image  korean native language. minseo has always been surrounded by tongyeong natives, and has never had a reason to adapt to the central seoul dialect— as she watches her friends return from the city speaking the clean-cut seoul dialect, she's a little sad to see them lose their familiar lilting satoori.
image  ENGLISH outside of reading (very slowly) and basic phrases (very limited), minseo hasn't been very good at keeping up with learning english after graduating high school.

there are some people who are outgoing over text and shy in person, and then there are people like moon minseo. her resting happy face and need to please everybody around her add up to a happy-go-lucky, ready-to-do-anything bundle of energy. in high school she was the moodmaker of the group, but with the departure of her close friends after high school, her hyper tendencies became more muted. although she's a little less energy crazy now, there's still something different about the way she interacts with close friends: she loosens up, laughs more, and is generally more relaxed. and it’s these close people whose opinions she values the most. it’s no wonder that her love language is words of affirmation, because she thrives off of compliments and reassurances.

from a young age, she was expected to help out in the family business and learned a sense of responsiblity quickly. her meticulous planner and to-do lists show that she's willing to follow through on what her duties are. in fact, it's a little too easy to get minseo to agree on something. minseo finds it hard to say no to people, especially her friends and family. that's why she constantly feels like she's living for other people. from taking a gap year to support her family to pausing her moving process to take in her old friends and attend another old friend's funeral, there's been too many instances in her life that she's put others before herself. when she does do something for herself, she feels almost guilty, as if she's being selfish.

WHOAMI
born on geoje island, her parents relocated to tongyeong a year after her birth to be closer to her father's family and help out with the guesthouse that they had run for decades. minseo had a relatively boring childhood: her family wasn't poor but wasn't wealthy, and their family vacations usually consisted of traveling to a small city in southern korea rather than the bustling metropolis of seoul.

minseo was already friends with junghee and sungho, and joining the friend group at that point was just a matter of time. it was near the start of the group's beginnings, and she loved having a group of friends that she could hang out with and support. although she was closer to some than others, the group held a special place in her heart - she felt comfortable around them, and near the end of high school when they began drifting apart, minseo felt like the glue that kept them together. when a couple of them wouldn't talk to each other, minseo would be the messenger and try to reconcile them.

school was never a priority for minseo. her high school experience was pretty much summed up by the memories she made with her friends; being high schoolers gave them so much more freedom. when she entered high school, she was allowed to start working at the guesthouse officially, and that was where she put her attention. minseo had decided that she'd stay in tongyeong to work and support her family. her parents and grandpa, however, had encouraged her to apply to colleges outside of tongyeong.

after graduating high school, minseo was on track to move to ilsan for college. it was a long bus ride from her hometown, and although she was nervous, minseo was excited to have an experience unlike anything she'd had before. but just as senior year came to a close, the guesthouse started tanking: customers weren't as frequent, the ones who did come barely stayed longer than a couple days, and her grandpa's health began to decline as well. the situation ended up dragging minseo back to tongyeong before she could even leave.

before minseo knew it, three years had flown by. spending time with her friends and neighbors in the familiar landscape of tongyeong, working at the guesthouse every day, and being able to see her family so often became a cocoon for minseo that she wasn't sure she wanted to escape yet. but she knew she couldn't spend her entire life working in tongyeong— she wanted to continue her plans to go to college. so after a year of studying hard for the entrance exam, she was admitted again to the college in ilsan she had originally planned to attend. it seemed like this time she would finally be able to live her own life— until things started spiraling out of control again.

in an eerie ctrl+c ctrl+v of her graduation, the situation around her kept her in tongyeong. the week before she's all set to move across the country, she gets the news: lee junghee is dead. the funeral is in tongyeong. and she knows what that means...

