is joining DKML!

who the hell is this part-time worker who looks like he wants to be anywhere but dkml?

it's aspiring screenwriter kim jihoon, who's an assistant writer for the notorious writer moon. because he's the newbie (at age thirty-four) of the team, the task of field research for their newest drama falls into his hands... and it leads him to dkml.
ACT 1, SCENE 1.
Name 김지훈 kim jihoon.
nicknames
hoon only two people call him this: his mother and writer moon. it's endearing when his mother does it; it's the bane of jihoon's professional existence when writer moon does. after all, the writer calls all his other assistant writers their proper names. jihoon is just easy to pick on because he's the newbie.
others writer kim, newbie (courtesy of writer moon), anything relating to his age ("grandpa jihoon", "old man", "kkondae").
DOB & AGE november 1st, 34 y/o.
ethnicity korean.

STATURE 183 cm & 77 kg
Appearance lanky and a bit awkward on his feet, jihoon spends his days either glued in front of his computer or surrounded by bustling life. when he's working towards a deadline, he'll hide his likely greasy and unkempt hair under a baseball cap. on days where he has to look presentable (see: days he commutes to dkml) he makes sure to clean up and change before he leaves the house. his years as a perpetual newbie in the industry has taught him to carry himself tall - after all, fake it till you make it - and he's often been mistaken for a main writer by company employees.
Fashion like his appearance, jihoon's fashion style is split between days at the studio and days at the cafe. on studio days he doesn't bother dressing up unless he has a meeting with a sponsor. the studio atmosphere is quite laid-back, with all the assistant writers in hoodies and baggy-eyed. jihoon is always thrown a little by the level of grooming that those at dkml go to; after seeing the picture-perfect outfits of many of his dkml colleagues, he's garnered a sizeable stack of semi-formal shirts that he can pair with dark slacks or jeans to match the rest of dkml's employees.
ACT 2, SCENE 1.
> ambitious. impatient. egoistic. disciplined. creative.
jihoon in a nutshell: fingers tapping impatiently on a desk, self-assured hubris, loyal to those who stick with him, eyes-on-the-prize.

people are surprised to hear that jihoon is a fiction writer. his glasses & wiry frame peg him for a typical office worker, and his eyebrow-raising habit often intimidates those around him. but rather than being cold and rigid all the time, jihoon is very much a product of his environment. he learned from a young age that the world does not reward those who stray from the socially accepted path. his rushed and ambitious nature is something he's picked up along the way, because maybe getting somewhere higher-up quickly can improve his quality of life. despite his sharp-eyed persona, he's a creative at heart - his imagination is a remnant of his childhood, when he would spend day after day coloring at the kitchen table while his mother worked.

ACT 2, SCENE 2.
INT. KIM FAMILY HOUSEHOLD
Enter KIM JIHOON, age 2.

JIHOON pauses in front of his mother's bedroom. He hears sniffling sounds and frowns. "Mommy?" he asks tentatively.

The sniffling stops. He hears footsteps.

Enter KIM SOOKHEE. She swipes at her glistening eyes and smiles at JIHOON. They embrace.
jihoon is born in hoyang to a young unwed mother. he has never known a father - only resentment for the man who left his mother to fend for herself and her child. although sookhee is raising a baby on the measly wage of a hairstylist, she does her best to protect jihoon from the world. the two of them are each others' world, and his first couple years of life are in the peaceful bubble of their small two-room house above the salon.
EXT. SKY PRESCHOOL PARKING LOT
Enter PARENT 1, PARENT 2.

PARENT 1 Did you hear that the hairstylist lady's son is in my child's class?

PARENT 2 The hairstylist? Isn't she unmarried?

PARENT 1 That's what I'm saying!

The classroom door opens and young toddlers stream out, waving as they spot their parents. PARENT 1 and 2 cast wary glances around the parking lot, looking for a glimpse of the familiar SOOKHEE.

