Here are some key points to consider:

LYRICS

1. Hookline: does the song have a catchy hook? Is it easy to remember, eye catching, could people follow along with it after hearing it once? Does the song use a pattern such as ABAB, ABBA, AABB, etc?

2. Verses: Are the lyrics strong? Do they have a point? Do they invoke emotion? Do you feel the message they’re trying to give?

VOCALS

1. Is the vocalist a strong singer, or if it’s a rap song does the rapper have a good flow? What could be improved in their singing or rap style? Where are they strong? Where are they weak? Do they sing/rap with emotion or are they flat?

2. Relating to my last comment, and this is important. Does this singer or rapper make you FEEL something with their voice? A great artist can convey their feelings or the feelings that they are trying to portray through their song. They can make their audience feel what they want them to feel.

INSTRUMENTAL

1. What do you think of the different sections of the instrumental? Is the intro attention grabbing? Does it make you want to continue listening into the remainder of the song? What are your thoughts on the timbre?

COMPOSITION

1. Relating to the lyrics, what do you think of the notation used throughout the track? Is the key of the song appropriate for the feeling it’s trying to portray? Does it flow smoothly?

I normally look through the lyrics , watch their dance move , look at the theme and outfit , background , the voice of the singer , the props and etc..