REMEMBER WHEN
허라온 AND I...
minseo remembers being envious of raon before they got to know each other well. it felt like raon had it all: a pretty face, a natural talent for art, and a close bond with her friends. to minseo's surprise, junghee ended up introducing the two of them to each other, and although minseo was a little intimidated at the beginning, she did her best to befriend raon. when the two of them hang out, minseo ends up babbling to fill up the silence, but raon is still one of minseo's favorite people to be around. when raon was struggling with her parents cutting her off because of her career choices, minseo realized that things may not have been so perfect for her friend after all. when she was initially cut off from her parents, minseo and raon called for hours and minseo's mindless way with words helped comfort raon.

now, they've lost their frequent contact. it's just the occasional message, usually initiated by minseo, and although they've grown further apart, minseo still loves to see updates from raon on social media or the group chat.

junghee and minseo liked to say that they were destined to be best friends from the womb. they were born on the same day at the same small hospital in tongyeong, and lay next to each other for the first hours of their life. their parents exchanged contact information that day to set up playdates for their kids when they got older. it wasn't until much later that they actually met again, though— minseo's parents lost the phone number they had saved, and met junghee's parents at the first day of preschool when the two of them shared a class.

they initially bonded over sharing the same paints for their fingerpainting project. they've been on each others' radars ever since— they were lucky enough to be seat partners in 1st grade, and gradually junghee began dragging minseo along to meet her other friends. while the entire group became precious to minseo, she held a special place in her heart for junghee - after all, she's the reason minseo was able to meet all these amazing friends.

after high school, junghee was one of the only friends that minseo kept in contact with very often. it wasn't just because her mom would nag at her to check up on junghee and ask how she was doing— talking to junghee came more naturally than the other kids in their little group. the times that they talked the most often was when junghee would plan a trip to visit tongyeong (minseo usually found out before junghee told her, since her parents and junghee's talked to each other nearly every day).

even for minseo, there's always somebody in your friend group that you vibe with, but you're still awkward around. that's how her relationship with muyeol is summed up, because although in a group they have no trouble interacting and having fun, it becomes awkward the second you leave the two alone.

sungho and minseo's parents all knew each other before they were born, which meant they've known each other all their lives. their family businesses have a close relationship: sungho's bakery supplies the guesthouse with breakfast for the guests, and in return the bakery gets a lot of attention from tourists and guests. minseo jokes that she and sungho had a business relationship in the beginning, but as they grew older and met their other friends, their friendship grew as well.

some of minseo's fondest memories with sungho are sitting on the rooftop of the guesthouse, eating snacks and talking to each other. even when sungho begins to drift from the rest of the friend group, there's still an unspeakable bond between them. they meet often after that (sungho helps out at the guesthouse whenever he has time, and in return minseo volunteers to taste test his pastries for him).

when they graduate high school, sungho confesses that he likes minseo. it takes minseo by surprise, because she's been completely oblivious to his little hints, but minseo makes it clear that a relationship isn't what she's looking for— after all, they both have their own separate paths for the future. but as their plans falter and they both end up staying in tongyeong, minseo realizes that she has feelings for sungho as well.

their relationship feels precarious, because they both know there's a due date: sungho wants to go to seoul, minseo wants to go to college, and so the year that they do spend together is crammed with memories. they go on more rooftop dates, and although they do their best to hide their relationship from their friends and families (excluding some of their closest friends, of course), sungho spills the beans one day. while walking her home, he presses a quick kiss to her cheek and grins, which sets off the neighborhood gossip.

they don't know they've been caught, and keep trying to hide their dates, although everybody and their mother in tongyeong knows that nam sungho and moon minseo are dating.

the day that sungho leaves for seoul creeps up on them. before she knows it, minseo is waving goodbye to sungho at the bus station. and... that's it. they had discussed long distance, but they both know it won't work out. after a hasty promise to keep in touch, sungho boards the bus for the other side of the country. after that, they barely talk except through group chats and the occasional message. minseo's afraid that things will become more awkward if she reaches out, so it's radio silence on both ends.

sungho comes back to tongyeong for junghee's funeral, and they both pretend like everything is normal. it's the normal banter, jokes, and greetings - but as their parents press for details and friends ask what's going on between the two of them, the awkward silence returns.

