"why can't i help?"
ace
I'm more than who I was created to be

i'm in charge of my own destiny

Ace deviates the latest of Duality and quietly sees in little ways how they change. He doesn't say a word, not when all he wants is for them to be happy. But he wonders: why? Being an idol - the persona they are given down to their very name - it's all in their coding. So why are they going against it? What could be better than fulfilling the purpose they were designed to do?

Then, one day, he walks into a training room and gives a piece of advice to a lone dancer. He doesn't think much of it until said trainee turns around, beaming at finally getting the move down. Then his coding lights with purpose and a happiness like when a fan recognizes him on the street. And he wonders. Maybe - just maybe - he too is like s and yearns for something else.

Before It All
Public Name: Ace (에이스)

Height: 185 cm
Faceclaim: Jung Daehyun (BAP)
Back Up: Kim Myungsoo / L (Infinite)

Styling Choices:
Dark colors to stand out against pale skin. Fine cuts to emphasize his body line. Covered details to keep fans wondering.

Personality:
The epitome of cool and mysterious - a "bad boy" who isn't really bad. Tends toward silence but when speaking, always tends towards the truth even if disrespectful or rude. Always looks good but hard to read. Has a habit of going and doing his own thing, following his own way through his life. Enigmatic but in an attractive way. Has a secret caring side. Essentially the perfect armcandy and eyecandy combined into one.

Programmed to have a soft spot for s and fans, indulging them in whatever antics they want. Earned him a bit of a big brother feel when with the other members of Duality and a boy next door touch when with fans. Treats people behind the scenes (aka not on streets) the same.

+ unflappable, reliable, dignified
= enigmatic, observant, forthright
- stoic, antisocial, impenetrable

insp: Sohma Yuki (Fruits Basket), Kuchiki Byakuya (Bleach), Sabaku no Gaara (Naruto)
aka: kuudere, aloof ally, misunderstood loner with a heart of gold

Individual Post-Debut Experiences:
Modeling (mostly magazines, billboards, or other still, silent shots)

Habits:
¤ Spaces out and stares intently (usually at a random pedestrian or fan) all the time (like doing nothing in his hologram-box).
¤ bottom lip when thinking about something - like what a fan asked / said.
¤ Walks like a model because programming.

If he were sent to a deserted island, what 3 things would he take?:
¤ A coffee pot filled with coffee to deal with whatever reason he was on the deserted island for.
¤ A book titled How to Survive a Deserted Island because you can bet your that he's getting off / surviving it successfully.
¤ A satellite phone to call for help and to let the rest of Duality know to not do anything stupid while he's gone (please).

What feature does he like most about himself?:
His hands - though fans don't usually notice - just because he thinks they look nice. Also, he has long, elegant fingers.

What feature does he dislike the most?:
His eyes because he notices people get nervous when he stares at them. (Ironically, his eyes are his fans' favorite feature.)

¤ Though possibly only due to programming, does have a real soft spot for his fellow members. Indulges them in skinship, random ideas, and just goes with their chaos flow.

¤ Has not yet been seen laughing. Some of his fans once started a contest to see who could get him to laugh. s joined. The contest is ongoing since no one won.
The Downfall
What triggered this change?:
Ace's change begins with an accidental meeting in Gongpil's room. A boy is dancing part of a Duality song, going over one difficult section over and over. The advice leaves his mouth before he even thinks about it, and the trainee nails the move. The boy turns around, stars in his eyes from the success, and thanks Ace.

It takes a few sentences for the boy to realize that he's talking to an actual member of Duality and get embarrassed for being so casual. Ace cuts off his flustered rambling and introduces himself, his cool tone helping calm the trainee who returns the introduction - Lee Hyunwoo, nephew of Lee Gongpil and two-month trainee.

Ace offers to teach Hyunwoo any time after a few more sentences of rambling - mostly genuine but also a little from wondering if the happiness like when Duality successfully performed could be achieved once more simply by helping someone else learn something. (As Ace finds out, it very much so does.)

How much does he trust his other group members?:
Before changing, Ace is programmed to have a soft spot for s, which is why he covers for some of their changes when Shiori asks. He definitely cares for them but it's hard to define it as trust since there isn't anything to trust them with. Ironically, s don't trust him since he's still android-y.

After his change, Ace likes to think of his programmed soft spot as a shortcut because he was going to care for them anyways. He slowly trusts them with little pieces - like knowing Ace is meeting up with a trainee - then with the larger pieces - like knowing Ace wishes he could do something that is not being an idol.

Personality:
Compared to the majority of Duality, Ace's changes are subtle. He's still stoic and calm and hard to read and all around the idol he was programmed to be. It's like the differences between an idol on stage and off stage. It feels like Ace is finally able to let go of a breath no one knew he was holding and simply be.

He turns out to have a hidden awkward side who struggles with words and most emotional things. He emotes more and is a lot easier to read - when he wants to be, that is. He avoids confrontation of any sort but also starts to hold his ground instead of just going with the flow. He learns his flaws and that he's still lovable.

+ unflappable, reliable, controlled
= observant, forthright, pacifistic
- stoic, awkward, obstinate

Habits:
¤ Tilts his head when confused.
¤ Messes with his bangs when embarrassed.
¤ Gives a lopsided smile - a real smile, not his perfect symmetrical one - when he's amused.

Likes:

Learning
Teaching

Dislikes:
Conflict
"Should"s
Discouragements

If he changed his name, what inspired the name?:
It's his first act of "rebellion," since as a coded idol he technically shouldn't need a name other than his stage name. It's actually dubbed by Hyunwoo who complains that Ace is always "too calm" ("너무 진정해"). As Jinjung is a real name, he adopts that as well as Hyunwoo (and Gongpil)'s last name - Lee - for Lee Jinjung. He still answers to Ace, however, and does not have a preference as to which name to use.

