It was a cold winter night in ulsan, south korea when cho bodeum was born. Her parents did not seem to mind due to her sweet, gummy smile warming up the entire delivery room. They were older than most, wanting to make sure they were financially secure before starting a family. With a successful convenience store, they were able to do so. Things were going so well that they tried again four years later, and bodeum found herself to be the older sister of twin brothers.
Her childhood was quiet and simple much like herself. At school, the classes were easy and the children were nice. With the handful of friends she had, they would chat and do arts-and-crafts together. After school, she’d head straight to her parents’ store to help out or babysit her little brothers in their apartment home one-floor above. with her knack for drawing, she used it to make posters for upcoming sales, plastering them all over the store. her parents shook their heads but smiled, happy that their eldest child was practically channeling her creativity.
Life became less simple for bodeum once she entered high school. Suddenly the classes were difficult and demanding. Things had to be done in a certain way and by a certain time with no room to explore or try something new. The rigidity was almost as stifling as the intense competition amongst her classmates. She constantly suffocated and bored. Her only solace was staring out the window instead of paying attention to her teacher’s droning lecture. With all the doom and gloom, she didn’t expect a prince charming to sweep her off her feet.
It felt like a scene stolen right out of a shojo manga when the park sungho pulled her aside after class and asked her to be his girlfriend. For someone who took pride in her keen observation skills, she was totally blindsided by his confession; yet, she couldn’t help but say yes. It didn’t take long for her to get swept into the romance of it all. He had easy confidence that she could follow and constantly kept her on her toes with impromptu dates. She welcomed the distraction from the monotony of school and grades. Why bother taking notes of some boring lecture when she could sketch that handsome face of his in her notebook? Instead of going to cram school, wouldn’t it be more fun to relax at the nearby park and steal kisses under a shady tree?

Even her carefree boyfriend was turning down their daily dates in favor of hitting the books. She tried to catch up with the others but it was overwhelming and stressful. How she managed to skate by a barely passable score was a miracle. When it came to applying for universities, she knew that the university of ulsan was her best bet so it ended up being her only application. Her peers had bigger ambitions (and better scores). She still remembers the bone-crushing hug sungho gave her after showing off his acceptance letter to seoul national university. She wasn’t sure what hurt more: the hug or the fact that they would soon be apart from one another.
After graduation, they spent as much time as they could together. sungho whispered sweet promises in Bodeum’s ear as they made love, reassuring her that distance would not break them. She trusted him but that didn’t stop the crocodile tears streaming down her face as she waved him off at the train station. Thankfully, packing and moving into the uou’s freshman dormitories kept her busy. Her parents tripled checked she had everything she needed before hugging her goodbye. They weren’t thrilled that she was going into college as an undeclared major; however, they knew it was best to let her be and discover her own path.

If bodeum could describe her first semester at uou, she could summarize it in two words: a struggle. After her devastating breakup, it was difficult for her to pay attention in class. The events on campus weren’t as appealing as sulking in her room. She was supposed to be having the time of her life yet she couldn’t bring herself to try. Thank goodness for her roommates. The three other girls slowly pushed her out of her funk. It started with them asking Bodeum to cook them homemade meals during the weekends. After all, she was the only one competent in the communal kitchen. Soon it led to her discovering her love of cooking and food in general. The realization pushed her to meet with her academic advisor so that she could declare herself a foods & nutrition major for the rest of her college career.
To catch up with her peers, bodeum’s weekday schedule is surprisingly packed. Thankfully she is quite the early bird, getting up around 5:30 am and only hitting her snooze button two or three times. After her morning ritual of yoga and drinking tea while staring out the window, she’ll quickly get ready and head to the dining hall. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and she’s a strict believer in that. Living on campus means little to no commuting time, giving her ample time to walk leisurely to her class and enjoy the grand scenery around her. In between classes or club meetings, she likes to do homework, work on a new creative hobby (like painting), or vlogging.
She’s very involved with her clubs and sees them as the highlights of her week. With the bullet journal club, she bonding with her fellow club members over stationary supplies and looking at each others bujo spreads. Her food science and nutrition club meetings manage to always be informative and inspiring. She’s always eager to sign up for the latest volunteer event or exchange recipes with another club member.
When it comes to socializing, bodeum can get pretty picky about it. She loves spending time in the dorms with her roommates, cooking them meals, and catching up with each other’s lives. cho donghyun and kim bongcha have been happily married for 40 years and their three children are a testament to that. they’ve always taken immense pride in their eldest’s creativity and kindness. without even having to ask, she took on household responsibilities while they worked hard to build their convenience store business. they’ve always had a hands-off approach with raising their children, trusting them to make their own choices, and grow from them. donghyun and bongcha did express worry over bodeum when she was dating that sungho kid. they never really liked him but tolerated the relationship for their daughter’s sake. in the present day, they are extremely proud of bodeum’s growth and like to show off her youtube videos to their customers, much to her embarrassment.