REMEMBER WHEN
권보영 AND I...
boyoung is the sister that minseo always wishes she had. they grew up going to the same schools and always hovering near each others’ circles but didn’t really meet until they were introduced through junghee. minseo always enjoyed hanging out with boyoung - she could ramble and rant and boyoung would often listen patiently and help her organize her thoughts.

when boyoung moved into minseo’s guesthouse during senior year after a fight with her parents, they ended up spending every waking minute together: they’d walk to school, do homework, eat, chill in minseo’s room, and just rant to each other. minseo cries when boyoung leaves for seoul, even though they promise to text each other often. and unlike some of her other friends, minseo is able to keep in touch with boyoung— they occasionally ask each other about their days, about life, and minseo loves seeing her friend genuinely happy in the city.

when they meet again in tongyeong, there isn’t any of that residual awkwardness that seems to hover over every other person. they return to that comfortable friendship easily - as if neither of them ever left.

junghee tugs at minseo’s hand at lunch, bringing her and their group of friends to the table where youngwhi is sitting alone. the boy looks bewildered, but minseo and junghee press on and are determined to befriend him by the end of the lunch period. it’s the first day in a long friendship.

in the beginning of high school, youngwhi shows up at minseo’s door, eyes red and voice scratchy. minseo doesn’t ask any questions, just comforts him and hugs him tight. after he calms down, minseo asks if he needs a place to stay. youngwhi’s hesitant - he can’t afford to pay for a room in the guesthouse - but he says he’ll sleep outside (it’s not even that cold during the nights, he says). frowning, minseo tells him to just come inside. their mini argument ends in minseo dragging two blankets out to the rooftop of the guesthouse, where she and youngwhi have a sleepover for what feels like the first time in years. near the end of high school, this kind of thing becomes more and more frequent. youngwhi doesn’t argue about staying outside anymore, and each time minseo makes sure that he’s as comfortable as he can be in his room.

as sad as minseo is that she won’t be able to see youngwhi more often now, she’s glad that he’s found somebody that he can be happy with. at first, she checks up on him often, even talking to chai a couple times. but then timezones, careers, life gets in the way, and their kakaotalk chats end up becoming rarer and rarer. they hear of each others’ news through boyoung occasionally, and when they see each other again for the first time in years, they can’t hide the awkward air between them. but the atmosphere of tongyeong and familiarity comes through, and soon enough, they’re back to their comfortable conversations.

hyeongmin and minseo’s relationship has always been centered around food. their friendship hit a peak near the end of middle school, when they’d compete in “convenience store contests”, where the person who bought the best meal of convenience store food with the least amount of money would be the winner. but throughout middle and high school, minseo would pop by hyeongmin’s house to check on him if her hyeongmin-stress-radar was blaring (it’s too easy to tell when something’s wrong with hyeongmin - he visibly pouts). in return, he leaves bundles of kimbap on her desk at school with little thank-you notes scribbled on post its.

when hyeongmin leaves for seoul, minseo makes him two rolls of kimbap for him to eat on the bus ride there. (they’re a little loose and spinach is falling out of the ends, but it’s made with love and care.) it’s hard to stay in contact with hyeongmin - the notifications on their chat fall silent, and before they know it, they’re meeting in tongyeong for junghee’s funeral. it’s a good thing they’re not left alone in a room, because they can barely interact in a group: it’s hard to jump back into that dynamic they had in high school.

dear diary, i know i should be sad that junghee passed away, but i can't help but also feel... relief? being surrounded by familiar faces, being caught up in work, being able to stay in tongyeong— i guess i didn't realize how anxious i was to move to ilsan. i just hate that the reason i figured it out was the death of a friend (i still can't believe it. writing it down doesn't make it seem real).

but just because i'm glad i have an excuse to stay in tongyeong for a few more days doesn't mean that it's all good things— it's already been a nightmare trying to move logistics around for my apartment and dealing with all of the guests at the house.

and... i still don't know how to feel about junghee. of course i'm devastated she's gone (she's gone). but shouldn't i be... sadder? what's wrong with me?

