no one would have ever thought that byul would have such dualities to the point that they're on different ends of the spectrum. and that's all because of chocolates. and her self-depracating self as the cherry on top. using those rich sweets to transform herself to a whole different person, one could say she might end up having an identity crisis at one point in her life. that, however, was only an escape from herself. so much hatred to how monochromatic her personality is, chocolates seems to make everything less painful, much more sweeter, and a whole lot different too.

⁍　doesn't like the way that she feels so fragile and scared about interacting, that she even chose to eat chocolates just to be a lot more courageous than her real self

⁍　the gang knows about it, and frankly is against that kind of method because, hey they love her for who she is (they can never leave someone as soft and precious as byul no matter how "dull" she may be)

⁍　but still, she depracates herself so much she couldn't really handle those kinds of thoughts because nothing and no one can

⁍　in a sense, that also makes her dishonest because she can't stay true to herself

⁍　no matter how much she tries to be the fun byul, without it then she's just regular han byul who, most often than not, goes to a convenience store at 12AM in just her pikachu onesie

⁍　did i mentioned she's also pretty dull? yeah she's monotonous—so much so that what she does in her daily life is pretty much predictable

⁍　she's not dependent to anyone, no, she actually is to chocolates instead

⁍　one of the guys in the gang even said that if a person can become someone else entirely just by becoming drunk because of alcohol, byul's pretty much like that—just with chocolates instead

⁍　it's very much unhealthy for her because it can lead to diabetes but she doesn't care about that at all

⁍　which is actually why her dependency to those sweets are dangerous

⁍　but for someone who's soft, she's too stubborn to listen to what the others scolded her about

BACKGROUND

⁍　born in daegu, south korea on the year 1996, 13th of june, han byul is the only daughter of two very conservative parents

⁍　not only they were conservative, they're very strict too so byul lived her life following their orders and demands without them asking what she wanted

⁍　they're not her ideal parents she had wanted, but it's not like she could even leave because there's no way she can do that at a young age

⁍　living with them also means that they're very critical to everything she does, and that includes her studies and her choice of hobbies

⁍　she had no childhood, always focused on studying that she never experienced what it was like to have fun outside or watch cartoons because her mother decided to make her watch something a bit more educational than a simple tom and jerry cartoon serie

⁍　she wasn't allowed to eat sweets much either (especially chocolates, that's very very very rare) because both of her parents are diabetic, meaning that there's also a high chance that she will too if she doesn't watch herself

⁍　thus, byul literally has no one she considers as "friends"; they're just acquaintances that she needs to be in good terms with if she wanted to survive highschool without being bullied

⁍　so han byul grew up as if she's ready to be a nun—it didn't helped that both her parents are religious either

⁍　entering highschool, it was that time when she finally met kim taehyung, ironically on valentine's day. not white day, valentine's day

⁍　byul, by no means, have someone she likes. she's too caught up with her studies for that; but for just one second, she thought that taehyung was like the guardian angel she wished to be friends with

⁍　she's well-aware that there's no way taehyung likes her, they ~~barely~~ never talked despite being classmates, so she was pretty much confused why taehyung would give her chocolates out of nowhere

⁍　"uhm.. what?"

⁍　"it's for you."

⁍　"we don't know each other?"

⁍　"i know. but you're always alone. and i made extra chocolates but since i already gave most of them to my friends, you get to have the last piece."

⁍　"i really don't need your pity."

⁍　"i don't pity you. i just want to give it to you."

⁍　"i don't eat chocolates."

⁍　"you're an odd one."

⁍　"my parents are diabetic. eating that would raise the risks of me getting diabetic as well."

⁍　"it doesn't hurt to eat once."

⁍　".... okay."