PARENT 1 [to CHILD 1] You better stay away from that boy.
entering school means simultaneously exiting the safe space of his cozy house. from the first day of preschool to the day he graduates high school, whispers of his family background follow him around. it doesn't help that everybody in hoyang is nosy and needs to know everything about their neighbors, and jihoon quickly becomes familiar with the stigma that encompasses his family.

he resents his situation, but the labels that he receives from his teachers, his classmates, and random old women on the street that seem to know him are bearable. what isn't, however, is the scrutiny that his mother receives from the town. jihoon learned to stop speaking up against his peers early on, but he continued to speak back to the ladies who would gossip about his mother when they thought she wasn't listening.
INT. HOYANG ELEMENTARY RM 6-3
Enter MS. KWON, KOREAN TEACHER, and JIHOON.
jihoon meets ms. kwon when he enters sixth grade. she's a young mother herself, she tells him, and she respects any woman who can do it all by herself. jihoon is a little in love with her. his brow furrows as he works on his assignments in korean class, fervently hoping that she is impressed with his work. on days that he's awarded with a "great work!" or "nice!" on his worksheets, he brags to his mom over rice & soup at dinner. at the end of the year, he declares to ms. kwon that he loves her. she smiles, ruffles his hair, and tells him that he's going to grow up to be a fine young man.
INT. KONKUK UNIVERSITY DORMS
A laptop with 14% battery emits a dim glow in the dark room. The clock hits 11:59 just as JIHOON clicks submit on his midterm. JIHOON sits back in his chair, heart racing as though he's just run a mile.
naturally, he chooses to major in korean language & literature when he reaches college after a two-year detour in the military. ever since ms. kwon and the subsequent korean classes that he took, he's had his heart set on becoming a writer. writing is where he can let his imagination run wild, but he had never considered it as a potential career. in fact, his mother is the one who encourages him to become a korean major. in a strange role reversal, he expresses his concerns to her about not being able to find a job after he graduates. she tells him not to worry and eagerly pays the deposit for his acceptance to konkuk university.

in university, jihoon doesn't really feel like he's studying. he spends his days reading and writing about his readings and discussing his readings and he finds it so fulfilling. learning about history and economics and society through literature and discussions is something that he can fully immerse himself into, and in his junior year, he lands himself a journalism internship at the local paper. despite not having any intentions to go into journalism, he finds himself being praised by his superiors, who tell him he has an eye & voice for journalism. through what seems like a whirlwind of events, jihoon secures a job at the same local paper after he graduates.
INT. WRITER MOON'S STUDIO

WRITER MOON claps his hands, grabbing the attention of the three young men  sitting at the table. JIHOON stands next to him with a stack of papers in his hands. JIHOON bows.

WRITER MOON We have a newbie!

ASSIST. WRITER 1 Hey, man, you're off the hook now!

ASSIST. WRITER 2 gives a sympathetic smile to JIHOON.

WRITER MOON Welcome, welcome. Show him where his desk is and have him shadow Taeyoung for now.

JIHOON sets his papers down on the empty desk space that ASSIST WRITER 1 points to. The ASSIST. WRITERS exchange glances as WRITER MOON returns to his office and shuts the door.
jihoon spends several diligent years at the newspaper, writing articles and working weird hours to catch up with the ever-changing news cycle. when he comes home from work each day, his mother asks how his day was, and "it was good" seems like a dishonest answer.

it takes another couple of months and long conversations with his mother before he decides to turn in a letter of resignation. he feels immediate relief from escaping the daily grind - but he also feels like he's wasted the last couple years of his life.

he's unemployed for the longest period in his life when he's 28. he works as a private writing tutor and editor for a couple years while also working part-time at a seven eleven to make some extra pocket money. in the years that he's working different jobs here and there, he also works on personal writing projects. despite making much less than he did at the newspaper, he enjoys his simple life at the convenience store, writing, and working.

jihoon finds his writing passion in fiction. he sends his portfolio to several producing companies and directors, but they all politely (and sometimes not-so-politely) reject him. it's not worth the risk to work with a nobody, they say. so jihoon takes his portfolio to other writers in the industry; he eventually lands a job as an assistant writer to moon seokhoon, whose latest drama square root of love had hit it big in viewer ratings.

assistant writing isn't at all what he imagined life as a fiction writer to be. as the newbie of the team (despite being one of the oldest assistant writers - all the others have worked for writer moon straight out of graduation), he's tasked with the most tedious errands. making instant coffee to match the tastes of the team, printing copies of manuscripts to hand out at meetings, taking notes at their team's weekly recap meeting - it's not the glamorous and leisurely writing life that he had imagined.