[ tl;dr: all of a sudden things pile up: fixing moving logistics, a sudden influx of guests at the guesthouse, dealing with all of the old faces who have been gone for years, and grieving in her own way for a lost friend. ]
daily life life has gotten pretty monotone for minseo. you'll find her at the guesthouse 70% of the time, taking reservations and acting as a receptionist. the other 30% of the time, she's probably relaxing in her room or visiting her friends.
occupation soon-to-be college student studying business. for now, best employee at tongyeong's most popular guest house!
image loves korean band music - favorite artists include zai.ro, n.flying, gift
image is a morning person. usually wakes up at around 7:30 a.m. to enjoy the colder weather and view from her house
image her parents took her to church every weekend, but as she grew older she became more skeptical of religion and now stays at home on sundays

are you ready to return?
minseo's the welcoming hand when all the friends step off the bus into tongyeong for the first time in a while. and so while she doesn't have anywhere physically to return to, she feels as if she's stepped in a time machine to back when they were in high school. after weeks of being nervous about moving to a city alone, reverting back to her high school self for at least a couple of days is a relief for minseo.
did you keep in contact with any of your friends in the group?
"i mean, i try to message everybody from time to time to check up on them. merry christmas, happy birthday, that kind of thing. obviously i kept in touch with the kids who stayed in tongyeong! we get together every so often to eat a meal together and it feels like high school never ended... but as for the kids who moved out to the city? i think it was easier to talk more often right when we first graduated and everyone began moving. but then they all made new friends, and tongyeong became a second thought for the ones who left."
what were you doing when you received the news that junghee passed?
scrolling through the order receipts of the furniture being delivered to her apartment in a week, eating a pastry she had picked up at paris baguette that morning, ready to turn in for the night after what had been a completely normal day. it wasn't unusual to text raon past midnight, but raon usually wasn't the one who initiated the conversation. junghee's dead. suddenly, the pastry tastes like ash in , and time stops for a moment.
is there anything you wish you would have told junghee before she died?
"i wish i had time to tell her everything amazing about her: her ability to talk to people and make them feel comfortable in their own skin, the way she was always there for us, how smart and pretty and wholesome and everything else she was. i know i'm lucky - i talk to junghee often, meet up with her for a meal, but it's been forever since we were able to have a heart to heart. and i guess we'll never have that opportunity again."
what is your favorite memory with junghee?
it was senior year of high school, right before the entrance exams. everybody was kind of stressed and it showed, with the kids being snappier than usual. minseo convinced junghee to meet her at 11 pm, and the two of them snuck into the nearby beach armed with convenience store snacks and drinks. minseo isn't sure that she's ever had an experience like that one— just catching up with an old friend, letting some steam loose, talking for hours and hours until their coffee flavored milk was left forgotten on top of their picnic blanket.
what would you say is your way of coping with stressful and emotional situations?
minseo tends to get really heated in arguments but can barely make her point without sounding like she's going to cry (maybe that's why she never joined debate team in high school). coping with stress and emotions has never been her forte, especially now: she's never really experienced death in her close circle, and so she's not exactly sure how she's supposed to react beyond just crying. staying in tongyeong after high school, protected by her bubble, meant she never got a chance to develop emotional maturity.
is there anything you'd like to tell your friends?
"i miss you all. i'm so glad to see everybody again." it's not like minseo completely lost contact with her friends after graduation. but it's certainly been harder to meet up and keep a conversation going. although the circumstances of their reunion are devastating, there's a part of minseo that wonders if they would ever have a reunion like this without such an event to attract them back to tongyeong.
if you were asked to stay a few more days, maybe even a week for your friends, would you be willing to stay?
"i don't really have a choice, do i?"
