BACKGROUND born by the lapping shores in hangzhou, china, xin has always known the familiar grand canal waterway as part of her home. she was raised by her parents, and as an only child, she was raised as if she were the cub to two overprotective bears. xin had never had an opportunity to hang out with any of her friends when she was younger because it seemed "unsafe", and she barely even had friends in school. she became quite shy and reserved because her parents tried to shelter her from the world and would try not to let her out too much, so she's pretty much only ever interacted with her stuffed animals most of her life. while it was hard for her to forge a genuine relationship with her parents, she found that they always softened up over food. dinner would be her favorite time of the day, since it seemed to be the only time her parents would actually try and talk to her, and from then on, xin had always seen food as some sort of "healing" object. it made people happy when they were sad and brought others together, which became the foundation for her interest in food. also, at a very young age, she was introduced to anime and manga, as she was aimlessly searching through the internet for cartoons to watch, and that was the catalyst for her interest in other languages. for a period of time, she had tried to learn japanese because she was interested in the culture and the language, but it didn't work out so well because she never fully committed to it (but she was like 10, so you can't really expect her to be that self-disciplined). when she grew older, she was forced to take english in school, and it seemed like all of her previous interest in learning a new language had reappeared in her heart, and xin was reinvigorated. she did not quite want to study japanese again, since her heart didn't really lie there anymore, but at the time, she was gaining an interest in korean because of the simple complexity that the language held. she saw that it was a completely different species from her own language, yet it was something close to her home too, so after a lot of consideration, she decided to pursue it and a translation career. from then on, she decided to study korean and did a little bit of studying in china, but it seemed more idealistic for her to study in korea, where all of the opportunities were, so she took in a deep breath, hiked up her skirt, and attempted to convince her parents to let her study abroad. at first, both of her parents disagreed with the idea, but after some time, xin's mom relented, and with a bit more convincing, her father finally got on board with the plan too. xin, as a high school senior, then applied to a university in korea with a good translation and interpretation program, and got in, after a few months of anxious waiting. from then on, she packed her bags, and bid farewell to the reclusive life she had lived, and in her breath, while also hoping for a bright future where she was able to break out of her shell.

— with her being an only child, it would be a bit understandable for her parents to be very protective of her, but xin's father is the exact image you would get when you think of an overprotective dad. it may be because xin is his baby girl, but ever since she was young, it has been mainly him protecting her when he could. he was the one to disapprove of her dreams and of her desire to study abroad, in the instance that something were to happen to her, but as his baby girl, she somehow was able to convince him that she was fine being an independent girl. despite that, he was the one to perpetuate her shy personality ever since she was young, due to the fact that he never let her play with other kids and never really let her outside of the house either. in spite of that, xin does understand that her father cares about her... a bit too much for her liking though.

— lucas was previously xin's friend when she first came to korea, but after a few months of always hanging around her, he grew tired of her and eventually dumped her as a friend - which caused a lot of distress within xin. it was especially upsetting because she did not even know what she did wrong, he just told her that he didn't want to stay as friends and that she should just befriend other people. he never explained why he wanted to stop being her friend, but it made xin very self-conscious of herself, and she mulled over it for days. the friend "break up" was the very catalyst that started her foodstagram, but it didn't ease her heart. even now, she tends to wonder about him and why he stopped their friendship so abruptly. as for lucas, however, he wanted to stop being her friend because he was tired of having to cater to her. since she was so shy, he was the only one she ever talked to, and it became suffocating. he felt bad and hated that he hurt her feelings, but he also needed a break from her and knew that she wasn't going to step out of her shell any time soon, so the friend "break up" had to happen.

