days.

He enjoys opera music.

He likes simple meals best. A deer that he shot himself with home-grown vegetables and potatoes is the most delicious meal for him, he prefers Koreas native cuisine to all the foreign spices and receipes. Prefers to eat without sauces and to not use too many ingredients.

Has frequent headaches, reason unknown. He knows that it is triggered by his stress levels and sometimes, really obnoxious scents such as very strong perfumes.

He likes being around large dogs and horses and usually those animals also like him. Has a lot of knowlegde regarding the latter, notices when something is off about a horse and as a former cavalry man, he is an exceptional horseback rider.

When he still had free time, he liked to occupy himself with domestic work and crafting. He likes working towards a tangible goal or outcome, creating things from scratch that can be useful in his everyday life. He had a small patch of garden where he planted his own vegetables, he prepared cooked them along with the fish or hunt he caught, he made blankets of the fur and carpented a few wobbly pieces of furniture. He doesn't have a green thumb and is neither a cooking nor a artistic talent but he likes this self-reliant lifestyle.

Even though he lost the romantic outlook of his youth, he still thinks marriage as something sacred - sacred enough that he'd rather not do it. Because if he’d go through with that, he’d do it properly and place his families’ needs above his own and he doesn’t want that commitment.

Jojeong never told anyone how exactly he got his shoulder injury and as far as anyone knows he got it in battle. Various rumors about it persists, among them also the true story, but most of the soliders who withnessed the incident try to hide the truth, afraid that the queen would punish them for disrespecting her brothers' orders.

Used to be a very good archer and was passionate about that hobby  in the past but in the recent years his eyes have become a bit nearsighted, not enough that it would affect him in everyday life but the target lines are now too blurry to hit bullseye confidently.

He still has pain in his right shoulder from the accident. It hurts when he makes the wrong kind of arm movements, especially when he lifts his arm up to shoulder-height or above. An observant person would notice that he avoids too much movement of that shoulder and arm but since he doesn't have a lot of body language in general, it  goes unnoticed by most. He doesn't want to bring too much attention to it and eats, greets, etc normally even if it hurts sometimes.

RELATIONSHIPS

Queen Sujeong / Imperial House of Kim / older sister / a volatile 7
— Twenty years ago, they were a family of seven people. Now, she and him are the only ones left.
Jojeong is frustrated because she cares about him but she doesn't care about his opinions. The fact that she's the only one left from his childhood makes him want to be closer to her, but half of the time he reaches out, he feels like he gets burned again. Jojeong had made the mistake to open up about his weariness regarding his inheritance at their brother's funeral, and Sujeong took that rather badly. She made clear that she expects him to find peace in ruling - it's their families' heirloom and she won't let it be ruined because he can't reign in his moods. She helped him a lot since he came to power, sent advisors and support he's very grateful for. At the same time she's dismissive of his feelings and meddles in his business which makes him furious.
On Sujeong's perspective, she cares about him a lot. She cares so much that only few people exists whom she prioritizes more (maybe only Juwon, it's up to what you planned). But she believes that Jojeong is caught up in self-pity and his current mentality can't be this fragile if he wants to rule their childhood home. Therefore she gives him some tough love in hopes that he snaps out of it and returns to the person he was when they were young. Empathy isn't her strong suit and if he refuses to act like a duke, she rather decides herself whats best for him. After all, she was born as a Bae too, and she refuses to let down her families' legacy.

Tensions are high, but they are this way because both of them care and wished better for each other.

Bae Hyunjeong / House of Bae / brother (recently deceased)  / 6.5
— description of their interactions go here.
They had a friendly relationship but they weren't outstandingly close. Hyunjeong was kind and non-judgmental but at the same time, their relationship was also somewhat superficial. Whenever Jojeong asked, Hyunjeong answered that he was great, everything was fine and since Jojeong didn't want to always be the one to bring the mood down with his less than optimistic views/outlook/experiences, he stopped talking to him about anything substantial. He felt more connected to his young niece, lady Eunjoo.
Nonetheless Hyunjeong was a great duke. He was the kind of man that was charismatic and loved by his people and he gouverned his dukedom rather well. Stepping into his footsteps isn't easy, especially since his people don't really know or trust him as he'd been absent for 25 years.

Bae Eunjoo / House of Bae  / niece / 7
— Jojeong loves her but she makes him very worried. With the social season coming up, he's primarily concerned that she'll marry the wrong man - with her placing family above everything else, she would be crushed if her future husband turns out to be a scumbag. Even if he knows she is of age and a marriage would be profitable for her (especially now that everyone has her fathers' importance still fresh in their minds), he can't stop agonizing about sending her away to live with a random lord they barely know. Few places in the Korean high society give women as much freedom as their family had and Jojeong is afraid she grew up too sheltered to see reality. He also worries about her being adventurous because he has made a lot of ugly experiences and he rather wants his young niece to be at a safe place instead of running straight into a potentially dangerous situation.
Many of her behaviours, such as her bluntness, are also unwelcome at court and he tries to make her act more like a lady of her standing, somewhat conscious of the picture they portray to the high society. The fact that her mother left her side makes him uneasy too since by default he became the most parental figure around and it's an added responsability.
Eunjoo is not too fazed by all of this. Jojeong does not hold much authority over her because she knows him as the friendly but withdrawn uncle he was when he came back from war, not as a duke or ruler, and so she pays little importance to his reprimands. Instead she views him more as an ally and tries to get him out of his comfort zone. She invites him to join more outings and go out more and tries to arrange plans for him regarding events she believes he could enjoy, like hunting parties. Eunjoo also nags about his wardrobe and attempts to help him to a more fashionable style, an effort that fares not much better than his lectures, at least in the beginning.

Kim Juwon  / Crown Prince of the Kim family / not sure if nephew? /  4
—When Juwon grew up, Jojeong met him only every two years or so, therefore there was never a particularly strong bond between the two of them even though they were related. Jojeong admittedly doesn't like Juwon much, since he heard of the rumors and he has a rather low opinion on men who have their way around, especially in times where the clap has become a serious medical issue. He doesn't know if the crown prince lures those young women with any promises or not but in his army time he learned that 8-9/10 men with this lifestyle were not too pleasant company. Questioning the rumors hasn’t crossed his mind so far and his disdain comes from a place of protectiveness towards the girls. He keeps his aversion to himself, he prefers to keep his interactions with the prince to a minimum but when he does, he is polite and friendly to the future ruler.