his day-to-day life feels like it could be so much more. why is writer moon wasting his time by assigning him to the most mundane tasks at the studio? he aches for the day that he quits his job as assistant writer to mr. moon seokhoon and begins his career as a real writer. until that day comes, every task feels like it drags on and on.

he observes writer moon & his colleagues and thinks, i can do better. during the long and tedious hours of proofreading and editing, he mentally catalogues what he would change if he had full creative control over these projects. but his experience as an assistant writer under one of the most notorious main writers in the industry has taught him to keep his mouth shut and his pen moving.
EXT. HOYANG, SOUTH KOREA

JIHOON walks down the streets of hoyang, where the stores and restaurants haven't changed a bit since he was a child. He stops outside DKML, where there's a giant "Hiring" sign posted on the window.
the process before a script actually gets written is the most time-consuming. it's especially true this time around, when he's tasked with field research to discover the inner workings of a cafe. he grumbles inside as he walks down the streets of hoyang, hoping for a place he can commute to much faster than some trendy cafe in downtown seoul. several cafes & coffee spots catch his eye, but only one is hiring...
ACT 2, SCENE 3.
lifestyle
@ STUDIO now that part of jihoon's weekly schedule is commuting to dkml, his days at the studio have been cut down. writer moon's studio is a small apartment just outside of hoyang where the assistant writers work together. jihoon typically works in the studio from monday afternoons, tuesdays, and fridays. it's a flexible work environment and he can often call in to work from home or adjust his hours when needed. the only thing set in stone is the tuesday weekly meetings, where writer moon & the assistant writers discuss the past week and the goals for the week to come.

@ DKML jihoon views dkml days as a break in his schedule, despite being there to work. it feels reminiscent of being back in college, surrounded by bright young folks all day, and he enjoys being in an environment where nobody is competing for a promotion or kissing the boss' asses. he tries to get a variety of experiences in at dkml, whether it's working the cashier, barista-ing, or helping wipe down the tables at closing. after his shift at dkml ends, he's supposed to jot down some notes about the day for writer moon, but he's usually too exhausted from being on his feet all day that he often forgets.

@ HOME jihoon still lives at home with his mother. he moved back in after his first year in dorms at university and has stayed there ever since. both dkml and writer moon's studio aren't too far from his apartment. when he's at home, he usually watches netflix or reads leisurely (admittedly, he's done more of the former recently).
ACT 2, SCENE 4.
Trivia
ONE.  raises a pug named soju with his mother (she got a puppy when jihoon moved out for university, and now that he's back at home, he's competing for the spot of favorite child with soju). soju's the perfect snuggle buddy for when he's staying up reading.

TWO.  favorite book: cosmos by carl sagan.

THREE.  dog-ears the books he owns. don't come for him, it's the most convenient way to mark his place when he has to put a book down.

FOUR. embodies the "even if i freeze to death, iced americano" mentality.

FIVE.  loves [eating] baked goods. pound cakes & scones are his favorites.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?  pragmatic as he is, jihoon does not believe in magic. the hundreds of books he's immersed himself into include magic systems that he wishes existed (namely harry potter), but he still views the world with an empirical eye.
Act 3, scene 1.
order for kim jihoon!
1 iced americano and 1 green grape tart.
"the name's jadu, it's nice to meet you." they bow in greeting to each other. jihoon sits down without thinking - was that chair behind him when he walked in? "i'm choi jadu. we'll be doing this interview in a tag team kind of way, thanks to the suggestion from my dumb brother." she rolls her eyes. "to start it off, can you introduce yourself and why you want to work here?"

"thanks for having me," jihoon says, putting his thoughts away. "i think i talked with your mother on the phone a couple days ago? my name is kim jihoon and i'm an assistant writer for writer moon seokhoon. his upcoming drama is about a couple who opens up a cafe. i saw that you were hiring for the summer rotation  and i was hoping to use your cafe as a point of inspiration and research. would it be alright if i worked alongside your employees for a couple weeks?"