What steps does he take to achieve his new dream?:
At the encouragement of Hyunwoo and s (when he subtly lets it slip), he starts a YouTube channel that teaches people languages and accents. Because it doesn't make sense for a human to teach every language in the world, he teaches English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean in all sorts of permutations: Korean taught in English, Japanese taught in Chinese, Chinese taught in Japanese, English taught in Korean, etc.

He hides his face and uses his pseudoname (Lee Jinjung) so that he isn't recognized. Sometimes, the members of Duality will guest star as assistants and / or conversation partners, also hiding their face. Each video ranges from a quick two-minute vocabulary lesson to a full-hour topical lesson. The thankful comments literally make his day. (Duality also jokes Ace should think of things as lessons to teach to not be so awkward.)

When conflict comes, is he a fight or flight sort of person?:
Ace is much more of a flight person. He dislikes confrontation and conflict. However, if the subject matter means enough to him, he will be willing to fight for whatever / whoever it is.

What would you say is his greatest advantage in this situation?:
Ace is hard to read unless he chooses not to be so when he wants to keep a secret or cover something up, combined with his ever-constant cool, he's good at it - whether telling half-truths or full-out lies. Because he's so honest otherwise, people rarely doubt his word too.

What is his greatest weakness?:
Ace, being hard to read, also becomes a weakness because it's hard for him to gather allies or open up to people - even his other members - when they're giving him a confused look for just being there.

Any other information I should know?:
¤ Ace still loves Duality and his fans. He just wants to teach just as much as he wants to be an idol. If he could, he'd love to do both - as long as the other members of Duality were ok with continuing on the side. (He just doesn't want to rely on his Duality fame to be a teacher or for people to watch his teaching videos just because he's the one teaching.)

¤ The first person to ever get Ace to laugh is Hyunwoo when his rambling jumps to a worst-case scenario that's scientifically improbable. Hyunwoo snaps out of his own rambling to gape at Ace who stops laughing and raises a brow as if to ask, "What?" The first person to get Ace to laugh and on camera is when he's with s who are - mostly jokingly - figuring out who Ace loves best. Ace laughs and hugs the two nearest members, declaring he loves them all and that the only winner in the argument must be him, being so loved. Seeing Ace laugh so brightly, the members of Duality think that they're the real winners here.
If you could leave one statement to your name, what would it be?

"Be who you want to be, not who others want you to be or who you think you are, but the best you you can imagine; you'll find him / her faster than you think."
What about your situation scares you most?

"Purpose." As much as Ace wants to rebel, he also fears his divergence, wondering many things: why, when humans have developed the technology, they put their entertainment rather than their education first; how he came to not want to just fulfill his primary objective (The word "defective" comes to his mind and makes him flinch.); what it means not only for himself but for all of Duality as they change; etc. Most of all, he fears that this deviation in expected purpose and his desired purpose is going to hurt not only him but also all of Duality and even their loyal fans.
counterpart
Name: Lee Hyunwoo (이현우)
Faceclaim: debut Choi Junhong / Zelo (BAP)
Backup: Nam Dohyun (PX101)
Age: 16
Relation: Lee Gongpil's nephew
Personality:
The best way to describe Hyunwoo is close to a typical spoiled younger brother figure. He's childish and still growing with a heart of gold underneath his pouting tendencies. He's in the stage where he's shameless, but he's learning to be humble as he sees how little he actually knows. He's straightforward and honest and overall still seeking himself with a tendency to ramble when flustered. It's no wonder that he is seen as a spark of innocence - a child with the simple desire to be loved - in the eyes of Ace and most others.

+ hardworking, excitable, affectionate
= guileless, honest, talkative
- spacey, clumsy, awkward

insp: Midoriya Izuku (BNHA), Toogata Mirio (BNHA)

How did your character find a friend in this person?:
It was honestly on accident, but Ace helped Hyunwoo with a dance move. Ace offered to teach Hyunwoo any time and, after Hyunwoo takes up Ace's offers, any subject. Eventually, they began to hang out even outside of the teaching-learning setting as friends.

What made your character know he could rely on them?:
Ace knew he could look to Hyunwoo for inspiration and reminder when Hyunwoo continued to seek out Ace to learn things and to just hang out. Though Ace recognizes that he's made from programming, Hyunwoo's desire for his company shows him that he's real - real enough to want to befriend and follow.

What does your character rely on this person for?:
Ace relies on Hyunwoo as inspiration and reminder. When Ace is discouraged, he's encouraged by Hyunwoo's straightforward emotions and desires to follow after his dreams regardless of the difficulties. Also, whenever Ace teaches Hyunwoo something or Hyunwoo asks to learn something, Ace is reminded of what he can do - that he has knowledge and that he can pass it on. Although Hyunwoo calls Ace his role model, Ace also is guided forth by Hyunwoo.

What do you feel their relationship might be by the end of the story?:
Their relationship is at several in-between points. The two are still technically teacher-student with Ace teaching Hyunwoo, well, anything he wants to learn. However, the two definitely act brotherly in a role model sort of way. For example, the two once got mistaken for brothers after taking a picture together, so when Ace changes his hair color for a comeback, Hyunwoo asks to dye his hair the same color.

Is there anything your character worries about regarding this person?:
Ace worries that Hyunwoo will lose that straightforward, innocent spark. He knows change might happen simply by nature of growing up, but he hopes Hyunwoo won't let what the world tells him to do (aka be a rich doctor or lawyer) change what he wants to do (aka be an idol who makes others smile).
