On Writing Action-themed Stories

Noticing that there are many action-related stories here on this website, I started to investigate on how to write an action story.

However, what defines an action story? Basically, a lot of fighting, adrenaline, speed are filled into the sentences. Action dominates more of the story than comedy, angst or other genres, and though the ending may not have action, if the majority of the story consists of said subject, then it is an action-themed story.

But how can you write a story that attracts readers? Well then, there are many points to discuss.

Firstly: use different vocabulary. This is crucial in all stories, but particularly action stories. Should you use 'kick' or 'punch' in the same sentence, said sentence will become boring and the whole story will lose the aura of action. Opt for other verbs or nouns, such as 'uppercut', 'rabbit punch', 'swift blow', and then the scene will become much more realistic.

Secondly: the protagonists need to have some ups and downs. If the story has the same plot over and over again, it will also become dull. For instance, if the protagonist beats up everyone in every chapter, the readers will not have the heart to continue reading. Instead, if the protagonist is beaten up, and then said protagonist seeks revenge, the plot will become more exciting. Examples are The Empire Strikes Back and Infinity War. It's fun to watch the heroes heal from their wounds and win.

Thirdly: there must be a clear goal for the protagonists to achieve. If it is just "kill or be killed" then the protagonists will appear unintellectual. If the protagonist is striving to become a king, or if the protagonist is hunting for a treasure, the story will become clear asnd easy to understand. Otherwise, if it is just fighting and guns blaring, readers will not have an expectation of the ending, and they'd rather a story with a clear one.

Lastly, remember to do your research. If you have a clear knowledge of weapons, artillery, martial arts, or even places in which you can set your action scene, then it'd be like adding the finishing touch. Everyone could take a handgun and kill some random guy. But not everyone can experty wield a Rheinmetall MG 3 in an abandoned warehouse, blasting their way through a pack of drug dealers armed with Desert Eagle pistols.

And so this is my opinion on how to write an action story.