⁍　and boy did she felt alive eating it. she's not entirely sure if taehyungw as really great of a beaker, or it's because she never ate chocolate, but it tasted good to her

⁍　so much that she actually felt like crying because 1) she broke her promise to her parents; and 2) it really tasted so ing good to her

⁍　and she doesn't know if it's normal to feel kinda high whenever you eat chocolates, but it feels like that to her to the point that she began to be chattier

⁍　it wasn't long that she and taehyung became friends after that—byul even disregarded her thoughts on whether tae likes her or not. she knew that he's just being kind, and she's not going to complain about it

⁍　it was because of that chocolate incident that byul decided to continue eating them. there's no harm in breaking one rule, just one—the first and only rule she'll ever break, and that caused a change in her aura and personality as well

⁍　it was also that time when she met the rest of the gang. one of the few people she actually feel so close and give her trust to. even before she became the fun side of herself, they were already there for her and she couldn't ask for anything more than that

⁍　soon, people began to notice how loud she became, how lively and fun she is to be around. it made her feel good. it made her feel wanted. it made her feel happy compared to the everyday thoughts she has when she's her dull self

⁍　not long after, she gained more friends (other than the core gang she has with tae). after a year, it's as if she was already on the map, being known as one of the most approachable students in her batch. it's as if everyone even forgot how monotonous she was before

⁍　in school, she's fun byul. back at home, she's dull byul. and that didn't go unnoticed by taehyung and the rest of the gang

⁍　they were aware that byul's using chocolates as some form of escape from how black and white both herself and her life is. and they're also aware of the risks that may happen if she ate too much. but it was all past her head

⁍　one thing she was frustrated about, but never have the courage to tell (even in her fun byul self), is that they never understood how miserable her life was when she's being herself

⁍　they never knew how much she had wanted to be wanted, to have someone to talk to, to not feel afraid to voice out her feelings or talk to a lot of people

⁍　her parents robbed that from her. and if chocolates are the only way to give that back, she doesn't care about the consquences anymore

⁍　some of the gang gave up on convincing her to stop, some didn't. but taehyung was still standing firm on it. she had a feeling that he felt guilt for letting her give in to temptation (he's the one who offered it, after all); but she never blamed him

⁍　and despite how many times she said that, it still didn't stopped taehyung from reminding her—and sometimes actually stopping her

⁍　graduation came, and byul gathered the courage to tell her parents how she wanted to become a chocolatier. of course, they were against to the idea because 1) their initial thought of what job byul should take is law or medicine; 2) did she forgot that they're both diabetic so the chances of her having diabetes as well is high?; and 3) how can she be a chocolatier if she never ate chocolate?

⁍　while graduation was supposed to be a celebration of success and taking a new step towards their chosen path in life, to byul it felt more like a crime confession

⁍　at first, they were disappointed. but that soon turned to guilt and awe at the same time. it wasn't only her dream to become a chocolatier she came clean with. she also told them her feelings. she never expected them to still accept her that way—ater all, she knew they're the most narrow-minded people ever—but she guessed that maybe it's because she's their only child that they thought it's best to support whatever she wanted to do in with her life

⁍　and while she never got the chance to tell the gang that things have finally changed (except for her own personal dilemma with her personality), she knew she'll be able to tell them once they meet each other again

⁍　and she knew that one day, maybe taehyung wouldn't feel guilty about what he had done. after all, he was the reason why byul loved chocolates and found her dream job in the first place

DAILY LIFE

⁍　she always wakes up at 6:30AM because it takes her at least an hour to get ready and eat breakfast while 15 minutes from her apartment to the shop

⁍　SHOP HOURS: Mon-Fri: 8AM-10PM; Sat-Sun: 9AM-11PM

⁍　before opening the shop, she'll eat her usual snickers chocolate bar to switch up to fun byul and start a new day

⁍　compared in highschool, she cut down her chocolate intake because her parents are really worried about her—but that still doesn't stop her from eating (that's her job, after all)

⁍　free time is mostly spent on creating recipes, plating design of her chocolates, watching anime, and leisure walk

⁍　she's the owner and head chocolatier of her own shop, but she also trains some aspiring chocolatiers whenever they ask her to

DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT LIFESTYLE. ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH IT? i'm the owner and head chocolatier of my chocolate shop, dolce vita. right now i'm extremely happy with it. i somehow came to terms with my real self and the me you are currently talking to right now; but if you wanna talk to dull me, visit me at home instead!