— seulhui was xin's first real friend after her friend "break up", and they met through the foodstagrams that each of them had. xin was amazed by seulhui because she was first very intrigued by the pink brows that seulhui had in one of her selfies, and admired how brave she seemed to be. xin didn't even have the courage to do anything drastic like that and it was even difficult for her to make friends but seulhui seemed to be perfect in the sense that she didn't quite care about what others thought of her. xin had always been fearful of what others had to say about her and was at the mercy of negative comments about her, so seeing someone so confident with a set of dramatically pink brows gave her some sort of awe. she lurked on the girl's page for a few days, wondering if it was weird for her to comment on her food pictures, but after a lot of fear and shyness, she managed to be able to leave an innocent comment on one of the pictures. she worried about how she sounded for a while because she didn't want to seem like a creep, but when seulhui gave an answer back and started interacting with xin, it slowly gave her the courage to relax.

— xin meets mark through seulhui and the other girls, but quickly finds out that he is friends with lucas, which causes her to be very wary of him. at first, she stays a distance away from him, if possible, since she didn't want to potentially involve herself with lucas again, but then again, she wanted to know why he stopped being her friend. she very desperately wanted to ask mark if he knew why, but couldn't bear to face the situation if he told lucas about her asking about him, so she mainly stayed away and kept the thought in her head as merely a thought and nothing more. despite that, she is very supportive of seulhui's crush on mark and encourages her to go for him, cheering her friend on. she doesn't quite affiliate herself with him, which makes mark think she hates him for a very long time, but in truth, she's just scared to face lucas.

THE CRISIS as she hails from a country that is close, yet entirely different from korea, xin's transition to the country has been a struggle for her, as she tries to adapt to the language and the culture. everything is strange to her and she finds herself missing home a lot, and her shy personality doesn't help her much either; the only thing that would comfort her would be the chinese meals she would seek out, as an attempt to feel comfortable in her new surroundings. very quickly, food became her solace and while she couldn't really talk to anyone nor make a lot of friends, xin felt at least comforted that food was there for her. in midst of her transitioning to her new life in korea, she befriended a very friendly boy named lucas wong. the pair quickly got along with one another, and since xin was an awkward person, he was the only one she felt comfortable being near. despite that, it seemed like he was becoming sick of her as the days went on because after a while, he told her that he was tired of being her friend, and it broke her heart. he was sadly her only friend, so this friend "break up" meant that it would be much lonelier for her now. in order to cope with her sadness, she soon started a foodstagram to keep in touch with her family and it was also a place for her to connect with a lot more people without the anxiety that real life brought for her. the friend "break up" with lucas caused her a lot of distress and she wasn't sure if anyone would like to be her friend anyway because she was probably too awkward and shy for others, but somehow, it just seemed easier for her to make friends online. previously, she had felt upset and alone, mainly because she didn't fit in, due to all of the differences between her and everyone else, but this foodstagram helped xin to build relationships with other foodstagrammers, thus giving her the courage to finally grow out of her shell - at least hopefully.

MEETING xin and yuta first met in their class, which was an introduction to translation and interpretation. she didn't know where to sit because she knew practically nobody there, and was too shy to ask anyone if she could sit next to them, but saw that there were a few seats left. most of her classmates looked like they came from america or some other english-speaking country because even on the first day, a lot of people were conversing with each other in english, while xin seemed to be the only chinese girl in the class. while it wasn't a large class, she was surprised to see that there were only a few asians in the room, but yuta most notably struck out to her because of his bright smile. he sat in the front of the room and had the most dazzling grin she had ever seen, but because of her shyness, she couldn't muster up the courage to ask him if she could sit next to him at all. it was hard for her to make friends anyway, at this point, her only friend was lucas, and she couldn't bear to embarrass herself with bad korean. what if the boy with the great teeth was amazing at korean? she'd just be a huge laughing stock at that point. she kept biting her lip and fiddling with her fingers anxiously while wondering where she should sit, until yuta turned back, feeling like someone was staring at him, and saw xin looking nervously for a seat. being his normally outgoing self, he merely called her over and told her to sit next to him, and while xin barely understood him, due to her nervousness and low-level fluency in korean, she could see that he was trying to get her to sit next to him, so she breathed in relief and placed her things in the seat next to him. she barely uttered a word to him because she was that nervous, but just hearing him talk incessantly about nothing made her smile every time.
