born and semi-raised as suji yang.
elaboration: suji yang was born early may 20th, 1968 to two loving parents, junsu & hyelim yang. the couple had been married for 2 years by the time suji came into the picture. the two were young parents and it was safe to say that they were slightly overwhelmed with the arrival of suji. hyelim agreed to be a stay at home mother for suji's sake while junsu found work doing odd jobs.
growing up in seoul, suji was a firecracker from the get-go. suji was an energetic child, always running around the house with a big laugh or big smile strung across her face. suji's mother wasn't the biggest fan of her constant sudden bursts of energy. she was always the creative type, painting & coloring when she wasn't running around or singing her heart out as if she were a little rockstar. it was evident to her father that she had a spunky spirit. suji's mother was often telling her to refrain from always running around and to be on the quieter side. suji was a lot to handle some days whenever she was especially energetic.
by the time suji was three, the marriage between her parents had severely soured. this was mainly due to her father's unfaithfulness to her mother. he had an affair with a beautiful american english teacher. the affair officially caused their divorce and suji was split between her parents. suji understood the situation her parents were in and didn't let it effect her. she accepted her father's mistress especially because she was more fun to be around. while her mother had little patience for her, the american beauty had all the patience in the world. when suji was five, the american beauty had a name; jennifer and she was now her step-mother. and step-mother proposed the idea of moving to the states with her and junsu.
hyelim didn't really care what her ex-husband and new wife were going. by this time, suji's six and a half and was quite unhappy with her mother as she still didn't have the patience to deal with her. at such a young age, she had a difficult relationship with her mother and understood at that point that her mother could possibly care less about where she went if it meant not dealing with her "insane energy". so, it was agreed upon that suji would go with her father and step-mother to the states.

elaboration: suji moved to hawkins as per suggestion by her step-mother; believing that a small town was the best environment to raise suji. and so that was when suji's life changed for better and worse. jennifer decided to formally adopt suji and change her name legally to be more american. so, susan elle yang was born in 1976. as a step-mother, jennifer loved susan more than anything and adopting her was her way of showing it. she looked out for her and nurtured her creative and larger than life personality.
while they solidified their relationship as mother and daughter, susan's father started drinking while "looking" for a job in the city around 1978. he wasn't a pleasant person as drinker with him constantly pestering suji to fetch him things around the house but yelling at her for being slow in getting him said things. when susan was turning ten, her father's drinking problem got worse and so did his relationship with jennifer. he began to physically abuse jennifer especially when she told him to get out of the house and yelled at him to stop drinking for susan's sake. jennifer sheltered susan as best she could from seeing her father as an abusive drunk since he never abused susan. susan grew up hearing jennifer crying out in pain from him beating on her and then seeing her the next morning with bruises covering her face and body. despite all the bruises and pain, jennifer always put a smile on and cared for susan.
things finally came to a stop when jennifer managed to get a restraining order from a (reluctant & critical) judge and granted sole custody of susan to jennifer. her father moved out in the summer of 1980 with susan and jennifer knowing nothing of his wherabouts to this day. susan and jennifer healed from that sad and difficult chapter and moved on to bigger and better things such as enjoying life in hawkins. susan and jennifer are pretty well known throughout town as the odd but perfect mother-daughter duo. susan's managed to get a job at starcourt in the gap. all she wants to do this summer is discover herself a little better and enjoy the warm weather and air conditioning from the mall.

adults: since her father's departure from her life, susan's step-mother, jennifer leary is her main guardian. the two are very close and susan adores her like her own mother. the pair are cute whenever around each other because they light up a room instantly. they usually can be seen walking around town grabbing a bite to eat at the local diner or as of late, shopping around the starcourt mall. jennifer may be on the younger side but she dotes on susan like any mother. susan confides in susan about most things and goes to her when she's not sure about herself. susan's always known that he was different than her classmates. when susan started high school, she came out to jennifer as a lesbian. obviously, jennifer supported her and has continued to support her in every capacity. jennifer has always embraced susan's energetic side and has made sure to keep her busy with after-school activities. jennifer and susan spend most days outside doing whatever if not working and the two spend the night watching old movies at night.
jennifer is often courted by the men in the town but as of late, jennifer's begun dating scott clarke, the sceince teacher at hawkins middle. she's happy to see her mother dating and enjoying someone else's company that isn't hers and that a man, unlike her father, is treating her with the respect she deserves. clarke and susan get along well and he's always happy to answer a science question for her. susan was one of his students and he likes seeing how she's still a spunky young girl. susan doesn't have any doubts about scott because she knows he's a good man who wouldn't hurt her mother like others or like her father.
another adult in susan's life is jim hopper. the police chief has helped susan stay and feel safe since the departure of her father. he's been a strong substitute father figure in susan's life. after her father left, hopper made it his mission to check up on susan and jennifer at least three times a month, making sure that they were safe and that no one was giving them trouble. while he's aloof with other aspects of his high position, hopper's dedication shows with susan and jennifer. hopper keeps a close eye on susan seeing as she's one of the few asian residents of the town. he's actually rattled a few kids before they had the gaul from making a rude comment at susan or jennifer.
younglings: susan's friend circle isn't big but it's enough for susan to survive in hawkins. one of those friends is nancy wheeler. they're not the best of friends but she's someone that susan can confide in when things are getting tough. nancy's more of an older sister figure to susan and she's snuck into her room through her window when she's broken down from nightmares of her father possibly coming back and hurting jennifer. nancy was also susan's first crush before steve started going out with her. susan swallowed her sadness and stuck by nancy through her relationship with steve. eventually, susan started getting over nancy as she saw how happy she became with jonathan who was a match for her.
the other two friends in susan's circle are a female applicant & male applicant. she got close to them within the past few years with the male applicant being a friend since she moved to hawkins. the female applicant is someone she didn't think she'd be friends with but when they connected on a common interest, their friendship blossomed. she usually hangs out with these two when not bothering nancy.

love story: susan and robin properly meet for the first time during the school year even though they've been in school together since the second grade. the two struck up a conversation in science class as they were paired for an experiment. by this point, susan knows she's gay and while robin was far from her type, it would be a lie to say that suzie didn't enjoy herself around robin. from then on, the two talked after class and began hanging out more outside of school.
it isn't until after school that the two experience awkward moments. they both work at the mall and so suzie will often stop by the scoops ahoy to get a cold snack. pretty soon, these visits started holding more weight for suzie. susan started realizing that her heart would beat a little faster whenever she saw robin and would spend time with her laughing and making fun of steve.