HOW DO YOU DEAL WHEN LIFE GETS HARD, IF INDEED YOU DO? i guess eating chocolates is my coping mechanism. not gonna lie, i still depracate myself. i'm also terrified for feeling fear. so, i eat chocolates to be the fun and courageous me to escape that. gotta be honest, it's kinda a bad coping mechanism that i'm pretty sure the others hate and worries them a lot.

IF YOU'RE COMFORTABLE, SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT THOSE HARDSHIPS dull me would've said no but i know i have to (sighs). like i mentioned before, i'm still having trouble adjusting to life by being me. often times, i would stop just by the door of my apartment, thinking whether i should take the snickers bar at my fridge so that i can eat before i open the shop or i should just be myself. but my customers, both regular and new, liked my shop because of the ambiance. they said i gave that warm and happy vibe that makes them love eating my chocolates more. i'm currently feeling conflicted on whether i should stop or not because this time, my job's on the line. (short pause) my parents told me that it's fine to be me. i know it's fine to be myself—i knew better than to let other's opinions affect my perception on things but... i guess i'm just not ready to just be me. and i hate myself for it.

WHAT'S ONE CHARACTERISTIC OF YOURS THAT YOU WOULDN'T WANT YOUR CHILD TO INHERIT? i wouldn't say one (smiles sadly). frankly enough, i don't want my kids to go through the same thing i've went through. it's because of that that i became like this in the first place. i want them to be more confident about themselves, to not feel down and get all negative stuff. i just don't want them to inherit every single negative characterstic i have. i want them to have a happy and sincere life.

DO YOU MISS HIGH SCHOOL? WHAT'S ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES? i miss them. a whole lot. it's probably one of the turning points in my life and that's all because of tae. i guess every memory i shared with the gang are my favorites. they're the ones who accepted me and made me feel free when my parents couldn't back then.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU WISH YOU KNEW BACK THEN? if i had known that my parents would've accepted the fact that i would go against their standards, i would've told them sooner and avoid the fact that i eat snickers 3 times a day. but then again, that's how i ended up falling in love with the job i have today so i'm 50/50 with this.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT REUNION? WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO THE LETTER? HOW ARE YOU HANDLING LOGISTICS? i'm pretty sure you already know that my initial reaction was that that letter must've been from tae. it looks and sounds so much like him—or maybe me and the gang have that weird jedi wherein we just feel like it's him. then after i processed the fact that there would be a reunion, i thought of whether i should come as myself or the fun me because they seem to enjoy that side of myself than the former. at some point i felt excited because it's been a long time since i've talked to them, and i feel nervous about telling them about what happened in my life. but... what i do fear the most, however, is the disappointment in their eyes once they found out that i never changed. okay, maybe a little since did made a deal with dad that i'll cut down my chocolate intake, but that doesn't change the fact that i still eat them knowing that i am slowly becoming a diabetic now.

KIM TAEHYUNG

the key person who changed her life completely—and not in a dramatic way. taehyung's probably the only one in the gang that byul doesn't hesitate to be just herself because she knew that he doesn't have no opinion of her being so monotonous and timid. she can call him her bestfriend, but she's not entirely sure of what tae thinks of her since she knew that he has a lot of friends (didn't helped that he became a successful and handsome idol). she also had a momentary crush on him but was soon gone when they became friends. she treats him more like family (and a brother) than being a friend. it didn't matter to her if tae didn't realize how much he changed her life, she's just content that he calls her one of his close friends out of all the friends he has and his phone contacts can take.

JU NAKWON

in a sense, byul relates a lot to nakwon when it comes to pleasing people. though in very different ways, they both have insecurities when it comes to socializing. they're both perceived as "happy and bright" kind of girls, but at the same time, they're not when no one's looking. nakwon's one of the members in the gang who's still concerned about her changing personalities and eating chocolates. even at the reunion, she's worrily asking her how's her health and everything. they have that kind of companionship wherein they both understand each other despite nakwon having hesitance to have their friendship become more meaningful and important. byul felt that, but she didn't said anything because she knew nakwon would tell if she's ready to.