"actually - let me call in my brother to talk to you about this! our mother mentioned your email to him and he has some more to ask you." she jots down a few things on her clipboard, and just out of jihoon's line of vision, the words flowing from her pen turn into doodles dancing around on the page. jamong walks in and she passes the clipboard to him.

jamong glances at the clipboard and waves towards him on instinct before bending down in a more formal bow. "hello! i'm jamong, the better looking twin-" a small display of teabags falls from the shelf behind him and hits him square on the head. "ow! you little-"

you little? jihoon can't help but notice that the response is a bit strange, as jamong directs his curses towards his sister rather than the shelf behind him. but he's still very much in the business mindset, and he shakes his head clear of any stray thoughts as jamong sits down.

"mr. kim! thanks for stopping by. i know you were interested in working at our cafe for research purposes, but what can you offer us as an employee? we are running a business here, after all."

jihoon nods. "i understand. well, i do have experience in working in customer service after i graduated... but jamong, my paycheck technically comes from writer moon during my working hours. you wouldn't need to worry about paying me, so i don't think it would interfere with your business too much. just think of me as observing and helping out wherever you need it."

"mm, sounds good! that's all for me. it was nice to meet you - tell writer moon that i love his works!" jamong shakes his hand again and gets up, but before he can reach the door, it bursts open.

"took you long enough, my boy, now get on out of here!" a clean-cut, middle-aged man in a frilly apron takes the seat that jamong had just occupied. "it's a pleasure to meet you! my name is hakmin. now, i don't have much time on my hands - what days and hours would you be available to work?"

jihoon's not sure if hakmin's been updated with his whole writer-observer situation. still, he sits up a little taller and says, "pleasure to meet you too, sir. i'm available to come in on monday and wednesday mornings to help out before opening, and wednesday and thursday afternoons i'm available to stay until closing. i'm willing to be flexible with my hours, anything except tuesdays works for me."

"alrighty, we'll be taking all that into consideration. hang in there kidddo - you're not much of a kiddo though, now are you? - the interview's almost done!" hakmin gives a two- salute as he gets up and opens the door, revealing his wife, who wipes her damp hands on her apron. "oh, there you are, beautiful!" he embraces his wife and kisses her on the cheek before waving one last time at jihoon and exiting.

jihoon smiles and bows in greeting.

"hello, jihoon! my name is bok, it's good to meet you. i have to say, i was surprised to receive your email, but i'm glad that dkml caught your eye. i'm here to discuss what you would be doing at the cafe. did you have anything specific in mind?"

"thank you for agreeing to meet me," he responds, shaking her extended hand. "i was hoping to get a glimpse of everything! prepping for the day, making drinks, working at the cashier, observing the kitchen... wherever you need any extra help for the day."

"okay, that's it for now! thank you for coming in and talking to us. we'll get back to you as soon as we can."

jihoon gets up and bows again. "thanks for having me." he offers her his business card. "your cafe is so lovely!"

the colleagues. aka the other assistant writers at writer moon's studio, some even younger than he is. notes: it's not that they don't get along, but there's an awkward tension in the air whenever they're all working together...
choi fam / hakmin: jihoon's a bit awkward around every older man - a result of never having an old man of his own when he was younger. he observes how hakmin treats his wife and children with love and respect and decides that he likes him. jihoon finds himself tailing hakmin a lot during shifts, watching the older man bake and asking him about running a bakery (for research purposes, of course). he stays extra-polite around hakmin, punctuating every sentence with a "sir" or a  "mr. choi".

bok: jihoon's a bit intimidated by bok. part of it is a bit of guilt for feeling like he's intruding and spying on the cafe. but bok has been nothing but accomodating towards jihoon, and he responds with a polite and respectful attitude.

mongdu: with jadu: the two hit it off after she sees his phone wallpaper (a picture of soju sleeping peacefully on his covers). if jihoon is shadowing jadu for his shift, they'll spend the time chatting about books and puppies. with jamong: jihoon's not sure if he's ever had a conversation alone with jamong - he's usually with jamong and hakmin together in the kitchen.

as a unit: jihoon finds it a bit refreshing to observe young people working so hard towards their creative goals (he's become a bit jaded, hearing the complaints of his colleagues at writer moon's studio). overall, the choi family is one that he finds fascinating in terms of dynamic and how unfamiliar it is from any environment that he's personally experienced. he finds himself watching them carefully, taking note of their small interactions... and maybe some strange actions that don't add up?