when 4-year-old bodeum found out she was going to be an older sister to cho dongwoo and cho hyunwoo, she was hesitant. even at a young age, she had always valued her privacy and the sole attention of her parents. over time, she turned a new leaf. with her parents busy at the store, she often had to babysit the two. it was a great way for them to bond and soon enough, the twins viewed her as their second mom. they were sad when she left for college, though they denied it like typical teenagers. she likes to facetime with them once a week since she misses them as well.

bodeum's first love and the one who ripped her heart to pieces. he was one of the most popular boys at munsu high, so many girls (and some guys) in all three grades expressed interest in him. it'd be an understatement to say she was surprised by his confession. yet her instincts told her to accept them. she had always admired him from afar and she was eager to explore the exciting world of dating. sungho didn't disappoint her. he was a full-on romantic, showering her with gifts and whisking her away from one exciting date after another. it was a blissful three years and bodeum knew she was falling hard for him. normally one to guard her privacy, she felt like she didn't have to do that with him. she gave him her everything and she thought he was doing the same.

She must’ve looked like a mess when she walked in, the wind was particularly strong that day and had wreaked havoc on her hair. She tried her best to smooth it out while making her way to the counter. Looking up at the menu, she couldn’t help but feel both impressed and overwhelmed by endless choices. The fact that they had an extensive smoothie section made her giddy like a child in a candy store. What made her smile widen was the cute barista who took her order. ”Oh, what do you suggest? They joked around about the possibility of running into each other on campus; though in reality, the chances were slim being in different departments and all that. The universe worked in funny ways it seemed. After a long search of various books in the library for an upcoming nutrition project, she rounded the corner of the bookshelf and spotted a familiar face. Dropping her pile of books quietly and sitting down in front of him, she gently knocked on the table to get Garam’s attention. They couldn’t help but smile warmly at each other and quietly laugh at the irony (though not quietly enough for the people around them). They spent the entire night together, forgetting about their books at one point and enjoying each other’s company.

It was a late sunday night. both had early classes in the morning yet they were in her room, trying and failing to study and goofing off instead. She was in the middle of an instagram break, scrolling through her feed when she saw\ something she never would’ve expected: her old high school acquaintance, smiling happily in the arms of park sungho. The world was indeed small but she felt even smaller at the moment. “I-it’s nothing,” she stuttered as he looked at her with concern. It wasn’t nothing though and before she knew it, she couldn’t stop the tears from falling.

Garam acted as nothing had happened and she went along with it, walking robin like they originally planned. Her keen eye knew he was bothered and she realized that she needed to do something about it.
Luckily, she already had everything she needed. She guided them to her favorite spot on campus, the lush secret garden, hidden in the dorm. in her backpack were a big comfy blanket, some baked goods, adult coloring books, and colored pencils. “it’s been a stressful week,” she told him as she laid everything out on the plush grass. ”let’s turn our minds off and just color some pages.” This did the trick of getting him to relax, though he wasn’t ready to tell her what happened. That was okay. When it came to Garam, Bodeum had all the patience in the world. “I’ll always listen to you, Garam, ” she reassured him with a sweet smile on her face. “No matter the time or place, my ears are always open.” It didn’t take long for that to happen. A few days later, he opened up to her and she comforted him as he did for her some time ago.
